Hi All! :) Hope you are well. I'm very excited about seeing Tori tonight! The weather is making it as difficult as possible - blowing dust and thunderstorm warnings all along the highway to Phoenix. But hopefully I'll make it safely. Home on the Range…or some Scarlet for the southwest?

After Hyperballad last night, I'm hoping for a Big Time Sensuality / Original Sinsuality mash-up!!!!!

I predict lots of Scarlet. It's amazing how well Scarlet works when driving through the desert of the southwest, I did it just a month ago. Maybe Juarez? If so I predict a loop on Juarez, though I wish she'd do it 99 style again.

I listened to Fast Horse today and was thinking how it's surprising that it hasn't been done with all the synths and beats. I could see it being really good, but I could see it being a cheesy fail.

I just listened to Zero Point walking down the street here in Vancouver for the first time in a couple of years. As long as it doesn't have a backing track but I think it would benefit most from a band arrangement, with a guitarist.... a good one.

I'm not too excited about this one. Zero Point and Datura are great in theory, but when you think about it, they're both more like studio experimentation/improv tracks that meander around and probably wouldn't translate well live. I'm hoping she's shortened it into something cohesive that works.

Yeah, maybe it was still interesting (I mean novelty alone must make it interesting!) but the problem with stripping away the backing on Zero Point is that, well, it's kind of a drone and doesn't really do anything vocally. Which is kind of shown in that clip. :( I like ZP but it's a little on the long side.

Anyway, though, Honey AND Sister Janet! :)

Cute... but honestly what I love about Zero Point is the package deal. The synth, the bass, the guitar, the drums packaged with the vocals. That's what's makes the song. I can't see it working solo. Especially because I really love Catons guitar.

Yo Jupiter

Zero Pointttttt, I was initially afraid she could ruin it with some backing track or cheesy loops, but THIS.IS.PERFECT well at least this short clip. I just can't wait to hear the beginning/ending + the ''holding the hand'' part, those are the best.

RisingPhoenix
07-26-2014, 11:47 AM
Just an observation. It's the shows after the ones you think will be great that are great. You would think LA would get such a debut like zero point but it was actually Arizona. Similar things have happened before and I hope the trend doesn't continue with Chicago. I think it has something to do with she associates certain songs with cities and then when people request others she wants to play them but can't squeeze them in so she plays them the next night.

ETA: I will admit Muhammad My Friend was a great surprise so maybe that pushed Zero Point back.

RisingPhoenix
07-26-2014, 11:49 AM
Thanks for posting that clip. Honestly, that's the part of the song that irritates me. She sounds like she's singing with marbles in her mouth. (It was the same way with the studio verson). I love the rest of the song so I'm hopeful there's no backing track.

I´ve always thought Zero Point has some of the coolest parts of all of her songs. But in its integrity is a total mess with no cohesion, and thats saying much even for her. With a proper production and some cohesion it could have been one of the queens in her catalogue.

07-26-2014, 02:04 PM
I really think that Zero Point benefits a lot from the "holding her hand" bridge... in the same way that "room in your heart" bridge totally makes Datura for me. I listen a lot to both songs just because of those bridges, so I'm eager to see how it translates to live.

That's the part I was interested, and it's simply divine! Love the dark synth backing in the beginning and then the piano takes over with some more strength! Love itttt, so happy she managed to translate it perfectly.

Ending with Purple Rain would kill me. Really hoping that it's coming again for STP.

What amazes me most about Zero Point live is that I remember back in like 2003-2005, when it wasn't even released yet, wishing that it would magically appear at my show. I think we all did. I remember wondering if that particular show I was at would be the one where she would all of a sudden start singing it, and how it would be epic. Even though it's now been put onto a CD, and isn't so surprising anymore, it's still incredible to see her actually finally performing it there. Now if she would just perform/release "To The Fair Motormaids of Japan...." I am SO curious about that song!!

I've noticed similarly that at her bigger shows, sometimes the setlists are pretty standard. London, Sydney, Chicago, NYC, LA, Bay Area... She tends to take more risks/debuts with her smaller shows. Also if she's doing a 3 show run, it seems like the 2nd or 3rd show is the show you want to go to.

Which is why I'm glad I'm going to the MN and Chicago.

I really like that Zero Point!

When I saw it on the set list, I was expecting it to be like the AATS she played in one of the shows - with a repetitive keyboard loop, playing half of it, and repeating lines over because she was tentative and/or didn't know it. So I'm really pleasantly surprised to see she played the entire thing (including the whispering Photon Band bits at the end), knew it, and was really into it by the look of it.

Zero Point can come again :)

ETA: I will admit Muhammad My Friend was a great surprise so maybe that pushed Zero Point back.

But she did debut Raspberry Swirl for the first time in ages in Chicago in 2007, and that's also the one and only time she did MAAG with the band.

I really love what she did with Zero Point, and I don't even care for that song.

What bugs me is why she insists on the backing tracks for Wedding Day or Cornflake Girl when she just played fcking Zero Point in its entirety solo and it was sublime.

I want to petition to have Wedding Day solo before the tour is over.

I sort of getting why she might want the extra instrumentation for Wedding Day's cadence but absolutely with Cornflake Girl, and I'd add stuff like General Joy and Raspberry Swirl to that list as well.

She's nailed Zero Point and i i e e e and done a pretty solid job doing Raspberry Swirl solo. For a woman talking about rocking it at 50, I'm not sure how all of the loop/backing crutches are helping to prove that with a couple exceptions for aesthetic reasons.

Color me surprised by that Zero Point. That was on point- I'm not a huge fan of the song but that is a top-tier performance from her this year.

This show has entered my top 5! It's right up there with San Diego '01 (early show). God Damn. Zero Point was ON POINT! I was a little nervous about it, but it was perfection. Truly haunting. Even TBK + ADP tracks were stunning. Lost my shit to Playboy Mommy. SO much Pink. I needed Honey and Sister Janet. These classic covers! Purple Rain was outstanding. From UG, I was hoping for either Oysters, Weatherman, Vicar's, Wedding or Wild Way. Weatherman was gorgeous. Wedding day was great even with the backing track.

Wasn't too big on CFG, that damn backing track. Would've died to get iieee instead, but Voodoo was killer. What a show. I hope more videos pop up soon.

I think that's what's up with my request for Pretty Good Year, i'm expecting it in the next 5 to 7 shows.

I have a friend who will be attending both the Dallas and Austin shows, and he plans on requesting Ode to the Banana King at the Dallas M&G. He's even going to bring her a photocopy of the sheet music (which is what she asked him to do last time he requested it, and she played it!). Perhaps we'll actually get that one in Austin!

That performance of Zero Point was phenomenal. The song finally sounded like a story and it was easy to get lost in it, which I don't think the studio version succeeds at. The last "I found out..." made me tear up. I hope she performs it again.

I almost pissed my pants when I just came in and saw that ZP was played. I was just thinking today about how I'd ask her to play it. She had SO many opportunities to screw it up ( like Menju said: bad loops, singing phrases over and over, leaving out the best parts, etc) but this was AMAZING!!!!! Soooo happy we finally got to hear this live.
