What do we have--a three year gap and a six year gap between albums? I hope this doesn't portend a nine year wait this time around! LOL

This thread reminded me that I forgot to listen to the full version of that song she did written by those students. "So Sleepy" or something? I need to find that.

I actually just popped in "When the Pawn..." this week and it's hands down my favorite record by anyone ever. I miss Fiona Apple!

When the pawn is a masterpiece, everything on it holds perfectly, both the rawness, the lightness and the sensitive side.

I don't know what my favorite song is. Probably Never is a Promise, Criminal, or Across The Universe. Sometimes when I'm mad I like Limp best.

Does she have any intentions of doing more music? I thought I read years ago that she wasn't going to, but then Extraordinary Machine came out.

Oh, Fiona. I still can't believe how young she was when she wrote Tidal and When The Pawn.

I truly hope she doesn't give up making (her own) new music for good. I don't mind this long absence if there's something coming down the line. I appreciate that she seems to only write and make music when she feels like she has something to say rather than releasing a new album every two years just to keep with a schedule. Hopefully she'll have something to say soon.

Here (http://www.twentyfourbit.com/post/675513587/fiona-apple-so-sleepy)is a little bit of info.

I am so happy to see she is still working with Jon Brion. I am pretty sure they have been working on something amazing since they did EM.
Miss you, Fiona!

THIS.

my favorite today is "i know". it's that part at the end, "and if it gets too late, for me to wait, for you to find you love me and tell me so. it's okay, you don't need to say it.." and the music stops, then the softly brushed drums lead the way back in. you're just repeating in your head, "i'll know, i'll know". it's that sad resign that you know she's feeling, even though she doesn't finish the phrase. truly heartbreaking.

The top top spot for me is either I Know or Fast As You Can. Paper Bag, Get Gone and The Way Things Are are right behind. A Mistake is the only track that I feel any ambivalence toward.

Oh man everything sounded good on the Nickel Creek tour. As I've mentioned, two of my three top acts are Nickel Creek and Fiona Apple, so them touring together was random and amazing. The collaborative spirit on that tour (as opposed to the traditional opening act schtick) epitomizes how music should be done.

Brambles, what's the setlist for the Bumbershoot show?

the Bumbershoot show was actually a surprise guest appearance by Fiona during a set by Jon Brion. they performed:

Paper Bag
Fast As You Can
He's Funny That Way
River Stay Away From My Door
On the Bound

it's definitely worth hearing because they're different arrangements of the songs than usual and Fiona's vocals are amazing, especially on River Stay Away From My Door actually.

Someone over on the Beyontherubicon.net recently posted some brief bits about the new album. It was taken from a mag that interviewed Charley and Fiona.

bought it today. FIONA AND CHARLEY ARE PRODUCING! he talks for a bit about fiona, meeting her, and the new album. im at work so i have to be brief, so here's the stuff about the new album:

"a little over a year ago i did a gig with fiona and [keyboardist] dave palmer, just a trio.

"for some time she'd been looking to perform her music in a different way than the original formula, which i believe may have been research toward a new path for ideas to flow musically. and during that phase i felt she'd soon find new territory to explore and create.

"not long after, she called and asked if i would listen to some new songs and ideas she'd been working on. the song treatments were piano and vocal only and on my first listen, i not only thought they were amazing, but also that they could have been released just as they were. i thought her fans would love that as well. needless to say, i was overwhelmed to be one of the first to hear the body of work, although once i landed back on my feet, i realized the challenge in front of me.

"fiona expressed wanting to incorperate minimal instrumentation to the new material. she asked me how i would join rhythm to the pieces and if any ideas came to me, would i share them with her. she was already in producer mode.

"a few weeks later i told her i had some ideas to investigate, so we went into the studio and it all began to unfold. in two weeks we'd pretty much built strong treatments for half of the songs. the feeling i had was like being on a great first date, one night after the next. she liked the character and space we were constructing. eventually, i began to wonder when we would hit a bump, but some universal force left the path wide open for us to grow deeper into the journey.

