Those stills look interesting, I'm glad it won't have any overt Twilight stuff in it either.

Those acoustic tracks are great, especially Cosmic Love. Cosmic Love tends to be a song she always hits out of the park though. I wish she would do an acoustic version of Howl too, I think that'd be really interesting.

You know who I think Florence should write/co-write some songs for? Christina Aguilera. I'm not even kidding. Christina snarling her way through something like "Howl" would be EPICALLY good.

With the aim of subscribing to this thread I shall now dazzle you all with some slightly out of focus shots of Flo from Primavera Sound in Barcelona, where I saw her live a couple of weeks ago. She was great, of course, but you can only play the same songs to the same crowd a certain number of times, so hope she gets working on the new album soon...

Well, she's writing and recording it off and on all this year, apparently they've made some headway already...certainly not going to be out this year, she says, but 2011 almost definitely. That sounds right to me...I can't imagine that they'd wait until 2012 to release a new record, though long breaks are happening more and more often between first and second albums for some of these talented, breakout acts....

Just a few things:

- someone posted a link (http://forum.florenceandthemachine.net/t/1700.aspx) to an audio rip of Flo's full Glastonbury set on the official forum

- there are larger (if you click them, of course) versions of the photos from the video shoot of 'Heavy in Your Arms' (http://tombeardphotos.blogspot.com/2010/06/tabs-and-i-shot-new-videoviral-for.html)

- And
Amazing news everybody, Florence has today been confirmed for a headline slot at this year's iTunes Festival!

She will play the month long event at the Roundhouse in London on July 13 with support coming from Lauren Pritchard.

The show will be a super intimate, acoustic affair in front of just 200 people - this is one extra special Florence gig you don't want to miss!

All tickets will be available exclusively to competition winners. To enter head to the iTunes Festival website (http://www.itunesfestival.co.uk/) right now.

The shows will also be recorded and made available as albums on iTunes.

Now, I'm a huuuuuge Fan of Florence, but her show at T in the Park in Glasgow last weekend was dreadful (they showed it on BBC). Lately she just seems to shout (off-key) instead of singing. This time last year her live shows were amazing, she hardly missed a note.

While I agree that Florence's cover of Halo is pretty bad, it's redeemed at least somewhat by that 10 second awaaaaaaaaaay from 3:05-3:15. Florence can be a bit shout-y live, but in general I think she's a great live performer. Just check out some of the acoustic stuff posted earlier in the thread.

Anyone catch Florence's performance (I didn't see the Machine or her backing band) of "Dog Days Are Over" last night on the VMAs? Easily the best performance all night, and it's really seemed to have made people pay attention - Currently Lungs is the #2 album on iTunes; DDAO the #7 song. The video for "Dog Days Are Over" also picked up an award for Best Art Direction.

I'd say she's well on her way to stardom here.

I know she's hoping to put out another album next year, but I'm wondering if all this new attention will justify another tour early in 2011. I'd love to get the chance to see them live someday, but the US tours haven't been extensive at all. It's just surprising to me that Dog Days Are Over is the song that's breaking her in the US. I'm trying to imagine how people's minds will be blown when they hear things like Rabbit Heart, Drumming Song, Howl, Blinding, Hurricane Drunk, etc. i.e. almost anything else from the album.

It may not have been her best performance ever, but she schooled almost every single other artist there. LOVED it. And of course, the red hair all spread out around her reminded me of Under the Pink album art.

I can't wait til people catch on to Drumming Song, I can see that getting remixed for the clubs. I just quoted it in my facebook status once and a ton of people who I'm sure never heard of her liked it.

Some details about a new song in Florence's interview with NY Post PopWatch (http://www.nypost.com/p/blogs/popwrap/new_florence_the_machine_music_sQujIg2y7YzYVadkX5BZzH):

PW: Given your need for a studio, have you written any new material for the next album?

Florence: Yes, I’ve written two new songs – one is called "Strangeness & Charm," which we've been playing live a lot. Hopefully we’ll be playing one more new one. One song is about being scared of going mad – hearing voices in your head while you’re trying to fall asleep. I get auditory hallucinations when I’m falling asleep. Auditory dreams – something loud, like a word, will be said really loud in my head and wake me up. There was a song about that and it’s really aggressive. Loads of clattery drums and the choir takes it to the next level. I played it for my boyfriend and he said, “still not gagging for that number one, are you?” [laughs] “Still not rushing towards commercially viable music with epic one-minute drum breaks and crazy, backwards whispering, huh?"

