parties, decorations, bad sweaters, food, etc. let us haz holidays?

11-30-2010, 04:55 PM
I put up my wee little wooden tree yesterday. I'm not sure if we're getting a proper fake tree because a) I'm still unemployed and totally broke and b) Shea pretty much lived in the one my parents put up in my house last year. I have some lights to put up and I'm on the hunt for some really cheap and really tacky garland (dollar stores, here I come!)
I used to go all-out with the xmas baking with my mom, but this year I'm only doing up my Irish cream and some peanut butter cups for the family gatherings.

11-30-2010, 05:16 PM
I'd love to go big or go home w/ xmas this year, but if last week's thanksgiving blah is any indication, I think half my menu is coming from a can or deli. There was a not too distant time where I sent out xmas cards December 1st, made a different batch of ******s every week, loved xmas music and movies, and shopped obsessively over *the perfect gift* for everyone. That time is over. *grinches* Also, if the amount of my mom's chatter about her on again off again boyfriend means anything, they're on again, and he may be coming over with her. He's a pretty nice/fun guy actually, and the kids love him... but he's a self professed neat freak, and that makes me panicky that he's just sitting around feeling awkward over some piece of filth that I hadn't thought of/didn't see/didn't get to before he arrives.

Can't I just go back to bed and wake up when it's all over?

11-30-2010, 05:51 PM
Thankfully, shopping is pretty much done. My husband and I had a huge Target-fest last night and yet stayed within our budget. Over the next few days I might put up the window decorations but the tree won't go up until after the 9th. That's my son's birthday and we try to keep it as separate from Christmas as we can. I still have to decide on an actual holiday menu as my father-in-law and brother-in-law will be here. All I know is that I need a lot of food.

11-30-2010, 06:05 PM
T's birthday is this Sunday and I'll be out of town (in NYC!!!) next weekend. I'm not sure when we're going to do our decorating and I haven't decided when to put up our tree. The dilemma is that if I put up the tree, I can't run our gas fireplace anymore because it sucks all the moisture out of the air and our tree will dry up. Also, Taxi Cat goes into complete Destruction Mode when we have a tree up so I have to lock him up 24/7 which makes me feel horrible! Plus I don't know how Sharpie is going to react.

Since having a tree is such an ordeal, I'm considering not even having one...but then it won't feel like Christmas at our house!

11-30-2010, 06:52 PM
JP~Back when I had an ungodly amount of cats living under my roof, we just had to do tabletop (fake) trees for those years. Not nearly as Christmas-y, but it saves a lot of hassle all around, and you still get to enjoy a sorta-tree.

I grew up with real trees (right outta the woods behind our house, no less, which means that they weren't always truly Christmas Tree shaped), but these days I have no problem with a Fakey McFakerson. No watering, no pointy needles everywhere, NO SPIDERS or other little critters, etc. I'm all about decreasing stress and hassle in any way possible around the holidays (hell, at any time of the year!). When I get paid next week, I'm going to get us a colored tree.

That didn't sound right.

Ahem, they have trees in various colors, and I'm deciding between white, pink or purple to grace our humble abode.

Plus we got stockings - big ones for me and boyfriend, and tiny ones for the two cats.

11-30-2010, 08:58 PM
Your dollar store tree is impressive! :)

11-30-2010, 11:43 PM
Thanks! I wasn't sure we'd get to have a tree this year (the one we bought last year mysteriously disappeared in the move) but I was totally thrilled that we were able to put together a 3-ft tree for about $15-$20.

our trees:

i'm usually always excited about christmas, but this year i'm especially into it. not sure why. just feels different. i'm loving it all. we don't do gifts, so that eliminates 90% of the possible stress right there. instead, we take a weekend away together, usually to a city we've never been. but this year, we're going to be tourists in our own city. we're staying uptown in a nice hotel where we can just walk out and experience christmas in charlotte.

as far as family stuff goes, we usually spend christmas eve at my parents' house. and then a few days later, my mom's side of the family gets together for food and trivial pursuit.

and in between, there are christmas specials and ******s and walking through my hometown's christmas lights. we're kind of a big deal (http://www.townofforestcity.com/video.html). ;) and if you actually watch the video...the mural shown on one of the buildings in town was painted by my great uncle.

oh, and ye with trees and cats...use tin foil for the tree skirt. it's shiny, and cats hate it!

