We're opening all three last the discussions for all three shows at once. Have a great end of tour whoever is attending the Florida shows and good freakouts in here.
Until Australia in November!

As to Clearwater...

Undented also says M&G canceled

Sorry, guys, we’ve gotten word from the tour crew that there will be no M&G in Clearwater tomorrow. We know a lot of you were hoping to wish Tori a happy birthday in person and Tori is very sorry she won’t be able to chat with you on her special day, but the schedule is packed. You’ll just have to send her extra-strong best birthday ESP vibes during the show.

It kind of frightens me how many people are going to take that literally...

I will be there tonight. I can post it here if you want.

I am SOOOO excited.

From one of the Tori FB groups:

Word is this: Per Tori's management: John Witherspoon and Mindi ...we will sing happy birthday to her AFTER the encore when she walks back onstage and when we see the cake. Spread the word. Post on timelines and text friends. Please refrain from singing until then. Thanks guys for helping out.

Awesome! My daughter is just beside herself. We saw another gal with her little girl. It's wonderful to see Toris music be enjoyed by younger girls

And this opening band is lovely!

^ It seems like they're about to eat each other's faces off, right?

Lol yes; it was kind of uncomfortable. I don't know if they felt a little out of place or something, but they did not look super comfortable up there either at the NY shows. I mean, they were fine, but just totally mismatched with the crowd.

I'm not there. Just recalling their awkwardness from the shows I saw. ;)

And Nick, they looked really uncomfortable at every show I saw, too. Hannah Lou has a great voice but it's a little hard to watch the performance...

If you think about those thank you lyrics though, to us as her fans, that's really sweet

If the sun refused to shine, I would still be loving you.
When mountains crumble to the sea, there will still be you and me.

Kind woman, I give you my all, Kind woman, nothing more.

Little drops of rain whisper of the pain, tears of loves lost in the days gone by.
My love is strong, with you there is no wrong,
together we shall go until we die. My, my, my.
An inspiration is what you are to me, inspiration, look... see.

And so today, my world it smiles, your hand in mine, we walk the miles,
Thanks to you it will be done, for you to me are the only one.
Happiness, no more be sad, happiness....I'm glad.
If the sun refused to shine, I would still be loving you.
When mountains crumble to the sea, there will still be you and me.

Oh Jove.

Sweet the Sting needs rhythm to work. Doesn't matter if she gets through bass/drums or just using the piano and some staccato but I don't think that song works at all just as a Hammond number. Needs SOMETHING to keep it from being dire.

Nick
08-23-2014, 02:29 AM
Thank U performance is just okay but I love that she went there. She usually covers songs that - melodically - she could have written herself. This is one of the least Tori sounding things she's ever done, and I kind of love that. (Plus it got me psyched to see Alanis in Portland tomorrow night!!!)

Bullshit, seriously? I don't think we are at the same show.

Some people loved Austin and I found most of the show incredibly conflicting. I've said it a lot this tour, but different strokes. She could be completely on top of her game and someone will love the set as much as the next person hates it.

I LOVE the 2005 version of Apollo's Frock and play that a lot. Tombigbee is an amazing band song and I think the rest is mostly well-written but I do struggle with the EP as a whole. If I disliked those songs I'd be a lot less conflicted by how little I enjoy hearing the actual disc.

Nah, it's cool.

I was just happy to be there. I haven't seen her since 2005. These past 9 years of my life have been so trans-formative. Her music has been there for me. And maybe it wasn't a set list that had all these rare things, but I still thought she sounded and performed amazingly. Liquid Diamonds hit me like a truck to my face.

The crowd was interesting. I know a lot of you would say omg it sucked. But I dunno. She seemed to like the cheering. People were excited. Although there was this one girl. WTF, I think it was during SATY's and she just witch yowled during a really emotional part of the song and the whole audience started laughing.

Eh, for me a lot of it just didn't work. We got Leather as the second song in Orlando 2005 and the third song tonight. That's usually a bad setlist omen for me. Some of the set felt very sleepy and drawn out to me. Even SATY had the "Excuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuse me" and "You foooooooooooooound" parts back. It wasn't as bad as 2005, for example, but it did feel like she'd slowed it back down a bit. Sweet the Sting on the organ is a dronefest, too. I already didn't care for the song and basically we got the 2005 version tonight minus the "sexy sexy sexy" part (thank god). I actually dislike Martha more than STS, so I wasn't thrilled to get that one. It was ably performed but I certainly wouldn't call it a highlight.

