I thought it might be nice to have a thread for the best videos and performances from the 2011 tour. I'm calling it the "Hall of Fame" and I've chosen what I consider to be some of the finest single performances of the tour.

15

CLOUD ON MY TONGUE
HELSINKI: SEPT.28, 2011

The Helsinki show was exciting in itself because it seemed to really show the potential that this tour could have, especially in regards to re-energising older songs. "Cloud On My Tongue" once again became eminently listenable because of a) the quartet and b) the pace.

14

BACHELORETTE
MOSCOW: OCT.2, 2011

I've chosen "Bachelorette" here not just because this was the first time she played it in full in a decade but mainly because it's playful, it's energetic, she's having fun with it, and the high notes are great.

13

CURTAIN CALL
WARSAW: OCT.13, 2011

I'm not a big "Curtain Call" fan at the best of times, but I can't deny the power and intensity of this performance here.

12

ON THE BOUNDARY
LOS ANGELES: DEC.18, 2011

The first time she had played this Y Kant Tori Read song, seemingly out of nowhere and some 23 years after it was released. But the bigger surprise was how strong it was, and how passionate the performance was.

11

TEAR IN YOUR HAND
HELSINKI: SEPT.28, 2011

The Helsinki videos are great anyway, but I've included this "Tear In Your Hand" because it actually made me excited about solo performances of old songs again. It wasn't just confined to the quartet arrangements of older songs anymore - even when she was alone at the piano, everything had a new force and energy about it, thank goodness.

10

HEY JUPITER
LONDON: NOV.2, 2011

Wasn't sure which "Hey Jupiter" to include so I've chosen the first one I heard, which was at the Royal Albert Hall. One of the main things I take away from the tour is how revitalised the older material was, and "Hey Jupiter" is one of the main ones I think about.

9

SISTER JANET
LOS ANGELES: DEC.18, 2011

I found this solo "Sister Janet" utterly gorgeous.

8

BLOOD ROSES + ME AND A GUN
JOHANNESBURG: NOV.12, 2011

Very intense. Not the best quality, but it doesn't really matter.

7

SUEDE
PARIS: OCT.5, 2011

The re-arrangements of "Suede" and "Cruel" were two of the most exciting things about the tour, and I am glad she decided to keep them in every quartet show until the end. Wasn't sure which "Suede" to include - the Paris HD videos are a good catch-all.

6

CRUEL
AMSTERDAM: OCT.18, 2011

... But here's "Cruel" from Amsterdam for a fantastic view of Tori with the quartet in the background.

5

ICICLE
NEW YORK: DEC.3, 2011

I really didn't think I'd be including a performance of "Icicle" in a tour highlights thread in 2011, but as soon as I saw this one from the second night in New York I was impressed - her voice, the intensity. Some of her solo performances of recent years have tended to be on the sleepy side but she's really engaged here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-r9VPEYPzg

4

TOAST
NEW YORK: DEC.2, 2011

From the previous night, a stunning version of "Toast," captured with a great HD video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3P2ijTjYnxA

3

SUGAR
MILAN: OCT.7, 2011

I almost put this as my No.1. It's definitely up there - the power and clarity of the high notes at the end is extremely impressive. It's absolutely my favourite vocal moment of a very good tour. Milan does seem to bring out the best in her voice the last couple of times.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGcy8hOPcsM

2

SHATTERING SEA
MOSCOW: OCT.2, 2011

Chose this for the beautiful string quartet introduction and because you can see Tori really going hell for leather on the piano while the quartet go a little crazy too. It has a real sense of urgency. I also think her voice and energy is excellent in this performance.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3g-N6qlsoc

1

STAR WHISPERER
PARIS: OCT.5, 2011

For me, "Star Whisperer" is definitely the centrepiece of the show and the instrumental section is glorious. Again, could have chosen a lot of videos but the Paris HD one is a good one. Couldn't really have picked another No.1.

I actually just, about half an hour ago, sent a friend of mine an e-mail just like this, so I'm going to re-post it here.

Just a list of my favorite performances from the tour with a corresponding youtube:

Hey Jupiter (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_DnjVhkpn4)(my favorite re-arrangement of an old tori song)

Sweet Sangria- Austin (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPxkNI5IFEQ)

Icicle- Seattle (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zcl9oTYENPU) (The most passionate/fiery/intense I've seen it since 2001. Sorry I can't find a better quality video)

Someone Saved My Life Tonight- Boston (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A02pIwNh4Lc)

On The Boundary- LA2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIQVP8cgllE&feature=related) (speechless...and she nailed it)

Total Eclipse of the Heart LA1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=clvnmUDWbuQ&feature=related)- (Speechless again, and SO much better than Boston '05, IMO).