12-01-2010, 07:13 AM
Christmas is lame.

My Hanukkah stuff has been up since the day after Halloween. I have an excuse, though, due to the dates for Hanukkah this year.

12-01-2010, 03:51 PM
I'm nowhere in the mood for Christmas this year! Maybe now that it's December I'll warm up to it, but seeing decorations around here go up BEFORE Halloween turned me into Grumpy McGrumperson. I'm going home on the 15th, so I'll most likely do my decorating next weekend. We have a fake tree, but I only put it up the first year I lived here. Not enough room in the apartment to set it up, plus I can see the kitties causing trouble (except Dora, of course).

I am almost feeling Christmas this year. I am totally unprepared for it since my family suggested doing a homemade/second-hand one though. My whole house looks like hobbycraft threw up over a hoarder's dream.

12-02-2010, 03:00 PM
yay for christmas vacation!

12-03-2010, 12:32 AM
The place where I work gives us almost 2 weeks paid off for Christmas/New Year's without us having to use vacation. I've never worked for a company that does that prior to this, but it really motivates me to NEVER EVER LEAVE! Ahahhaaa.

We put up the Christmas tree at work today.

At home, I put up my tree the day after Spanksgiving and then did some outdoor lights too.

My tree + my dog:

Clem! [post28] Look at her, she's waiting for you turn your back so she can eat an ornament! ;l

12-03-2010, 12:56 AM
gosh, she's pretty. look at that muscle! love! [and the xmas stuff's not bad, either! :)]

12-03-2010, 01:24 AM
She's my tiny baby snuggle angel!

12-03-2010, 02:19 AM
My main xmas wish was for a job. And I got one (it's a crap retail job but it's something!) so I can at least get my lady a present now :D
And I know what she's getting me! A very nerdy t-shirt and I r quite pleased :)

12-03-2010, 02:25 AM
^ [post28]

I hope the shirt gets here before Xmas.

My tree + my dog:

Clem is my favorite@/unf dog!

12-03-2010, 05:06 PM
I love Clem! I agree with Barb about her wanting to eat the tree though!

12-04-2010, 03:46 PM
Haha! She's pretty good with the tree. But you can't let her near a trash can, not even if there's no food in it. She will rip it all up.

12-04-2010, 04:33 PM
She's better behaved than my 3 year old!

12-04-2010, 08:30 PM
Here's ours! This year it's classical silver/platinum with some extra reindeer :)

12-04-2010, 08:36 PM
^ I love how it all goes together: white/silver/cream decorations plus white lights - really quite lovely.

12-04-2010, 11:51 PM
Don't forget to put out your stockings tomorrow night. Monday is St. Nick!

12-05-2010, 04:00 AM
I'd meant to decorate for Christmas during Thanksgiving, but this is the second year in a row I've still not got the decoration out yet. *stink eye* I swear, I'm turning into Scrooge. Though I DID finally allow my car radio to play xmas tunes today. And I may have even sang along and made the kiddies laugh with the whole Rudolph song. But yeah. still totally not there yet. NYEH.

we visited my hometown this weekend. it's very christmasy.

one of my favorite things...the walk through dickens' a christmas carol. 30 or so storefronts were painted throughout the town depicting the story of scrooge. it was brilliant.

Holly, those are some serious lights happening over there!

Did Timm have his arm stuck out taking the last picture or did someone take it for you? ;) It's a gorgeous pic of the 2 of you. :)

12-06-2010, 05:56 PM
Beautiful photographs! Barb, I'm curious as to whether you have some special filter on your camera or is that photoshopped to look vintage?

12-14-2010, 11:37 PM
I figured it was about time to put the stuff my parents sent me under our wee tree. When I first got Shea, mom went a little overboard with cat decorations for me ;l I only brought 2 with me when I moved.

We changed our tree topper to Buddy the Elf! [post28]

Where in the Bible does it say that Jesus was American. Did I miss that chapter?

12-18-2010, 10:47 PM
Bah Humbug! Someone has been cutting the wires on our lights outside. This is the third time we've come home to find a section cut of lights cut. I called the police but there is nothing they can do. We don't think anyone else on our street has been vandalized like this.

It's so upsetting. :(

12-19-2010, 01:10 AM
^i already said so on facebook, but that is absolute crap!

but hey, check out these balls.

