The french/german TV channel ARTE proposes a game / poll. The aim is to elect 10 "queens of the pop" between the 50's and the 2000's.
You can choose 2 international singers for each decade. For instance, you'll find Nico, Kate Bush, Lady Gaga, Madonna, Patti Smith, PJ Harvey. Tori is included in the 90's.

During the summer, Tv documentaries, based on the votes, will be aired.

I would like to vote, but I don't understand the French. Do you have to register before doing so? What is, for example, "prenom" for instance? *Feels stupid.

Prenom = name
Nom = family name
But I fear if you register, you have to live either in France or Germany to be eligible to participate.

Oh and the Tori photo chosen is horrible de chez horrible. No wonder she doesn't have more votes :rolleyes:

Ooh, I feel special that I can understand some of it. Anyway, it didn't make me register to vote. I just clicked an artist and pressed "voter", and that was all, unless I missed something. It does ask you if you wish to sign up for other benefits after voting, but it does count your vote regardless. I agree, that picture is hideous. Why do people insist on using the worst photos of her? Is it because they're more recent or something?

Horrible photo. Not 90's at all.
No need to register, only if you want to win a silly tshirt.
But you need to indicate a french or german adress

Go on "voter", then click on "non" when the questions "voulez vous participer au jeu concours?" appears -something like that-

That website has some cool flash going on.

Sadly, Tori is up against Britney Spears. Ugh. Was she really around in the '90s?

Why is Charlotte Gainsbourg in the 90's category? Didn't both of her non-teenage albums come out in the 2000's?

I'm assuming they're putting them in the decade they emerged onto the music scene in, as they've Kate in the 70's, despite most of her work being released in the 80's. And they've Kylie in the 80's though her biggest successes have been in the 00's really.

But I wouldn't consider most of the choices "pop"... Oh, well.

70's - Joni Mitchell and Kate Bush
80's - Annie Lennox and Chrissie Hynde
90's - Tori and PJ
00's - GaGa and Beth Ditto

It makes me a little sad to see Tori behind Katy Perry in the voting. Then again, Joni Mitchell has under 300 votes, so obviously the people taking this poll don't have the best taste.

I think in some cases, it's just going to go to whoever is the most popular at the moment. For example, Britney Spears and Mariah Carey are both still relatively popular in the music scene, whereas Tori, Bjork, PJ - they've all dropped below the radar substantially since when they were at their most popular.

It seems like the further back you go in this poll, the more spread-out the votes are. Ten years from now this same poll would look very much different than it does today.