Other favorites were:

Cloud on my Tongue- completely made me love the song again
Banana King LA2- So much better than the Europe versions, IMO
Running to Stand Still NY- Perfect. Perfection.
TTTS w/Datura LA2- it got better each time she did it. This was the best.
Daisy Dead Petals Dallas- The part she did on the keyboard was surprisingly sad to me. Amazing.
Curtain Call Vancouver- Just an incredible performance

Star Whisperer (Every night!). Every single night it put me in a trance. It's such an incredible piece.

Running to Stand Still - NYC 12/3/11
This is one of the greatest things I've heard her do live, ever.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aei61eisQPQ&feature=results_video&playnext=1&list=PL81B82D41A5804643

Really? Are we watching the same video? Sorry to knock it, but it seems waay forced.

Although I haven't watched much from the tour....I'd say any Cruel performance is definiately the string quartet highlight. SO amazing! I'd say On the Boundary is the solo highlight. Can't stop watching either of these.

I wish there were Legs and Boots for this tour. Imagine sound board quality of these performances! Or better yet, how about a DVD?! But instead we have a DVD of visualettes....UGH.

I agree, that Cruel was the SQ highlight of the tour (besides Star Whisperer, Spark, Hey Jupiter, and Shattering Sea).

It's fantastic how well Datura works in TTTS. Who would have known? I think we always thought it'd be more of an introduction to a song, rather a bridge. So glad she did this a few times on this tour, and they audience ate it up!

This tour's Hey Jupiter really hit me hard, and I don't even really like that song. She should just tour with the quartet from now on, for real.

Dallas, The Long and Winding Road. While it was beautiful and poignant for the last show of the tour, and blew my socks off, I stand by it being a missed opportunity for the quartet to play on this one. Still a major treat as a huge Beatles fan.
And LA On The Boundary. WOAH.

The Seaward

The Long and Winding Road really was beautiful. I also agree that its beauty would've only been magnified by the quartet. Still, as a huge Beatles fan, it was a treat.

See, Datura does not fit with TTTS to my ears. I just find it kind of awkward and forced and doesn't do justice to either song IMO.

See I thought that the first time she played it, but I think it really started to gel. I think in that LA version you can see how thematically the two parts do fit: "have a seat while I take to the sky" and "is there room in my heart for you to follow your heart" seem to be like two sides to the same coin. I think it works surprisingly well, actually.

she doesn't belt it 2001 style, but i still think it is such a great & emotional performance.

Star Whisperer - Dublin

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=suTNhksV580

The best performance I've seen of Star Whisperer, which is correctly lauded as the highlight of the tour. By this point the European leg was almost over, so she was confident playing with the quartet. The playing here is extremely tight and she really gives it her all on the piano. Awesome view of the quartet as well. I also think her voice was at its best at this point in the tour, some American shows had a bit of baby voice IMO. Shattering Sea and Suede from this show were also brilliant.

Pretty Good Year - Milan

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rxplHROhemo

Somebody has done an excellent job compiling footage from different tapers to make this video. Amazing version - the bridge really shows how good her voice was when you compare it to other versions from recent years, especially 2009.

Smells Like Teen Spirit - St. Petersburg

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRXbCJc5dfU

My favourite version of this song. I never really enjoyed it live until this version. She does some great belting here in the middle and at the end.

I fail to see what sounds forced about that. It's one of her most outstanding vocals in the past decade. I suppose you might prefer her more tinny, nasal style. This is a place she's actually using her chest voice for once.

Right. That RTSS was one of the greatest things I ever saw her play live as well. It was simply amazing and absolutely captivating.

Best Shattering Sea out there!

I haven't watched any videos of the Chicago show I attended, but based on my memory, this is definitely a better performance. Chicago had some baby voice going on and it seemed she was having trouble keeping up. It surprised me b/c I'd seen that complaint thrown around about Fearlessness, but seen nothing but praise for shattering sea. After watching this, I see where all the praise came from. It's excellent.

Although i'm not entirely sure this is the right thread to ask this question..here goes( and apologies if this topic has already been discussed previously)...Was the piece of music played by the Apollon Musagete Quartet at the beginning of each show on the NOH tour just prior to Tori's entrance and performance of the superb Shattering Sea an original piece written especially by the quartet themselves? My knowledge of classical music in general is extremely limited and i wondered whether the piece might be from some classical source....anyway, i'd love to know if anyone has information about it as personally, i really loved how it set the scene for the shows and i consider it to be such a haunting and beautiful aspect of the tour...Well done the Apollon boys....or as Tori refers to them.."The Fab Four"!!!