There'll also be a performance of the Sirius/XM channel The Spectrum today at 4. Here's a video of Dog Days Are Over (acoustic) from that set:

F+TM will be on Saturday Night Live this weekend, too. Undoubtedly doing Dog Days Are Over, and hopefully also a much better song. Like Howl. Or Drumming Song. Or Rabbit Heart. i love "Dog Days Are Over". vocally, musically, it evokes strong feelings of triumph for me. of all the songs to catch on big here, i'm actually kinda glad this is the one. i'm afraid some of the darker songs may appeal to the Paramore crowd, so i'm not too upset about the darker tunes being our little secret. i do think "Rabbit Heart" or "Drumming Song" have strong hit potential though.

i've had a few glorious experiences lately at the bar, when it's close to the end of the night and someone queues "DDAO" on the jukebox. when you look around and all of your friends are (poorly) singing such a beautiful, uplifting song... it's kind of amazing. :D

Florence was very cute and funny on Chelsea Lately, and she looked great too. My one complaint was that there were no questions about any new material/the next album, but I wasn't expecting too much of that anyways, since there's still going to be a focus on making Lungs a big hit in the US for at least a few more months.

Do we know what the next single will be in the US? That'll probably be the 2nd SNL song this weekend.

There's also a new live EP of the performance at the SoHo iTunes store which was just released this week. It includes live performances of Cosmic Love, Drumming Song, Girl With One Eye, Between Two Lungs, Hurricane Drunk, and Dog Days.

i hope they go with either Cosmic Love or Drumming for both the single and the song on SNL. she'd bring the house down with either of them. if she does well on SNL it could give her another really big push, especially with people who like Dog Days but haven't investigated her further yet.

And given the way SNL has been these past few seasons, you won't want to watch the whole thing :( Although Anne Hathaway is the host. Yay!

Re: Dogs Days Are Over ... I can see why it's the breakout song. I think it's the best song on the record. It builds to beautifully.

11-18-2010, 04:33 PM
I'm not even sure if there will be a second single, or at least that it's not on the radar right now - DDAO is miraculously still climbing both the Alternative and Rock charts on Billboard. It hasn't peaked yet, so I can't see them rushing to get something else out there.

But the funny thing is that iTunes used to have EP's for Drumming Song and Rabbit Heart, but they removed them for whatever reason some months back when DDAO started getting proper attention. So I guess if I had to guess I'd say it'll either be one of those... or they could just go with something completely different too which wouldn't surprise me.

I'm pretty sure Heavy in Your Arms will be the other song on SNL this weekend though.

This season has been better than last season, but it's still so hit and miss.

This weekend's episode was strong, though ... Anne Hathaway did a terrific job. I hate to be negative, but Florence did not sound good on SNL at all. I love her recorded voice, but her voice on SNL sounded so strained and all-over-the-place to me. If I didn't know the recorded versions of those songs, I would never check her out based on those performances.

MikeEP

She looked and sounded nervous but I didn't think it was that bad overall. I wish she'd done anything but You've Got the Love as the 2nd song though. I just don't think it's a good representation of all of the amazing (original!) material on Lungs.

Just recently checked her out and while I enjoy her recorded stuff ( a bit...I find her stuff a bit repetitive and boring), she has sounded horrible live. That SNL performance was a mess, imo. I wish she would quit trying to do SO much with her vocals. It's just a distraction from the songs and while I think she's a good vocalist, she doesn't seem to be one who can pull off Christina style acrobatics.

halo eighteen
11-22-2010, 04:33 PM
My major complaint was the mixing - her voice was all too buried beneath everything except when she was belting things out. I think she was definitely nervous, too. I don't think it was a horrible performance at all, but I was really hoping for a better second song, too. On the bright side, at least she didn't do "Kiss with a Fist" though.

Agreed. I saw her live in NYC earlier this year, and she was OK ... but she oversings like crazy and is going to blow her voice out if she keeps it up. As someone who generally likes her and thinks she has promise, I'm kind of startled at how terrible her recent televised performances have been. And apparently she was quite bad at the Glastonbury festival as well, with reports saying she was dreadfully out-of-tune.

You can blame acoustics, song selection, whatever ... but the common demoninator is Florence herself being consistently out-of-tune.