Then there's Liquid Diamonds and Voodoo. I love both of those songs, but I think these versions suffered from a lack of structure. In the middle of Liquid Diamonds, during the part where she usually improvises, it's like she either forgot what she was doing or lost her place in the song, because she just started repeating, "Liiiiquiiiiid ruuuunnning..." over and over. It felt like she was trying to find her way back into the song. Voodoo has a similar issue, and it's been this way in most cities, where she'll repeat some of the lines three or four times and it takes me right out the song. "When you're the sweetest cherry, boy... the sweetest cherry, boy... I said, the sweetest cherry, yeah..." WE GET IT. It just feels like she's meandering around. The piano bits were great and her voice was great, but a lot of it just felt like she was making it up as she went along.

I do not want to talk about Raspberry Swirl.

The backing track songs (Trouble's Lament, Cornflake Girl, 16 Shades of Blue) are worse in person than in bootlegs because the backing vocals on the tracks are so loud that they totally drown out Tori. There were parts of 16 Shades that she didn't even sing, she just let the backing track play. If I had to hear TL, I would have rather gotten the awesome solo version she was doing during the album promo. This one feels neutered in comparison. In some parts of 16 Shades, her singing falls out of time with the backing vocal on the track, and then it just sounds like she's struggling to keep up or something. It felt messy to me.

There were gems tonight, though. Seaside was probably worth the price of admission alone. She repeated the "Whose god is this/what god is this?" lines multiple times, maybe 4 - 6 times, getting angrier and louder each time, then she'd fall off to a whisper on the "wish that she had one more day" line. It sounded like she was on the verge of crying for a lot of that song. It was the best version of Seaside I've heard. I don't know how it will translate on video/bootleg but in person it was gorgeous.

I thought she nailed the notes in the Bliss chorus tonight, unlike some of the earlier shows in the tour where she didn't sound like she was quite hitting the notes. It was a really energetic performance and the light show was great. It was my second favorite after Seaside. Siren, SATY, and Selkie were pretty standard but beautiful. Fearlessness didn't grab me at first, but then in the middle she opened and slammed the fallboard on the piano and then started playing loud, rumbling low notes on the piano in the bridge. She hiked her leg up and really got into the playing. Think the bridge of Marianne. It was the one time tonight where she just let loose and played the hell out of the piano. That redeemed the song for me.

Thank You was beautiful, and Thank U was fun even if not perfect. I think the best part was the audience reaction, and also being able to text Jake to tell him that she'd finally done an Alanis cover. ;) I was so happy to get PGY (I got it on organ and piano in Clearwater 2005) if only to avoid ending the night on that song which shall not be named. It was also the only time I felt like I might get emotional, and I don't know why, I guess because I'd just watched her surprised reaction to the cake and balloons, and her celebration with Tash and the crew, and then summing all that up with the fact that it'd been a "pretty good year." I managed not to be weepy but I did feel something in my eye for a minute.

Now, for the most annoying part of the show: whoever you are, screamer from the back right side of the theater, go fuck yourself. During SATY they stood up and screamed the lyrics "What if I'm a mermaid in these jeans of his with her name still on it," shouting over Tori. Then in the moments leading up to the chorus of Siren, in the little pause before "Never was one...", the same person shouted "BOOM!" They did this again, I think in Voodoo. They would do this every time they knew she was about to reach an intense part of the song, but it really sucked the energy out of it and it was obvious that Tori heard them because a few times you could tell by her singing and playing that she was trying to drown them out. Ugh, assholes everywhere.

So yeah, there were strong moments, but I feel they were punctuated by a lot of moments I didn't really care for. Hopefully tomorrow will be better, but I am predicting Ophelia, Maybe California, and Ribbons.

That setlist does seem pretty fucking weak on paper, especially compared to the previous ones. Still, I'd have shat myself over Fearlessness (I missed the NOH tour).

Weak??? Fearlessness, Liquid Diamonds, Bliss, Siren... I would eat this show up! Even Sweet the Sting seems like it would be interesting on this tour.

That's exactly how Austin felt for me, and why even though the setlist looked amazing on paper it felt brutal to witness.

Aww, "Thank U" is admittedly not one of my Alanis favorites, but I like this cover. Knowing that she chose to play it on her birthday brings a little tear to my eye. [post28]

I think it is difficult for Tori to remember the exact song structure and lyrics to some of her songs since she has so many (and menopause lol). She also does not have the band or quartet this time to help provide structure and bring energy - she has to do it all on her own this time. Tori mentioned in interviews that the thought of touring alone at 50 really made her anxious. Tash had to convince her to go rock on her own (Tori was having doubts, knowing she might screw up songs / lack energy (e.g. Beekeeper tour).

I think these repeating of lines you mention is sometimes where she looses place, but instead of getting anxious, she just improvises, repeats, adds new energy to parts or just has fun with it. I think that is the most important thing for her this tour - she is taking it all in and having fun with the tour - she is present. I think she really enjoyed the NOH tour as well but that was more structured with the quartet. She is playing so many songs from her catalogue (and fun covers that are unexpected) and just going for it without trying to be the perfectionist she always is - adding backing tracks and things to add energy where she feels she needs it. It seems she put a lot of effort into the studio album this time around, but for the tour she is more relaxed. I rather like it.