"at the end of two straight weeks, we looked at each other, exhausted but buzzing on something we'd never been on before, and she said she wanted to continue working on the project together.

"fiona and the material have exposed a much winder spectrum of my musical voocabulary, even to my surprise at times. seldom does a musical experience reach my soul in the way fiona's has. i'm blessed to have this chapter in my life."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
FIONA SPEAKS
(theres a pic of her with a purple wig on):

"my memories about charley, and with charley, are all very clear to me. and for someone who doesn't have a lot of memories, i clearly remember the first time i talked to charley and the feeling that i had, which was before we even performed together on tv.

"there's something about charley that makes me pay attention to what's happening 'right now.' on the road, there was one song that we would do, which was sort of the wild card. it was really difficult, and we often felt afraid playing it, but we would always meet eyes before doing it. i don't know if that's something everyone does, but with charley, i could be within a whirlwind in my mind in the middle of a show, and then remember, "i've got to look at charley before we play this song," and as soon as i looked at him i would feel very, very focused and not afraid.

"he is my partner now in music. we're working together producing my next album, and the way that i feel with him has influenced the way i write. i've written things that are a litle more challenging for me to play and a little more challenging for me to sing because i know that he's going to be with me and that i'm going to get that feeling of focus and dedication to every single thing that i get when i'm around him.

"i'm not really great at speaking in musical terms, so it's hard for me to talk about specifics, but i'm attracted to his playing and i'm attracted to his language."

It's interesting to hear about Fiona taking an interest in the production side of things. I tend to think of her more as a songwriter more than anything else, but the EM debacle showed that she obviously has very strong ideas about how she wants the final versions of the songs to sound. I'm glad to hear that she wants pretty bare instrumentation.

Adam
10-07-2010, 02:40 PM
Charley’s lengthy list of playing credits includes work with The Divinyls, David Letterman Show (NBC), Keith Richards and the Expensive Winos, Hiram Bullock, Bernie Worrell, The B 52’s, Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters, Mariah Carey, Shelby Lynne, Cracker, Jeffery Gaines, Doyle Bramhall Jr., Jayhawks.

That's exciting for me. Hiram was a great musician who was a friend of Joni Mitchell's, played with Jaco Pastorius and also on Steely Dan's Gaucho. He also played with Miles Davis, Paul Simon, etc.

Basically, I'm not familiar with Charlie Drayton, but if he worked with Hiram, he must be amazing.

There's a new piece in Spin (http://www.spin.com/gallery/close-rocks-coolest-stars?page=8#main) that has a new picture of Fiona and a small quote. Fiona says, "Not to be gross, but music is sort of a creative mental form of shitting. You keep taking things in and putting them out to make more room to take more nutrients in. Life nutrients: conversations with people, experiences, seasons. Hopefully, though, what you put out isn’t shit."

The quote and picture are from a new book, Music by Andrew Zuckerman, that will feature an essay by Fiona (as well as a bunch of other big names) so people may want to be on the look-out for that too. It comes out November 1st.

Here's an interesting bit of news: (http://trianglemusic.blogspot.com/2010/11/punch-brothers-dazzle-carrboro-crowd-at.html)

The quintet of musical savants known as the Punch Brothers took the stage at the Cat's Cradle in Carrboro on Sunday night to a roar of cheers and applause that brought a smile to Chris Thile's face which would be a permanent fixture the whole night.

The band dazzled the crowd with their virtuosity and pop sensibility, playing a large number of songs from their latest album Antifogmatic. A cover of Fiona Apple's song "On the Bound" was an excellent inclusion in the set. Banjo player Noam Pikelny noted that the band recently recorded a song with Apple which will likely be on her new album that expected to be released in 2011.

Nice! I figured the various Nickel Creek members would show up on the new album... I remember rumors about her being in the studio with the Watkins siblings a few years ago, and even though nothing ever came of that, I wouldn't be shocked to see them on a track or two as well.

Am I the only one who thought the Fiona show with Nickle Creek was painfully boring?