The show i saw in Boston in April she was definitely singing her ass off but there was more control to it from what I remember. She wasn't shouting the way I've seen in some performances. Listen to the live videos from KEXP in the first post of this thread, she can definitely sing well live.

I JUST got into Florence and I'm absolutely in love. Every time I listen to Lungs I develop a new favorite song. Right now my top 3 are The Dog Days are Over, Rabbit Heart and Howl. She's like Lady Gaga, Lorena Mckennitt and Tori Amos all wrapped up into one.

I am fairly new to Florence. She was on my list of artists to listen to before Dog Days hit it big and I saw a thread on the @ a while back.
I have heard that there is a 2008 and 2010 version of Dog Days. Can someone tell me what the main differences were? Is it the actual song that is different or just the video? I know there was a different video originally but any video I find online of it doesn't work and has been removed.

I think it's just the video that is different.

New Florence fan here. So I got Lungs for Christmas (yay!), and one of those sticker things they put on the cover with album reviews said she sounds like Kate Bush. WHUT. Seriously? Do they have to compare every female artist to Kate Bush? I'm sicksicksick of it. It's getting so old. Florence (to me) sounds nothing like Kate, and I love her for that. I guess the percussion on Lungs is similar to Hounds Of Love's percussion, but, yeah. Not hearing all the purported "similarities" these music critics seem to hear.

Anybody buy the b-sides album yet? I just got it yesterday. It's pretty cute, but definitely b-sides. There are a couple really good ones, but I can see why they aren't on the original album.

I really like the song "Falling". And "Bird Song" is pretty awesome.

Wow, they've really got Florence playing some huge venues this time around, not even considering the shows where she's opening for U2. I'll be at the Philly show, and that's at a 5,000 person outdoor venue, And the Boston show is over 5,000 as well. Makes me extremely glad I was into Florence in 09, and managed to see her at a tiny venue like Bowery Ballroom.

Florence is the new face of Gucci!

She's the new face of Gucci and inspired a whole Mulberry show: Why the fashion world has Got The Love for Florence Welch
We reveal how to get the distinctive look that has the style set head over heels...

While many stars have their pick of designer labels, few manage to make each look quite as individual as singer Florence Welch.

And it is for this reason that the singer has become a favourite with designers, who not only want to dress her, but cite her as their inspiration.

Today Gucci announced that Miss Welch was the new face of the brand. But it seems its love affair with the 24-year-old has been evolving for a while.

In an interview with Dazed Digital, the label's creative director, Frida Giannini, said: 'As I was imagining this collection I was thinking of a strong and somewhat mysterious muse. Florence is that kind of woman.

'I met her in Los Angeles at this year's Grammys and was captivated by her presence. She has a powerful personality and an entrancing quality to her performances.

'She also has that confident and self assured look that goes hand in hand with the Gucci woman.'

But Ms Giannini is not the only one to spot the star's style potential. Last year Miss Welch was guest of honour at a Mulberry catwalk presentation that saw every single one of the models styled with her signature red hair and heavy fringe.

The appreciation is mutual too - in recent months she has been seen carrying the label's popular Alexa and Tillie bags.

And if the fashion world is your oyster, as it is for the former art student, who wouldn't be taking their pick from the runways of Chanel and Valentino. The fashion powerhouses do not allow just anyone to borrow their clothes.

She wore vintage Valentino to the Oscars this year, and a gown from the label's couture collection for Elton John's annual Academy Awards after party, and Chanel to a recent party celebrating Blake Lively's appointment as the face of the label's Mademoiselle handbag line.

But it is possible to get the star's look without a designer budget, and while it seems she functions beyond the fashion rulebook, there are some style hallmarks we can all learn from.

So the new tour starts in less than a week, and I'll be seeing the Philly show! Do we think Florence will be debuting any new material live? Since she supposedly has some of the 2nd album written, it would make sense to throw a few of those songs into the set, and it would give the audience something new and exciting. I love Lungs but I've seen almost all of that album live before, so I'm hoping there's more new stuff than just Heavy in Your Arms/Strangeness and Charm.

That said, Florence is such a great live performer that she could play the exact same setlist she did when I saw her in 2009 and I'm sure I'd love it.

Well, they're supposed to have already done at least one two-week studio stint with Paul Epworth for Album 2, and there may have been more. I'm betting they'll trot out one or two new things, at least. I REALLY want a new album before 2011 is over, but that's looking less likely with each passing month and a lack of updates.

