View Full Version : Witch House/Drag

Anyone else rooting around in this area? I suppose Fever Ray is a good signpost toward Drag, kind of dirty, gothed-out, shoegazy synth-pop, generally found swirling around the Disaro (http://www.facebook.com/pages/DISARO/368923839137) label and lurking in corners all over the internet. There is some weird shit going on down here.

With names like GR†LL GR†LL, †‡† (on Soundcloud and Myspace as rrritualzzz), B▲L▲M▲C▲B (http://www.last.fm/music/Balam+Acab), ///▲▲▲\\\ (http://www.last.fm/music/%252F%252F%252F%25E2%2596%25B2%25E2%2596%25B2%25E2%2596%25B2%255C%255C%255C/Sample+EP), it all seems very silly and pretentious, although Ellis (http://www.warrenellis.com/?p=9751) delighted me with the phrase "lexical darknet" to describe the development of a new underground, where bands are unGoogleable and only traceable by those who know.

Basically I'm loving the combination gauzy drone and battered drum machines, so I wanted to share. There's also some crossover with the whole hypnagogic pop/chillwave thing that's drifting across the internet, which I may also start a thread about.

Seeing as there may be some interest, here is a link to a thing!

Tri Angle presents Let Me Shine For You (http://dismagazine.com/disco/6173/tri-angle-records-presents-let-me-shine-for-you/), a drag tribute to Lindsay Lohan. Obviously brilliant.

And because an amazing title goes a long way, The Drone Cabinet of Doctor Trance:

I like! I misread the thread title and i thought this was called Drag House. I thought, "fierce, some drag queens rapping about short dick men and false eyelashes."

Oh! I totally didn't even see this thread. I'm really trying to delve into the genre and discover some new artists. I can't stop singing the praises of oOoOO.

I can't stop listening to this one...

the synths are straight out of an '80s B-horror movie... an entire subgenre like this? Um, count me in

weird name for a genre, made me think this was some kind of house music.

Stunning.

And just a little bossy.

I downloaded THIS (http://louisvillegoth.forumotion.com/music-board-f5/fresh-goth-mess-compilation-various-subgenres-t45.htm), which is not entirely witch house/drag but has a few of those bands on there.

SALEM kicks ass! And Zola Jesus, and White Ring!
S-S-Spectres is ok too.
Despite their names, Paid in Puke and Shits & Giggles are not so great.

What do you mean, despite? Don't you mean "As their names indicate"?
Although I once read that Madonna originally considered taking on Paid in Puke as her artist name in her beginnings.

YES, EXACTLY!!!

How awesome would it be to say Paid In Puke and Shits & Giggles are among your favorite bands, without lying or being poseury?

OK, this is really good shit right here.

You may have seen me gas on about Zola Jesus, and that's definitely my favorite of this genre, but all this stuff is sounding good. I especially liked the White Ring thing that Pete linked, and I'm enjoying the LiLo comp right now. And I'm downloading the oOoOO ep that Pete linked.

If y'all like this stuff, you might enjoy an artist named Gary War. (Like ZJ, he's on the marvelous Sacred Bones label). Think this kind of music with the goth qualities excised; it's more like straight-up synthpop all fucked up and damaged by noise terror. Really, really cool stuff.

I love this thread. Really digging oOoOO and White Ring.

Pete, maybe this is a silly question, but is there a way I can see the titles and the artists on the soundcloud tracks you posted?

^ Click the "info" button on the right-hand side of each clip.

I'm loving oOoOO, too, and Modern Witch:

@Steve That Gary War track is immense, thanks for posting it. (I kept reading it as Gay War, though.)

I think this is just super:

Dead Gaze - I'm a Mess When You're Gone (http://www.picturesforsadchildren.com/blog/imamess.mp3) (((AWESOME))))

I got The Spoils (http://www.sacredbonesrecords.com/releases/sbr022/) from Zola Jesus and Horribles Parade (http://www.sacredbonesrecords.com/releases/sbr023/) from Gary War -- REALLY digging the latter, need some more time with the former.

Have you heard Stridulum yet, Jim? Definitely more accessible than The Spoils, although I love that too. "Six Feet From My Baby" kills.

Glad to see Gary War love here, although he isn't really witch house.

^ Yeah I was going to say, Gary War sounds like neither witch house nor drag. More like destroyed synth pop, or Faust (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-J6Bscor_E)after serious inhalant abuse.

I will give that other Zola Jesus album a listen. They seem all right, kind of like what Diamanda Galas would be like with more music and less screeching.

"Destroyed synth pop" is a perfect description for Gary War.

Well, Salem's King Night leaked. It loses steam a little bit towards the end, but overall, I'm really enjoying it.

I'm currently addicted to Sick right now:

Also, Balam Acab's EP, See Birds, is pretty amazing, too, although the EP is more of a lighter sound than what's usually associated with witch house/drag/whatever...

ugh, I do not like Salem's album at all! The Water EP was pretty good, but "creep-hop" just isn't doing it for me right now.

Balam Acab is quite good, love the video for the See Birds (Moon).

I feel a bit like this whole thing has already deflated. The B▲L▲M▲C▲B EP was pretty good, but the oOoOO record on Tri Angle felt a bit flat and the Salem album failed to grab me. Everything I heard six months ago when I started this thread still sounds great, but right now nothing's really lived up to the promise.

Oh well, looks like it's suicide again for me!

lol, witch house. I'm so over that rubbish, and don't even get me started on night bus. It's all about lemon drop now, although I can clearly see a group of artists ready to splinter off from that movement to establish dune buggy.

I didn't think Grimes was really true witch house, but idk.

I still listen to these rather frequently:

I was going by Pitchfork's christening of her as the Pop Princess of Witch House and K-pop or whatever (what's K-pop? All you youngsters with your new names;)). But, yes, Grimes is so much more, and now with her own proper thread.

I know it's not house music, but some time ago I was listening to Great Spangled Fritillary from Cocteau Twins and in the opening minute the music reminded me of some of the "witch house" sound samples I had heard
