I loved the France episode, where they go wine tasting and get caught at the airport. Patsy learned the drugs in her bag wasn't real drugs.

Patsy: I need to see my lawyer. I must be allowed to make that telephone call before my freedom is finally snatched away from me.
Customs Officer: That won't be necessary Miss Stone. The white powder we found was a perfectly harmless innocent substance.
Eddie: [gasps] Oh!
Customs Officer: You're all free to go.
Patsy: I beg your pardon?
Customs Officer: You're free to go. Be a bit more careful next time.
Patsy: Just hang on there! I demand that you re-test it! Come back here! I paid a, a huge amount of money for that substance! Don't tell me it was talcum powder!

And then they show a shot of her where she realizes how she actually enjoyed playing table tennis and that it wasn't the drugs. Priceless! :D

Edina: I was taken up, up to heaven and I spoke with God.
Saffy: What about?
Edina: Well, shopping mainly...

Also, Saffy and Pats? Gotta love the interaction between those two:

Edina: My New Year's resolution, sweetie… to have more fun! What's yours, Pats?
Patsy: Ohh, well, I think I'll just try to be more relaxed.
Saffy: You? More relaxed? What is that, dead? Well, that cancels out my resolution.

Is that the one where Patsy is possibly dying in hospital because of someone stabbing a voodoo dolland her Sister comes to get in on the will and tries to kill Patsy with a heroin overdose but she is no match for Patsy and Patsy kills her sister instead??

Genius.

"It's not the money Eddie. It's the horrible realization that i must have actually enjoyed playing ping-pong."

For a good ten 10 years it was rightly against the law for any gay to pick up a phone to make a call without saying "ALLO? ANGLETERRA!?!?!"

And let's hear it for June Whitfield:

Eddie: "Inside of me, sweetie, there's a thin person just screaming to get out"
Mother (most perfect pause in comedy history): "Just the one, dear?"

I'm curious to check out some Cybil now, not just because of the Alicia Witt factor, but everything I read that compares it to a US* version of AbFab.
Christine Baranski would have the Patsy character down pat, f'sure.

(*On that note - was the recent US pilot ever shown/released/leaked?)

Joanna Lumley appears to confirm three new episodes filming in late August

Joanna Lumley has reportedly confirmed that she will film new episodes of Absolutely Fabulous later this year.

In November, Lumley revealed that she was keen to return to the sitcom.

The actress has now been quoted as telling Hello magazine that she will begin work on new instalments this summer.

"In late August I start filming on three episodes of Absolutely Fabulous, which we are all ecstatic about," she said.

However, Lumley said that she has no idea what will happen when the show returns, saying: "Miss [Jennifer] Saunders has been so busy writing Uptown Downstairs Abbey for Comic Relief and also Spice Girls: The Musical, I don't think she's started [the script]!"

Lumley has previously said that she "adored" working on Absolutely Fabulous.

I got it in to my head that Tori based her description of Father Lucifer on Marianne Faithfull as God (I remember Tori saying "she wears a white suit" in an interview, though I can't find it quoted online), but I've just wikichecked and that Ab Fab (The Last Shout) didn't air until Nov 96.

BBC article about the new episodes

Hit comedy Absolutely Fabulous is to return to BBC One later this year with three specials to celebrate the show's 20th anniversary, the BBC has said.

Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley will return as Edina and Patsy along with other original cast members.

Julia Sawalha will resume the role of put-upon daughter Saffy, June Whitfield as Edina's mother and Jane Horrocks as personal assistant Bubble.

The award-winning series ran from 1992 to 2003 with a special in 2004.

It depicted the raucous, fashion addicted lives of PR guru Edina, with her constant weight battles, and her best friend, the glamorous sex-mad magazine editor Patsy.

Saunders, who is also the show's creator, said: "Like a good bottle of champagne we hope that we have got better with time without losing any of our sparkle.

"Last week when we started filming in dear old west London, it was as if nothing had changed. It was raining.

"Nevertheless, we are so happy to be working for an audience that has grown just a tiny bit older like us, but is still willing to let us fall over on TV in the name of PR."

In the first epsiode, audiences will rejoin the ensemble in the middle of a "life-changing experience for one - which affects them all".

In the second show, Edina sets her sights on changing the career of someone described by the BBC as "a very big fish indeed".

In the concluding episode, Eddy and Patsy play their own part in the 2012 London Olympics.

Jon Plowman, executive producer of BBC Comedy and original producer of the Absolutely Fabulous series, said: "Viewers have been fantastically loyal in their devotion to our show, so we're really thrilled to say that it's coming back for three new shows to celebrate our 20th anniversary.

"All of the originals who are back together again are still truly absolutely fabulous and the new adventures of Edina, Patsy, Saffy, Bubble and Mother, plus a few surprising guests, will be a real treat for viewers."

Since the show ended, the show's stars have been kept busy with diverse different roles and activities.

Saunders is involved in a one-off return of the Comic Strip for Channel 4 and is also writing a musical about the Spice Girls. She has also had to battle breast cancer.

Lumley has been very much in the public eye politically due to her campaign to help Gurkhas who retired before 1997 win the right to settle in the UK.