I've never been to a better show. It was a Nickel Creek show, though, so if you don't like them... I still can't imagine not liking the Fiona portions though. It's the only time I've seen her appear to enjoy being a musician and she clearly loved collaborating with other young prodigies. Her giddiness was infectious at my show in NY. Bored would not be a word that comes to my mind.

I wholly admit that the first time I heard of Nickel Creek was when american friends here went crazy about the fact they were playing the small local venue here. They were in shock about being able to hang out with them in the pub afterwards, as it's that small. I was like, who?

But aren't they the same people who are playing with Fiona on the live videos on the DVD that came with Extraordinary Machine? Or am I wrong? I seem to recall a fucking amazing mandolin player on that version of Fast As You Can, and I was told that was one of the guys from Nickel Creek? (they're totally not known here)

Nick
11-16-2010, 12:40 PM
The pre-self-titled isn't really worth the time; I'm their hugest fan, and I still would never listen to it. It's pretty much just bluegrass/Christian standards they recorded as very young (albeit prodigy-level) children. Unfortunately, they have broken up, so I would just recommend getting all 3 albums (with Why Should The Fire Die being the best of the bunch). Sara Watkins' solo CD is my favorite of the non-Nickel Creek output, but Chris Thile also has some good solo/duo albums (some instrumental and some with vocals), plus a new band called the Punch Brothers with 2 albums, and Sean Watkins has 3 solo albums and a duo album with the frontman from Switchfoot (Fiction Family). My fingers are crossed for an eventual reunion... I would settle for a studio version of When I Get Low I Get High with Fiona. It was my favorite part of that show!

Yup, Chris Thile played on Fast As You Can on the DVD, and has played it solo at a number of solo shows. They're all part of that Largo crew - performers that do low-key shows in various states of collaboration at a club in California - with Jon Brion and Glen Phillips, etc, which I assume is how they hooked up with Fiona.

TRACKLISTING AND INTERVIEW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Apple says the last tour left her exhausted.

"After that I was exhausted. I only listened to classical music-- late Beethoven, some Schubert-- and old jazz and vaudeville standards like Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, all those. Some Tom Waits and Kate Bush, too. So the new album is definitely a combination of all those styles."

The still-untitled album includes two covers-- Ella Fitzgerald and Kate Bush-- in addition to originals. Stay tuned for more news.

Tracklist:

1. When I Get Low (I Get High)
2. Pleading Child
3. Italian Tympani (Tymps 2)
4. Tear and Tell Her
5. A Coral Room
6. Under Waves
7. Pier Gynt Suite
8. From Far-Off Places
9. Trout in Water
10. Rhapsody in Blue
11. The Writer Talks
12. Immense Joke

I just started reading "her" Twitter and I kind of laughed a lot. It just seems weird to me that someone in NC reads her fan mail and then sends it to Fiona twice a month or something. Do people send fan mail anymore? Especially when the person is on Twitter? BUT THEN Margaret Cho tweeted @RealFionaApple about the Grammy nomination. And now I don't know what to think!

It has to be fake, though. I don't picture Fiona for a Twitter person. I really only picture her playing with snails (http://www.femalefirst.co.uk/music/musicnews/Fiona+Apple-13601.html) or something.

When the Pawn, The Dreaming and Pele here. :)

Surprise, surprise. We have the same three. Although sometimes HOL is traded for TD.

June seems awfully soon for an album we know nothing about, but I'm not complaining. If the album is coming out then, we should be getting a press release/single within a couple weeks! Even if this info is a little off, I'll gladly take a single in June.

I know I'm getting ahead of myself here, but I can't wait for another Fiona tour. She's such an amazing live performer, and I'd love to see her do some of the various covers like I Want You or When I Get Low, I Get High that she's randomly done since the last tour in addition to the new material.

I wouldn't mind if an album just dropped out of nowhere. All the hype and build-up gets frustrating. Sometimes I get impatient (like with Kate's newest) and other times the hype actually begins to kill my anticipation for an album (like with Gaga). It'd be a breath of fresh air to have an announcement with a release a week or two later.

SFIJ (and Pele and JLP and many more) are just that slight next tier down for me. WTP and Choirgirl are just perfection. Suffice to say the 90's > mostly everything else.