I saw her on Saturday in chicago. She was amazing- beautiful and her voice was just indescribable. The venue didn't have the best acoustics, and they must have oversold the show because there was no room anywhere. So jam packed. I was there as well, and I am still reeling from how great it was. It was in the top 3, at least, of the best shows vocally I've ever seen. Agreed, despite being a gorgeous venue, the Aragon has awful, gymnasium style acoustics. In some cases the reverb worked with the song, in others it sounded like she was singing from a cave. Highlights for me were Howl, Drumming Song, Hurricane Drunk, Cosmic Love, Rabbit Heart, and even Dog Days sounded fresh. Really, everything. The set reminded me just how brilliant Lungs is; truly one of the best albums of the last 10 years.

Also, all the new songs she played sounded great! Kind of darker, so I'm anxious to hear how they translate in the studio. It's hard to believe she's 25, but exciting because that means we have many more years of music from her, hopefully.

I'm glad to hear that her voice is holding up well. There was a period of time where I was worried she was straining too much and didn't really know how to work with and preserve her voice the way that, for example, Gaga does, but it sounds like things are fine! I'm seeing her on the 30th here in Orlando and I can't WAIT.

See, I skipped going to any shows because I hated her vocals on any live recordings I heard. The arrangement is fine, but that Radio One cover of Halo is one of the worst publicly executed vocal performances I've ever heard formally released. Yeah that Halo performance sounds so strained. With Florence's voice, it's all about production or acoustics. It's just so big and with the wrong setup, it'll just sound like she's screaming. THis is just for the powerful songs, though. I think her softer vocals sound great in any setting.

Really? What happened? I saw her last night and thought the show was amazing. Vocally, she was so powerful, and her stage presence has really grown since I saw her in 2009. Surprise highlights for me were Between Two Lungs and Drumming, which aren't my favorites on the album, but were excellent last night. The only disappointing aspects of the show were that Cosmic Love was not as incredible live as it is on the album and that Heavy In Your Arms wasn't played.

The two new songs she played were good although nothing extremely noteworthy. There definitely is a darker tone to them than most of Lungs, but they still fit in well overall. I'm confident the next album will offer at least a refinement and darkening of the Lungs sound, if not something totally different.

I must have seen the dud show of the tour, but I refuse to go see her again until the next album comes out.

When she started, I thought she had lost her voice or something. She couldn't hit any of the high notes, she chose to do all the lower harmonies of her songs, and she just had no concept of how to play to a big amphitheater venue like the Greek. She did say it was the largest audience in the US they've ever played for, so maybe it was nerves?

Alright, so my main gripes with the show:

1) Her voice. Just... shot. She would sing, then tear the mic away from her voice, so the end of every line was truncated and a total fall off in energy. Clearly she needed to be instructed how amphitheater acoustics work versus those in a club, etc. Also, she just... didn't seem to care. She couldn't be bothered to pump out Cosmic Love with any intensity, Heavy in Your Arms was barely understandable, Rabbit Heart was neutered. The only song that felt like it hit with the same intensity was Drumming Song.

2) Her stage is very... amateur. The lighting cues were all off and the lighting in general was uninspired, lazy and at times utterly regrettable. The backdrops were malfunctioning, so the "starry night" function during Cosmic Love was totally lost. It's clear she's touring with a rig outfitted for her earlier shows when they didn't have much of a budget. But if she's going to tour and expect people to pay $40 for a ticket, after all the fame she's garnered, it's a bit of an insult to tour with shoddy equipment and with amateur designers.

3) Whereas the other 2 times I've seen her the arrangements felt full, almost to the point of bursting, at the Greek the band sounded threadbare and thin. The only great player was the drummer (how often is that ever said?! lol). They could have done with a second keyboards and a second guitar, because the arrangements felt clunky, but weighed down by lack of purpose, which felt like a direct correlation to being undermanned. The thing is... Florence doesn't have back-up singers. So, they lose that fullness from the record with her voice-- the cascading harmonies clashing and working together to make this monstrous, huge, enormous beautiful wall of sound. So, at least make the music full and gorgeous. The harp was cool, but you couldn't hear it. And the one keyboard player was just plunking out block chords, like Chris Martin of Coldplay joined Florence's band.

Anyway, yeah. I must have seen an off show, because the reviews from this tour have been stellar. And I've seen her twice before this, both of which I've been blown away. I had high hopes for this show, and was really, truly disappointed.

