When you buy tickets 5 months in advance, it's almost surreal when the event is actually about to happen :)

There are also only 4 tickets left on Stubhub. Seems like she did pretty well with Philly this time around.

I guess one of the covers will be Streets Of Philadelphia. I wonder If she'll try again the Bieber mash-up.

Andyland
08-09-2014, 07:47 PM
I hope she doesn't do that one again. It was fine in 2005, but if she has to repeat a cover she's already done in Philly, I hope it's her cover of Neil Young's Philadelphia from the Strange Little Tour.

I'm hoping for non-Philly, non-Bieber covers... a lady can dream, right? ;l

Andyland

Philadelphia Freedom by Elton John seems feasible, though if she wants to go sillier, Boyz II Men or Will Smith could be fun.

That's my all-time favourite Tori cover. It is so beautiful and perfect. I don't keep many boots or live performances on my computer, but of the handful I never, ever delete is that song. *off to listen*

Yeah... no. It didn't work out. If there was time for one more group to be taken in, I would've been in but there just wasn't time before the soundcheck. I got to bond a bit with people in my bit of the line, though, including a very lovely and generous woman who told me I should go ahead of her because she is going to other shows on this tour. It was a sweet gesture and much appreciated even though it didn't work out for any of us. I did get to request Talula, though, as someone was writing down requests for those of us who didn't get to meet her. Still very excited for the show despite the bummer of an afternoon!

Not sure what time she's taking the stage tonight, but I believe the ticket says 7:30 and there definitely is an opening act.

I requested Talula in Kansas City. She told me she had to learn it/rearrange it because it relied so much on other instrumentation. Here's hoping we get it eventually, maybe even tonight. :)

But she does a lot of Elton, so I'm thinking she personally doesn't care for BJ for some reason. Or maybe just she thinks she can't do a good job.

Eh, Beekeeper is ok, and Ophelia is horrid. Otherwise a great set. HIMH -> Cooling -> Weatherman is a wonderful bunch of songs. I think Weatherman has cemented itself as my absolute favorite from UG, based on how happy I am when it turns up on tour. It really stands up so well next to her earlier material, and I still think of it as "sisters" with Baker, Baker.

Beekeeper is one of her best songs, it just sucks live with the organ cause it's too long and she can't play the organ at all. Ophelia is bad on AATS, but when it's performed in a proper way it really shines.

She can play the organ but is really dreary and pulls notes too long. Sweet the Sting I got on Friday for example, she was playing it for all it was worth and with a band it works better.

I listened to the stuttgard version of sweet the sting and i really really liked it. Then I listened to the st paul one and I couldn't stand it. By the way, she plays the organ without the pedals, something that should never be done.

I don't find Ophelia nearly as dreadful as everyone else. The visualette is hilarious but the song itself is pretty inoffensive for me. If I had to get AATS stuff, I'd only want that, Fast Horse, Starling, and Curtain Call. The thing I'm dreading most are the karaoke songs!

Oh that is a cover I can get into. She hasn't done it before I don't think?

She did it in 2005.

Ophelia is an amazing song stuck with horrible production or vocals, it changes.

The show was lovely. Very mellow set and I'm hoping for something more lively in NYC but she was on point. I was next to some very vocal touchy feely boys who seemed to really connect during purple people ;l

Weatherman, man. That holds up with the best. Highlight of the night for me.

quite poor encore. I bet there was something else on the original setlist. She usually plays silent when she ditches the hardest songs.

Oh, and Bliss was a tour de force.

Beekeeper, no. I love the studio version but it just doesn't work live.

Ophelia was Ophelia. But overall a great set. I also could have done without cornflake. I now know what everyone was saying.

Of course, Bieber's songs are the most complex compositions of our century :D

Ribbons swapped for TTTS, Carry cut for time

This was my first show of the tour. I'm grateful that TTTS replaced Ribbons, but I'd love to hear the new version of Carry.

I'd agree that the show was lovely, but the flow was a bit disjointed. Things got somber early, and then would kind of flip back and forth between intense and mellow. I love Toast, so I was pleasantly surprised to hear that so early. Ophelia is not something I'm ever hoping to hear, but she really sells it. Bliss was a highlight for me. With her intensity and the lighting effects, you almost feel like you're watching a band tour for a moment.