Of course not. Trees, like Santa Claus, have "always" been a christmas tradition.

I feel sorry for Nathan's office secret santa. We were out shopping today and he grabbed a little mandoline and I thought "oh, we're replacing ours?" Turns out that it's for his secret santa who "may" enjoy cooking.

So we get home and I say "How do you plan on wrapping that?" "Wrapping?" "Were you seriously going to just hand her a shopping bag?" "Yes!"

I wrapped it up nicely and said that I was going to make her an ornament, too. "Why would you make her anything?" "BECAUSE YOU GOT HER A MANDOLINE FOR CHRISTMAS. IT'S A CRUMMY GIFT. YOU ARE AN AWFUL GIFT GIVER."

He just scowled and disappeared in his office. Nice. Jackass!

12-20-2010, 03:52 PM
^seriously, that whole thing is gorgeous.

We finally wrangled up a christmas tree last night that I'll begin putting together in a few minutes. I've never put together a 6' artifical tree before, so it may very well end up looking like a Charlie Brown tree and I may end up bald. Who knows; the possibilites are endless!

When the kids get home, we're having our own little christmas movie party, watching the Polar Express and having popcorn and hot chocolate. hawt chhoc o laaaawt! [no, I can't help it.] Perhaps I'll get the kiddos to endure sitting through one of the muppet christmas movies with me, as well - they don't like them as much as I do, which makes me sad!

12-20-2010, 03:57 PM
I would come watch the Muppet Christmas movies with you if I could! The Muppet Christmas special from years and years ago with the Fraggle Rock characters is one of my must-watch Christmas movies every single year. I also am obsessed with the Muppet Christmas Carol.

*sings "this is my island in the sun"*

12-20-2010, 04:00 PM
I wish you could! The kids started out HATING anything muppet related, which is just blasphemy to me, having grown up with muppet movies and such. They've finally gotten to the point where they can tolerate them, but they aren't a favorite. :( I forsee the next generation having completely muppet-less childhoods, and that is just sad!

12-20-2010, 04:04 PM
Muppets Xmas Carol is required Xmas viewing in this house.

12-20-2010, 04:07 PM
No! That's so sad! I really can't imagine a Muppet-less childhood. I'm going to have a rough time when I have kids, I think. It's just going to be me crying, "Why can't you appreciate this? You NEED this in your life" while they look at me bewildered. ;)

12-20-2010, 04:24 PM
YES! ;l

12-20-2010, 04:58 PM
zomg. this tree is closer to 7' than 6' and I've only got the pole, stand, and top of the tree put together and have already had a mild freakout thinking one of the key pieces of the tree was missing! *dead* [and I've only got 2 hours to get the thing put together... me and my big mouth telling the kids I'd have it done and decorated by the time they get home from school.... zoinks]

I made the wreath out of recycled pot-pourri and a lot of glue! I like my bauble vase, too. Some ribbon and mini ornaments and it was done. I've also made the wreath for the front door by recycling an old artifical Christmas tree and sewing some fabric flowers but I've not got a picture yet!

I've taken to stirring my hot chocolate with the candy canes so there's less of those now! Whoops!

12-20-2010, 10:12 PM
I am a terrible giftwrapper. Boyfriend is an expert, but he got too tired after round one. Oh well.

One of my presents came today and is sitting on the kitchen table. I WANT TO OPEN IT!

12-20-2010, 10:51 PM
Courey: if the tree is too big, just leave the bottom section off!

12-21-2010, 01:34 AM
Thanks, but it ended up being exactly perfect! It's about 6' 5", and with the star on, the whole thing is floor to ceiling and takes up about 1/3 of our teensy living room. omg. I keep looking at it and giggling... I got it free off Craig's and it is beautiful and perfect. Had I not run across it, we probably wouldn't have even had a tree, because for some reason there's NO ONE selling them over here this year. And I live right next door to a xmas tree farm, so the whole thing's weird. I ended up having it all put together and the lights on by the time the kids got home, and then we decorated it together. Only one broken ornament! ;l Then I made "brinner" and we watched Polar Express together while they munched popcorn and hot chocolate. It was a pretty wonderful day. :)

12-21-2010, 01:38 AM
p.s. I still have NO IDEA where the hell we're going to store this thing when we're done with it! ;l