I thought her Philly performance was great and she did well on colbert last night too compared to other tv performances i have seen. her vocals were incredible and i felt stronger live than on the album. the crowd/venue i don't think was really the best for her. the majority of the crowd on the outskirts of the venue where I was, was there to party/get drunk and hear "dog days". they were constantly talking loudly during the quieter moments of her performance which was highly distracting for me (I am so intolerant in my old age). ;)

sorry you didn't get a good night on the tour.

Peter Z, i gotta say i found the tone of your review to be really arrogant. you're certainly entitled to your opinion, but these comments in particular come off as totally condescending and presumptuous:

I can see how you could read it that way, but that was neither the intention nor the foundation of my comments. I have done my fair share of Florence gushing (though, admittedly, mostly on @forumz), and I am the first to champion her strengths and successes. And I don't feel the need to defend my review in any way, except for the fact that you're making a value judgment of my character based on the words I wrote. Hank (JHV) asked me the reasons why I felt so frustrated by the show I saw, because he also knows that I'm a big F+TM fan, and I offered my opinion.

It was evident to me that there were major growing pains. Florence has been all over the world now, and I'm afraid she's being pushed to the brink to propel Lungs further, but the technical aspects of the show haven't progressed enough to match her success. Being a music critic professionally, the interstitial aspects of a show really matter to me-- I try to look at the experience holistically, so the sound, the lights, the stage setup all matter to me.

And the drummer comment was a joke. About drummers. To lighten the mood a bit!

I would have loved nothing more than to report back that the show exceeded my expectations. It, unfortunately, did not. I think I gave a fair and balanced assessment of my criticisms with the show, with plenty of space to point out how to strengthen the show next time she does an outing playing such big venues. If you think that came across as arrogant, I'm sorry you feel that way. I'd just ask you to assess my response based on the context of my fandom in this thread. :)

she has been on the road for an extremely long time, i saw her live now more than 1 1/2 years ago, i cannot believe she is still promoting lungs. but in that 1 1/2 years she has gone from playing very small stages (like the one i saw her on), to much bigger venues. she seems to have a voice that can be very hit-or-miss; at the time i saw her i was surprised that she was holding up so well, her voice even seemed more powerful live than on the album. however, the (admittedly very few) videos i have seen of her live performances did not impress me that much.

to me, it really had nothing to do with whether or not you liked the show or how big a fan or professional a music critic you are, it was you making self-important declarations like how she "has no concept of how to perform in an amphitheater" and needs to be "instructed" -- just seems very condescending, as if you're some sort of expert in live performance and poor little Florence just doesn't get it. to each his own though.

Peter Z

I do stand by the assertion that Florence could use some guidance, both technically and artistically, for playing such a large stage. When she last came to the Bay Area, she played the Fox Theater, and it was immediately apparent how comfortable she was in a club/theater setting. She totally owned the room and had the crowd surging with energy. But at the Greek, which is a much bigger (both in capacity and grandeur) space, Florence seemed a bit lost at how to approach the audience and seemed like a fish out of water.

But what a great opportunity for growth. I in no way expect her, in her mid-twenties, to be able to excel at every single thing she tries-- that's part of evolving as an artist. I mean, so many of my favorites had a rocky start to their performance life, but that doesn't mean they're inherently bad or unworthy of success. It's a process, and I think most in this thread would acknowledge that Florence has a true spark and intensity, that sometimes can misstep. I feel you're projecting a condescension that isn't that. Frankly, I'm excited for her next tour, because she's working out the kinks. And this has been a LONG tour, so she's got to be ready for the next phase.

Still, doesn't change that I think she could benefit from some guidance and advice from those in the business. No one is above maximizing their potential.

Went to the show last night, after many many trials and tribulations. The girl who invited me asked me to go to Providence with her yesterday (about an hour trip from our homebase, and where the radio station that gave the tix was located), so that she wouldn't have to ride in a limo with the radio people alone. Long story short, she got belligerently drunk, the most embarrassing 40-minute-drive of my life followed, and I had to put her in a cab home the minute we pulled up to the venue. By this point I was so upset that I asked the station to take the tickets back, but they refused and the record label contact with Florence insisted that I was now the "contest winner" and had to go with her to the M&G.