I'm of the same era and mind.

Choirgirl, Pele, WtP, and SFIJ are tucked nicely into my top 10 albums somewhere. I think the only artist post 2000 to break into my top 10 is Sufjan Stevens.

Are we becoming our parents who tortured us a children by telling us that what we listened to was just noise? LOL. The 90's were my dad's 60's. There was just soooo much music in the 90's. Not that there isn't now, but so many genres were emerging and the 90's were like this huge boiling pot of musical gumbo. We had grunge, trip hop, the Lillith gals, house, r&b, a new sort of hip hop, Tori!, Bjork!, PJ!, Fiona!....I could go on and on. Everyday I was discovering something new in the 90's. 120 Minutes was my televised Bible. Oh gosh. Britpop! Boy band! Girl Groups! Riot girls!

It was simply an amazing decade for music. And 92' , 96' and 98' were my favorite years ( and not just because of Tori).

Singer-songwriter Fiona Apple will be back in the spotlight after the tortured release of her third album Extraordinary Machine. Andantino will be her fourth album, and is set to be released July 9th through ANTI records. Apple will debut the new single-- the title track-- on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Thursday, May 12.

I think the 2000's have been just as good as the 90's in terms of music, actually. The 90's stuff just has more sentimental value for me, and I think stuff that was on the radio was a lot better, but overall it is a wash.

Ditto. There was awesome music in the 00's too. And this decade is shaping up to be interesting too. Every decade has great music, but emotional attachments are stronger in your teen years I think, for whatever reason. Life-defining moments are a nearly weekly event ;)

Edit: "Andantino" is a lovely album title, actually.

No way it can be June. "Not About Love" video was released months before her album was released. And then they even released a 2nd song "Parting Gift" before the release. Fiona did live performances weeks before the release.

I know you can't really use EM as a model for how her promotion usually is.. because of the special scenario.. the album being leaked years ahead of time and what not. But there were so many great magazine articles that hyped up EM before it came out. I remember she and Sheryl Crow were interviewed together in one of the magazines in June talking about their Fall releases. It was the same magazine that ranked Kate Bush's new album as the 3rd most anticipated album that year or that fall (Entertainment Weekly???).. can't remember which, this was 2005 so I am glad I can remember at all.
I just think there would be a whole lot more going on right now/I MEAN right now if it was coming out in a month.

EDIT: I'm not saying that "promotion" would be effective. Epic is notorious for doing the bare minimal.. but there would be more than enough for people like us who are LOOKING for the information.

Jake

The promo model is so different, though. I think Radiohead is the perfect example of how an album can just suddenly be unleashed to the public with little to no promotion.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that "Parting Gift" and "O' Sailor" were released together in mid-August and the album was announced then as well. And then we got the album in early October. The video for "O' Sailor" was released in October as well.

I'm sure promotion will kick in around the time the single is released. I think that's pretty standard. Once the album is officially given a release date, I bet magazines and blogs will be reporting on it then.

I hope she pulls a Radiohead. With all of the drama surrounding EM's release, I could see why that type of quick, I have a new album and it's coming out in five days method be appealing to her. I know it would be appealing to her fans. A sudden release like that would blow the music world up and probably even make the album do better than following a traditional release/promo format.

Mike_p I agree with you about "Parting Gift" being released in August. I was just saying that at least two songs were put out by Epic before the album dropped. Tori is lucky to get a video for one song for one album, these days, for the entire campaign (so to speak), and Fiona had two video's before the album was even out. The "Parting Gift" video was pretty basic, just her in front of a piano, but it was so "big" to promoters that a lot of hoop-la was made before it came out about her brother directing it... and then it was released and people were like, "I could have directed that." haha. She was sitting @ a pretty piano, tho. hehe
The "O'Sailor" video (which came much later) was so good. I loved everything about it. Kudos to Epic, there.

At the end of the day, I do hope it comes out in June because I want a Fiona Apple album now. But for the longevity of her career, I hope they spend at least a good month or two promoting it so it will chart well.