Crazy/Wild Horses was really just Crazy with five seconds of Wild Horses at the end. She's Always A Woman was pretty, but not as daring as some of her other Lizard Lounge selections. The Beekeeper still kind of dragged for me, but not as much as 2005. Streets of Philadelphia is a repeat from 2005, but it was on the keyboard/synth this time, and it was nice to end the night on a note of love for the city.

A friend of mine went to the show and said it went downhill after Bliss. He said the energy disappeared and it seemed like she was just playing songs with no emotion behind them. He said everything up to and including Bliss was performed with passion but it went really somber and 'boring' after that.

Ophelia has to be one of my least favorite things she's ever done, but it was very emotional at this show.

Personally, I felt like the show started off mellow and had a weird flow. It felt like the setlist just could not find its groove, but half the setlist was like, dream setlist, so I was pretty happy. Not the Red Baron!!! Spring Haze! Cooling! Here. in my Head! *happy sighs*

Really weird thing: earlier today I was telling my husband that I thought that parts of Only The Good Die Young would make an excellent mash-up with Unrepentant Geraldines, like if the narrator of OTGDY was one of the Unrepentant Geraldines, asking Virginia to come dance with her. But I didn't want to request it because it seems like she never plays Billy Joel. We had a pretty long discussion about it this afternoon. Then she started the LL and said she was going to fuck with our minds, which I guess was for the Crazy/Wild Horses mash-up, but our minds are totally fucked with because of the Billy Joel thing. Ha!

This is pretty much my thoughts as well. Weatherman was a great moment though.

Andyland, well said.
Was my first show of the tour as well & all of the sudden it hit me I was about to see tori as she came on!!! It was as if wasn't truly processing it

Parasol was great! I was in the front row center of first tier right above soundboard
The sound was Amaaaazing!!!!!!

Right before we went in my friend made a Here in my head reference & was so excited for it bc I'm pretty sur I've never or almost never have heard it live

There seemed to a song for all her family my friend pointed out but Tash got dumped for the song I was aching to hear which was good for the setlist bc I it was somber

Took me back to 2011 songs of loss
Bawled my eyes out during carry that year

Toast, Red Barron, & especially Weatherman touched me thinking of those I've list
Toast my cousin who also died in a car crash
Weatherman - a friend recently passed & was newly married with a young child :(

Bliss was badass from the first note!

Datura!!! Spring Haze! Crucify! So much passion

I'm not a huge Billy J fan & agree while it was pretty not so adventurous
Standard.

Cornflake the sound was weird it sounded almost as if backing track kept adjusting up & down & it was sorta stale for a CG

most the crowd was good from what I saw
Into the performance giving energy but for the most part respectfully except for some somber track a lot of whoo hooing which was weird
2 chicks behind talked through the.entire. Show which was annoying but it could've been worse so I just tried to tune them out. So I laughed during SATY at the "you never shut up" part & whispered to my friend the woman behind us don't get this song ;)

Hope folks that went to M&G enjoyed

Sure i will have more thoughts later but this is my late night ramble review

Honestly, this was one of the best Tori shows I've seen. Lady was fucking ON and sounded fabulous. I loved it and was totally mesmerized. I'll write in more detail when I'm not on my phone, but damn. This was just GOOD.

Someone already posted on YouTube!!!

Also forgot to mention Cooling :)
So touching first time I heard brambles live

And Streets was a repeat but I didn't go they year & being from Bruce town,nj loved it especially Rhodes like synth

And Crazy/Wild Horses was overhyped with her "mess with your head" um a couple of lines at the end of crazy was not what I was expecting after that
I was thinking wow what she gonna pull out?!?

More videos are up but need to sleep

Okay, so gathering my thoughts after the show here... Haha. This was my 10th Tori show in all my years of seeing her live and I honestly think it ties with her performance at the Tower Theatre in Upper Darby in '01 as my favorite show. On paper, I would not be thrilled by some of the song choices--"Ophelia" and "The Beekeeper," I'm looking at you!!!--but hearing them live really was a wonderful experience because she was so spot-on and so present.

Parasol -- She banged the shit out of the Bose and I flinched in the best possible way. It was clear that this show was just ON at that point.

