Is this a new venue for Tori?

I realized earlier 'Marianne' hasn't appeared yet?!

Yeah I don't think she has ever played there.

I thought that maybe she is giving the songs featured on Gold Dust a break because she has forgotten how to play them away from the orchestra?

She usually stops playing songs from the previous record on new tours. So night of hunters and gold dust songs are probably taking a break. She only played Jackie once, I think.

Edit: Oh well, precious things, silent and winter, of course.

I wonder why she writes the key each song starts in, and in a different color on the setlists.

Apparently in the past Tori has sometimes forgotten which key to start in which is understandable considering the large number of different songs she'll play during a tour. I honestly don't know how many artists have set-lists as varied as hers and it's pretty incredible if you think about it - she's pulling material from 14 albums plus covers!

Faust
06-04-2014, 11:43 PM
One of my favorite Tori moments is from this radio performance she did of Muhammad My Friend in 1996 where she stops herself realizing she's playing in the wrong key and after making a deal out of it starts playing again in the exact same key without realizing it ;l

And no surprise that she makes mention of them now. In 2009 it was insane how many key changes some songs went through from night to night. Ophelia went through a bunch.

I can't remember where I read it (Piece by Piece maybe?) where she says she has to make sure she doesn't play songs in the same key back to back in shows, so she needs that to organize setlists and shuffle things around.

I´ve always thought she should have more days in between her concerts to rest her voice. I guess she doesn´t find it convenient when she does not do it. Im still happy she´s recovered most of her vocal strenght.

This was her third show in a row, I think any singers voice would be tired.

Andreas

I think that honestly, it's a bit of an impossible equation. She probably needs to take better care of her voice these days, but for a tour to break even or make a profit, she probably have to do a certain number of shows a week. Every day she's not performing is a day without profits but a lot of expenses (crew, equipment, vehicles, gas etc).

If you read about the economics side of touring in Piece by Piece, she can't afford not to do as many back to back dates as possible. The costs are staggering. And tours are the only revenue in the game now. It blew my mind.

If you think about the pressure she has to make great art, combined with the pressure to perform at an excellent level (and for Tori, performance expectations are WAY high, because that's her hallmark), combined with the pressure to run a profitable business (Tori Amos, Inc.)... you begin to realize that she is not kidding when she talks about her work ethic. Girl is a machine!

I do not envy her.

Wow, what I wouldn't give for some of these YKTR songs to have lingered until (and been produced in) the Little Earthquakes era. Actually, that makes me wonder if anything (Tear In Your Hand comes to mind) was actually kicking around in the YKTR days.

With the length of time some songs take her to finish and commit to a recording, I wouldn't be surprised.

I think China was the first song written for Little Earthquakes, and it's from 1987, around the YKTR era. Maybe a little bit afterwards.

TIYH was one of the last songs she wrote for LE (with Girl, Precious and the title track) in 1990-1991, when Tori and Eric had the second chance to make listening the album to Doug Morris, after his first rejection.

I can imagine a YKTR version of Flying Dutchman now, production somewhere between Boundary and Fayth.

"Hai kid! I gotta RAY-ud fur yooo-ah!"

Probably a lot of sexxxxay "ughs!" in the chorus...

That chapter kind of blew my mind, too. Tori is under an incredible amount of pressure and what she manages to give on every level is astounding to me. The schedule on this tour is so tight. So far, she seems in great spirits, strong and healthy. Hope she's taking the best possible care of herself.

She's mentioned eating a lot of greens, which I've got to say, along with lots of lean protein, gives me more energy than just about anything else, rabbit comments be damned. I was surprised to see she's chewing Trident gum but I know from experience, it's hard to find something more natural when on the road.

I'm relieved to see there is at least a two week break between Cape Town and Vancouver. Hope she fits in a good long Floridian rest.

I don't know how she does it. The travel alone would destroy me.

I think it's indicative of how special Oysters is to Tori as she took off her glasses, and not need to look at a sheet of music/lyrics to know it. It seems to be close to her heart.