Pulled myself together, decided to just try and enjoy the evening's events; met Florence and her friend (who I think plays keyboards in the band?). Ms Gurl is SO EFFING tall and thin - I'm already a bit of a stick-bug myself, but she just towered over me like a fragile flower. She's just so gorgeous and gracious in person, though I could tell that she is probably also flat out exhausted from touring this long. Both Florence and her friend gushed over my hair and asked to touch it, Florence signed a cd for me and took a photo, and off she fluttered.

After hearing about her hit-or-miss live vocals, I was a bit nervous about the show - but there was no need last night! She was on fire! She's got a very Stevie Nicks-esque persona on stage, and her voice was so much more incredible than on the album. She was clearly wearing down during the encore (she sang Rabbit Heart in a much lower-register), but she was just spine-shiveringly powerful for 95% of the show. Highlights were probably Blinding (with a Gaga "Judas" intro), Drumming Song, Between Two Lungs (never a favorite of mine, actually), and Howl. Oh, and the new material. She definitely referred to two songs as "new" but there was a third song that I didn't recognize - could have been a cover, but was possibly new? The crowd adored her, she was very high energy and joked a lot with us about having the biggest lobster ever in town (there was some kind of dick joke thrown in there too, but it was tough at times to decipher everything through her accent, which was thicker than I expected). All in all, a really phenomenal show even if the afternoon/evening got off to a rocky start.

I wish she had taken it a bit further or performed "Judas" in its entirety, because it was so profoundly eerie and beautiful with her voice.

I can sympathise with Peter; I saw Florence three times last year. One show was absolutely incredible, one was good and the last one was unbelievably bad. It was at a festival in Spain and her voice was dreadful. She later said she'd been drinking because she was nervous, and that was why. Perhaps something similar happened at your show?

So, just out of curiosity: how many openers (if any) are there? My tix for tonight say 8:00, but if that's just the showtime for the opener, and if there's more than one, I probably won't bother getting there right at 8:00.

When I saw her last week, there was one opener (Twin Shadow) - they came on around 8:00. Florence was supposed to be on at 8:45 but I think she came on closer to 9:10 or 9:15.

Between Two Lungs really does seem to be the showstopper in live shows (it was for me too), which is funny because I think it's one of the weaker tracks on the album. I mean, it's certainly not BAD, but it lives in the shadow of a lot of the other songs for me. And then I saw her live and it was the best song.

I saw her this past week in st louis and was stunned. there were a few songs in the beginning (Between Two Lungs was one, the other was,of all things, MyBoy Builds Coffins) during which I had full-on goosebumps and got tears in my eyes because her vocal delivery was so strong. The whole time I had the impression that she could knock herself over with that voice. I'm so glad I went. I don't think her studio production comes close to doing justice to her voice.

She played two new songs. one was What the Water Gave Me(?), and I found myself totally enraptured by it. That's really unusual for something i've never heard before.

She had a bit of Stevie Nicks and Kate Bush channeling through her, and yet she still
managed to rock her own thing.

My one criticism is an issue with the songwriting. Several of the songs come to a very abrupt end. I think she and the band could work on making things more interesting with a few good codas.

I assume there's no way the record will come out in September. They're likely going to be doing a HUGE amount of press for this, especially in the US. So, they need to give time in advance of that, I'd think close to 2 months. Maybe early November?

I'll be really surprised if it makes it out before the end of the year, but it would be wise to capitalize on holiday shopping. Lungs is still routinely making it into the top 50 and getting closer to the million mark every week, so who knows what this one could be capable of doing...

short interview with Pitchfork:

http://cdn.pitchfork.com/media/flo452zz.jpg

This November, Florence and the Machine will release the follow-up to their hugely popular (and huge-sounding) debut LP, Lungs. The as-yet-untitled album is out November 7 in the UK via Island, and Universal Republic will release it sometime the same month in the U.S. Listen to the first track released from it-- the festival-ready, gospel-choir-infused "What the Water Gave Me"-- below.

While Lungs featured the input of several different producers and showed off various sonic styles, the new album has the band working solely with studio man Paul Epworth (Adele, Bloc Party), whose work was featured on many of Lungs' best tracks including "Cosmic Love" and "Blinding". Frontwoman Florence Welch promises a more cohesive affair that zeroes-in on the booming mystic-pop that highlighted her debut. Along with "What the Water Gave Me", the new record features live favorite "Strangeness and Charm" (listen to a high-quality live rip of that track here.)