Here. In My Head -- This was really intense. I didn't expect a song like that to come so early in the set, so it was a wonderful surprise. Her vocals were spine-tingling!

Crucify -- The best version I've ever seen at one of my shows. She was SO feeling it and it brought back so many memories of listening to that song. Yes, I've been disenchanted with some of her work over the years, but I have never denied the power of that song. She had guts to write it and it will always be a huge piece of her legacy.

Toast -- This was my unexpectedly emotional moment of the evening. I've always thought this was a good song from TBK, but it has never been a favorite. Her performance struck a chord with me last night and made me think about my grandmother who passed away in June of this year. I silent-cried through the whole damn thing.

Ophelia -- I kind of needed a moment to recalibrate after Toast, so this was a surprisingly fine choice for that. I still hate the "Ophelia/I feel ya" bit with a passion, but the live version had a conviction to it that the gross album one doesn't.

Strange -- SO BEAUTIFUL. This is one of the sleeper hits of Scarlet's Walk for me. When that album came out, I was dazzled by songs like Carbon and Another Girl's Paradise, but this one has really crept up on me over the years. She did a cute hand motion after the "blue isn't red/everybody knows this" lines as if to indicate "duh, everybody knows this!" Haha.

Bliss -- Gahhhhhhhhhhh. She played the everloving fuck out of this. There's really no other way to describe it.

Cooling -- I've never gotten to hear this at a show before, so I was so excited -- plus the "brambles" bit was intact!

Weatherman -- This song is among my newer favorites and the performance was flawless. The "one more look" parts are just devastating. It fits right in with her older material, IMO.

Crazy/Wild Horses -- When she was telling us that she'd decided she was going to "fuck with Philly tonight," I had a flashback to that set from the other night with the Bieber cover crossed out and thought, "Oh nooooooooooo." What it turned out to be was a gorgeous version of Crazy with a small snippet of Wild Horses at the end that worked out very well.

Always a Woman -- Not a favorite song of mine, but I know it well from years of my dad playing Billy Joel stuff and Tori's version was infused with great warmth. I was also just happy that it wasn't Landslide because that's usually one of the covers whenever I see her live. Haha.

Purple People -- YES PLEASE. The Choirgirl b-sides really had a chance to shine during this show. I loved her little grin after "breakfast every hour/it could save the world" because that is 100% TRUTH in my book. ;l

Spring Haze -- I actually thought about requesting this, but didn't. It was a thrilled to hear it since it is one of my favorites! She messed up a little and was like, "oh, fuck," but it all worked out. Some lady in way in the back of the theater was straight up shrieking like Daniel Stern when the tarantula fell on his face in Home Alone, though, so I'm a little wary that that will probably live on forever in somebody's recording.

Take to the Sky/Datura -- This was feisty! I really liked the inclusion of the "is there room in my heart..." bit of Datura and it made for a pretty seamless transition back into TTTS.

Not the Red Baron -- Very graceful and contemplative, and it actually made for a very good transition into TBK.

The Beekeeper -- I joked with my partner beforehand that maybe we were safe from this since she just played it elsewhere, but... there it was. This was hands-down the best rendition I've seen. It was maybe 6-8 minutes long and had actual consonants, which is a definite step-up from 12+ minutes and consisting entirely of vowels, which is what it always felt like to me in the past. ;l

Cornflake Girl -- The backing track on this was really not necessary, but I will gladly listen to it while watching her pound those keys like the champion of the world because WOW. That solo never gets old to me.

Silent All These Years -- I kind of needed to hear this one. [post28] Like Crucify, it will always be one of the highlights of her career and is an extraordinarily brave song. She seemed filled with emotion and it was a stunning performance all around.

16 Shades of Blue -- The backing track worked better for this than it did for Cornflake Girl, sarcastic kazoo and all. It's a strong showing from UG and I was happy to hear it.

Streets of Philadelphia -- I heard her play this in 2005 and it was kind of a slog, to be honest. Last night's version was much "tighter" and focused. It was a good send off into the night!

I am so freaking happy for her that she got her shit together again. It's like she snipped away all the bullshit that's been holding her back or making her hide away this past decade and she's free now to do what she wants to do. What a total joy to see and what an inspiration to us all. Everybody heading out to upcoming shows is in for a total treat. [post28] [post28] [post28]
