I'm surprised this isn't getting more coverage here. I initially heard that the fish and bird deaths could be linked to the sudden cold front that moved through the US, perhaps causing stress on the animals, but there's stuff popping up all over the place.

If I can put on my bird nerd hat for a minute, Red-winged Blackbirds (one of the most common victims here) travel in absolutely enormous flocks at this time of year. 5,000 is a a moderate, but not at all extreme number. As I understand it, this kind of die-off is not uncommon at all. It's my guess that this sort of thing happens all the time, but for whatever reason this one story got picked up, and it's now the trendy thing to report. Fear is big in the media after all.

It reminds me a few years back when every shark attack got reported. Everyone on the news was reporting it, asking why there were suddenly so many shark attacks, were the sharks going crazy, etc. In actuality, there'd been a significantly higher number of shark attacks the previous year, it's just that it wasn't the hot topic that year.

That's what I heard on the radio here as well.
I'm not blowing my savings just yet ;)

But haven't you heard? It was caused by the repeal of DADT! (stolen from Barb, who stole it from my mom)

Wow, did Sarah Palin write that little speech? It was so full of incongruous adverbs and pronouns that I could barely make heads or tails of it.