We spoke with Welch last week as she was putting the final touches on the new record, "fiddling with the tiniest bits that only I would probably notice," she said. Read on for our brief interview:

Pitchfork: I thought the best tracks on Lungs were produced by Paul Epworth-- did you feel the same way? Is that why you got him to produce this whole album?

Florence Welch: Yeah, the way that "Cosmic Love" turned out really made me want to do the whole next record with him. That song was written in like half an hour in a tiny bedroom studio and I always had this idea for a really big sound coming from all that clatter, and he managed to capture that on record in the best way.

With Lungs, I hit on the sound I wanted about halfway through making it. There were so many different influences, and the differences between a song like "Kiss With a Fist" and "Dog Days" are huge because I'd written one when I was 17 and one when I was 21. With this record, I've been able to expand on the idea that I was hitting on towards the end of making Lungs. It's like taking everything from the first album that seemed quite separate and making them whole.

Pitchfork: I caught your set at a few festivals over the last couple years, and your music really thrived in that open atmosphere. Do you feel like playing to such big audiences influenced the sound of this new album?

FW: Yeah. I've been thinking about songwriting more in terms of playing it live, and how it will sound as a band. With the first one, I wasn't really thinking about that, so some of the songs were pretty unrecognizable live compared to how they are on record, which isn't a bad thing, either. I don't want to go to a gig and it sounds record-perfect.

Pitchfork: Are there any other songs that you're particularly excited about on the new album at this moment?

FW: I don't want to give too much away yet, but I'm happy with it. It's quite hard for me to say that about something because, as a British person, I'm so self-critical. [laughs] I'm never satisfied with anything.

Pitchfork: It's funny to hear you hemming and hawing because you seem so uninhibited onstage. Do you get nervous before shows?

FW: The stage is the place I feel comfortable-- it's almost as if real life is where I feel most nervous. Conversations are a lot more nerve-wracking. All the words are already there when you're singing onstage, it's fantastic. You can lose yourself in what you've created. You're controlling this freedom. Whereas in a conversation, the words can get stuck, I don't know what to say, I get very anxious.

Pitchfork: So you're more nervous about this conversation than playing Glastonbury?

FW: Yeah! [laughs] Actually, the last Glastonbury was terrifying. There were just so many people-- you can't quantify that many people in your eyeballs. It was such an intense experience. That Glastonbury was definitely more frightening than this conversation.

Pitchfork: You've done a bunch of collaborations over the last few years with the likes of Dizzee Rascal and the xx. Are there any guests on this new record?

FW: It turned out that I haven't really worked with anyone else on it. In the future, I'd really like to do something with Jamie from the xx. We've done a couple bits here and there together, so maybe that will turn into something.

Here are a few extra details from Alan Cross (http://www.alancross.ca/a-journal-of-musical-things/2011/9/12/florence-and-the-machines-ceremonials-an-exercise-in-big-sou.html):

Florence Welch is on the phone and she sounds far more self-assured than the woman I first talked to almost three years ago. The relentless touring behind her debut album, Lungs, hasn't seem to hurt her a bit.

Florence and the Machine's second album--due October 31 in the UK and Europe and November 1 in North America--will be called Ceremonials.

"Years and years ago, I saw an art exhibition and there was this video art piece called 'Ceremonials.' It was done in the 70s and was done in Super-8 and it's kind of Coquette-sy--there's that documentary called Coquette about this 70s theatre troup that lives in San Francisco and I came kind of obsessed with it.

"This video piece is all about these processions and it's kind of colour based and everyone's wearing masks and there's all kinds of different colours...coloured balloons...and strange ceremonies going on.

"That word--ceremonies--got stuck in my head. And then went it came to this album which was influenced by hymns and poems and sounds of church bells. There's kind a lot of ceremonial influences and aspects to it, so it seemed to fit."

I've heard a little more than half the record and it is big, soulful and powerful. Think Adele or Tori Amos but with some serious Kate Bush DNA, especially with the rhythm section.

Difficult second album? Doesn't sound like it to me...

Also, it looks like "Shake It Out" will debut tomorrow on Xfm:

Florence Welch chats about Florence And The Machine's new album Ceremonials on Wednesday September 14, as Xfm gives the new single Shake It Out its first spin.