That being said, she better drop those fucking karaoke backing tracks for the next tour!

Yeah I also think sometimes she repeats the lines to build up her vocals too

I also notice her adding extra bits of piano too in some songs which I think was a modification she made with the quartet so she could catch her breath & she's taken it on.

She's way more authentic & present this tour so overall I'm thrilled

Apparently she replaced the Rhodes sample she's been using for LD and brought back the strings synth she was using in 2009. :(

Yikes, that Thank U cover did not work for me. I'm usually not that bothered by the drum loops, but that one doesn't fit the song, and the chorus was way too shrill. Maybe I'm just too familiar with the original, but that's among my least favorite covers so far. Glad she did something by Alanis though.

A fitting analogy:

Reminds me of when I saw Fiona Apple on the "Anything We Want" tour. I went to the final show and some woman kept shouting FEE.OH.NAAAHHH!!! from the balcony and then there were more calls out from the audience such as "Whoa" and "OH YEAH." Fiona began walking around the stage with her index finger on her lips indicating to people to take the sound down a notch and be more respectful during the performances. A couple of minutes after that, Fiona said something that I think really resonated with many of those in attendance who weren't entirely drunk. She said: "Look guys, I am not going on tour again for a really really long time so if you want to talk, that's fine, but please do it outside because I have my job to do." Big round of applause for that. Then a bit later she said she wanted to allude to what she'd said earlier so she blurted out something like "How would you like it if you felt you were just about to come and then I walked into your bedroom and vomited on you?"

I don't care how good a set looks or how fantastic her performances are: these kind of animals ruin a song for the listener. Sorry you didn't get a better show Ryan. :(

I was at the show and the setlist was very hit or miss imo. She played and sounded wonderful for the most part but if you don't want to hear a certain song sometimes it doesn't matter how good she is, you're just gonna not be feelin' it. Even though many fans don't want to hear songs like SATY and Leather, the audiences go nuts for those songs so she plays them for a reason.

Pros: Loved the new melody for Parasol, Fearlessness was crazy good. She started playing the piano like a fucking demon half way through. I was like holy shit. Siren, Bliss, Selkie were all great. Seaside was very powerful. I saw her in Clearwater in 2005 and she played Seaside then too. Thank U was very touching and the audience loved it. It really is one of Alanis' best songs. I like how she said she was gonna play covers of people who were "good eggs". Leather and Mr. Zebra were cute.

Cons: Sweet the Sting just sounded so out of place. Didn't like it. 16 Shades of Blue sounded like she just hit play on the record. The backing track was so loud. Raspberry Swirl's beat wasn't bad, it was very Studio 54 cheese, but it was a bit too camp for my tastes. In The Springtime of His Voodoo was a bit messy but the bridge part was very good. Trouble's Lament isn't a bad song at all but I just zone out when I hear it.

Overall, she sounded great and seemed to be in a really good mood. Nice to see Tash in the flesh. She's very tall. Tori still has horrible taste in fashion though ;l

I think that some of the versions of her clothes this tour are great, classy yet not frumpy. This green one not so much though.

Yeah. I dunno who thought the robes look good. It's so much fabric it looks silly
The sheer black one she wore in LA & NYC is decent

The black robe looks really great, but it's still so long. She was basically tripping over it, getting it stuck under the legs of the piano bench. Like, girl, you can get a tailor.

Obviously, the lady loves her robes. She's been wearing versions of them for over a decade. I think she likes their theatricality. It's not everyday clothes, yet they're probably comfortable to play in.

Can't say I agree. I think they're quite lovely and I love the colors/color combos. They're really rather swanky uniforms IMO. She looked amazing at all four shows I saw.

I feel the same thing with the constant repetition of línes in several songs. It looks that she has lost track for a minute, although sometimes it is not the case It started with this new version of Iieee and it has continued on other songs this tour.
Seaside is not a favourite of mine but this version is gorgeous.

i love the way the robes look, but i would have liked it better if they were just tied at the waist and nothing hanging down. she rocks the leather pants, has a killer pair of legs. show them off!

I really like the black one and the blue one with the black leather pants she wore in Vancouver and New York night 1. Not overly keen on the rest.

Can fearlessness be heard somewhere? I´ve always wanted to hear it solo. Its a song I really like, especially the bridge.

Seriously.
That is my daughters song. She wanted to go to the meet and greet (it was cancelled) and request it. The second she started singing we both jumped and clapped our hands over our mouths. Sat there the whole song with her in my lap cuddling. That whole concert was worth it for Diamonds, Fearlessness, and Seaside. It was lovely.

I just got around to listening to the boot, and wow, that Fearlessness is amazing. And this is the best Seaside I've heard. I love that song, and this version is fierce.