On TV, Lumley's career has continued to flourish, with shows such as Jam and Jerusalem, Mistresses, Marple and the ITV1 documentary series Nile.

Meanwhile, Sawalha has had success with the BBC One costume drama series Lark Rise to Candleford.

The one time I got breathalised for driving erratically was in Manchester (completely sober but being given directions by a car full of drunk lesbians) at 3am and I had to get out of the car and talk to the cops while wearing a T shirt with "DROP THE ATTITUDE SWEETIE, YOU ONLY WORK IN A SHOP" in bright pink on it.

Article from The Guardian:

Some might say they have it large enough on TV. Nevertheless, those ageing miscreants Edina and Patsy look set for a big-screen outing after Jennifer Saunders confirmed she is writing an Absolutely Fabulous movie.

Saunders plans to begin work the script next year. There are also three BBC TV specials in production, which will once again star Saunders as PR agent Edina Monsoon and Joanna Lumley as her chain-smoking best friend Patsy Stone.

"I want to write Ab Fab: The Movie. We'd have so much fun, and I've thought of a really nice idea," Saunders told the Times. "We thought it would be hilarious if [Edina and Patsy] went to a party on an oligarch's yacht, got drunk, fell asleep and woke up in the middle of the ocean … Everyone else has left, and the ship has been moved on."

Christine Langan, head of BBC Films, appeared to confirm the film deal after telling Deadline: "I think [Jennifer's] a genius. I can't imagine anything more exciting than working with her."

The BBC press release for the specials reads: "Eddy PR'd things. She was into every new fad and fashion imaginable and was often to be found at the bottom of a champagne glass, actually more likely a bottle. Not much has changed. Her best friend Patsy worked in magazines and lived the high life. She still does."

oh ok....wait, WAAAAA?!

This thread has totally sucked me in, I remember vaguely when this show aired on Comedy Central but I was way too young at the time to really get and appreciate the humor. So naive! A serious one of its kind, are there really any other comedy shows out there that deal with being a woman in the most over the top way? What a gem.

Stumbled upon this video just now rather by mistake: Jennifer Saunders' hilarious alter ego Edina Monsoon steals the show at ** store lighting ceremony

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXVXrNiXZoY

She might have taken home one of the biggest prizes at the British Fashion Awards, but it wasn't Stella McCartney who was the centre of attention at the turning on of the Christmas lights of her London store last night. Instead it was Jennifer Saunders, in character as her Absolutely Fabulous alter-ego Edina Monsoon, who had the audience in stitches outside the Mayfair store as she was joined by Emma Bunton. * (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2067829/Jennifer-Saunders-hilarious-alter-ego-Edina-Monsoon-Stella-McCartneys-Absolutely-Fabulous-store-lighting-ceremony.html#ixzz1fcOBbzxl)

I have a quick question: I love AbFab, but I'm in no way an expert on the show. It always seems like Fleur has a speech impediment and pronounces things really funny. For example, "the credit crunch." Is this supposed to be a running joke, or is it not part of the humor?

Yes, she's parodying an upper class privately educated way of speaking that's so restricted and contorted it leaves you unsure whether the speaker is dim and sneering down at you, or simply has a speech impediment.

Or maybe I'm over-analysing and it's just a silly voice!

It appears the film is not happening

Comedienne Jennifer Saunders says her BBC show Absolutely Fabulous won’t become a film, despite reports to the contrary. ‘It’ll never happen,’ she tells Glamour magazine.
Of the BBC in general, Ms Saunders says: ‘It’s become top heavy in such an ugly way... They just became an executive-run place for idiots.’ Of creative director Alan ‘Two Salaries’ Yentob, 66, she says: ‘How is Alan Yentob still allowed in the building?
There are questions that need to be answered!’ Former director-general Mark Thompson said in 2010 he wanted to axe pensioner Yentob’s post, but the canny BBC ‘lifer’ remains in position, drawing about £350,000 per year.

I love the first half of Season 5 but have never been crazy about the back half.

I still think that unbroken monologue by Edina in the episode The End (Part1) is the the best 15ms of television ever.

"I don't want that to be my life sweety, the whole world asleep!"

"What do you see when you look in the mirror?
Oh, just the room."

"Well, darling, you have just sort of abandoned me in this sort of wilderness of potential greatness and fabulousness, haven't you? All my walls have gone "flop", "flop"! I'm just like this kind of prisoner that's released!"

Saunders' writing is/was so spot on sometimes.

^1000x yes!

Sadly, moments like that have been missing for a while now. I enjoyed the most recent specials, but the best part of Ab Fab for me were Edina's monologues - which I suppose in actuality were Saunders thoughts filtered through this caricature. In particular, the moments from "Poor" when she goes on trial and rages against the government, or "Jealous," that had the most fabulous lines of Eddie debunking PR while still looking for access to the club. I'm hopeful if this movie comes to light they'll touch on these moments alongside the clownery again. Especially since Edina and Patsy have aged enough to make conversations like the one from "Birthday" more relevant, while hilarious and melancholic all at once.

Kate O'Mara, Patsy's sister (also on Dynasty and Doctor Who), passed away. :(