You can listen to Music:Response Monday to Thursday 8pm to 10pm (BST) on Xfm 104.9 in London, 97.7 in Manchester, on digital radio across the UK, on your mobile and online at www.xfm.co.uk

So curious to hear the sound of this first single! Hoping it's not a Dog Days re-hash, but I suppose it has to have some kind of uptempo quality to it in order to sell the album. I'm loving Shake It Off on first listens and prefer it to What the Water Gave Me. The chorus definitely has an anthemic quality, which is especially evident in the ways the backing vocals come in. The lyrics are far too cliche, but the vocals are strong enough that they can sell the spottier moments, and the song is overall quite powerful. I can't wait until we start getting some live performances of it, I'm sure it'll be amazing.

Agreed, and WTWGM is way more Florence than this, and I'm sure the label pushed for a single like this over something darker. I love it, and it will really come to life in a performance setting.

Forumulaic is the perfect descriptor for this song.

I don't know if I could listen to Shake it Out too much. Her voice is really screamy and irritating. Hoping it's just the compression on that particular file. I've read people make comments like that about F+tM's music before, but I never heard it until now. :(

Coldplay was the first thing I thought when I heard this too. And I'm not really comfortable with that.

i know what you mean, but i really think Coldplay's audience is the same demographic that Florence appeals to (and is definitely courting) within the mainstream, particularly in the US. it reminds me of "You've Got the Love" in that sure, it's a solid radio single but i doubt it'll be one of my favorites on the album.

Totally, if these two new songs are the type of caliber we can expect for the rest of the album, we are in for a hell of a record. To think she's regulated Strangeness and Charm and Bedroom Hymns to "bonus track" status is mindblowing, actually. I loved those two live!

Shake it out is pretty bad, IMHO :( But I'm still hoping for a good album. I do like her first single.

Wow, surprised people aren't enjoying this one - I can't stop listening. I don't have a preference between this and What The Water Gave Me, but I do see them as the foundation of a damn good album. And that's from someone who had very low expectations she'd be able to recapture the brilliance of Lungs.

It reminded me of You've Got the Love as well. I like What the Water gave me much more than Shake it Off.

That single cover reminds me of Tori Amos. Not because it slightly resembles the Abnormally Attracted to Sin artwork, but because her face looks slightly plastic and a bit deformed. Eh, it's petty. I think "Shake it Off" is decent, but I don't really connect with it.

i really like both new songs. i kind of share the criticism that they are "stadion-rock" and rather formulaic, but it doesn't matter, i still like them. :) 'what the water gave me' is great to sing along with, it is my new favourite song to play when i am cleaning or cooking (i always need sing-along music when i am doing house-work). it makes me excited for the new album. i was afraid that it would be a disappointment, since i couldn't imagine flo would have had a lot of time working on it with all the touring she does, but if all songs are like this, it will be a worthy successor to 'lungs'.

You can hear the Weeknd remix of Shake It Out here (http://disconaivete.com/post/10733719731). I don't like it as much as the original, but it's interesting to hear a darker and moodier take on the song. I could do without some of the distorted voices though.

Billboard Magazine (out Friday)

Today she performed at the Luvluvluv's secret party and brought out 4 new songs. Here's clips of 2 of them.

Maybe it's just the quality of these clips coloring my perception, but I'm not enjoying the new material much yet. The songs all sound a bit same-y, and not one seems to be moving in a new direction. I do like What the Water Gave Me, but maybe Flo will end up being one of those artists who progress horizontally, rather than forward, through their body of work.

Hard to tell much from the clips, but it does indeed seem generally promising!

I just tried to listen to Shake It Off again, and kept finding myself looking at the time to see if it was going to be over soon. :\ I've never felt like this about a Florence song before. But I really adore What the Water Gave Me (more than most of Lungs, in fact!), so I remain optimistic.

I love Shake It Off, even if the lyrics may be a bit cliche or whatever. I think my favorite part is still the melody of the verses and her vocal delivery of them.

Florence is headlining the free 2-day Creator's Project Festival (http://www.brooklynvegan.com/archives/2011/09/creators_projec_2.html) in NYC October 15th-16th. This will be the first public performance of some of the new material, and is Florence's only scheduled tour date for right now. I'm hoping I'll be able to get tickets and go, the non-Florence parts of the festival seem pretty cool as well.

Ok-- isn't it "Shake it OUT," not "Off?"

Shake it off is Mariah Carey... I'm pretty sure Florence's is Out. :)

Yeah, it is. But the first blog that leaked it had it mislabeled, so I guess I've just been calling it that out of habit. ;l
