I will seriously burn every last Tori Amos cd I own if they're setting up for a guitar a la DDI-Caton-era only to be a T & Mac Aladdin double cheese fest.

There's a Korg and another piano (so 4 keyboards on stage). I suspect it could be for an opening act even though I don't see one listed.

When I saw this tracklist I knew there'd be "beats" and cheap keyboard samples all over it. I predict the whole summer tour will be this way.

God, find some young, energetic drum and bass players and just go out there and have fun. The loops/samples are really, really embarrassing. Almost as embarrassing as the 2007 clown wigs.

Honestly, the synths don't bother me that much. Maybe they should. But I feel like if that's the worst thing she's doing these days, its just not that bad.

I Feel Love is the first time I've really hated a backup loop. I agree with you about everything else, in fact I think the cheap synths and loops have a DIY charm to them. I LOVE Code Red, and I even like Raspberry Swirl (though I think her voice should have crazy reverb & echo effects on it... Think Beekeeper tour meets Grimes?!)

The Cruel/Sangria/Geraldines is weird, I listened to the first performance and I'm not sure if I like it yet.

InvisibleBK
06-07-2015, 06:44 PM
Yeah...the Raspberry Swirl I saw in NYC was fairly awful but it had more to do with the fact that there were clear technical issues and it sounded dry. Honestly, I think she does it to give herself a break and keep herself on tempo when she gets tired. Also to give the set some variety. I think there are places its very effective - LOVED the synth on her cover of Smalltown Boy, for example.

I loved the synth loops at the Vancouver show with her cover of Rio and on Riot Poof. The audience in general seemed to dig both as well. They weren't too bad in Brisbane on Fast Horse, at least in person. I know that wasn't a loved performance online but I liked it in person. I don't mind the synth loops at times, I think they've worked on songs such as Riot Poof, General Joy and a few of the covers. Usually when they don't work it's because the BPM is too slow for the song she's performing, Talula for example.

eresos

I dunno about DIY charm of the loops
I've seen so many others do so much more live & it just comes off as dated or amateur sounding to me
But they're not all awful & I can see how she would like to mix it up when she's doing such a long solo set but she doesn't HAVE to but I think she enjoys the interaction be the music, herself, & the audience so she gives us more bc she gets so much out of it

Having said that some of the performances she gave just solo (like creep) had so much more potency & power than most the songs with backing tracks

Aesthetically, it's probably the last direction I'd have wanted to see her go in. I don't find cheap synths charming or effective and I can't think of a single song of hers I'd rather hear on the Yamaha or with loops than solo on the piano or using a more refined-sounding electric keyboard. I get why it probably doesn't bother people the way it bothers me, but I absolutely loathe it. It was one of the biggest detractors at one of the shows I saw last year and if she keeps heading in that direction, I am less inclined to want to see her live in the future honestly. Different strokes and all.

She's a piano player. She's not Grimes. The loops are just quick backup like you would use in a home bedroom session, that's why I like them. I imagine if Tori Amos was a new artist in 2015, she's sound kind of like this. Dated & amateur is pretty much what DIY is so in that case aren't they successful?

betterthanfine
06-08-2015, 08:04 AM
Yes, but she's not new on the scene. She's an established artist with a large fanbase who has always had enough talent and stage presence to be cativating without the use of musical crutches like this.

soignee
06-08-2015, 10:49 AM
The synths bother me in the sense that she doesn't use them to full effect, but rather just "press play". I've seen artists loop and cut synths alongside live instruments, and it works. Clean Bandit, Disclosure, Grimes, Years & Years... even old school bands like Pet Shop Boys, Erasure and Depeche Mode. I mean, how cool would it be for Tori to utilise the Böse for ring slaps and percussion and loop it ala KT Tunstall (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zq8hiZPqj_U) and Ed (sorry, sorry) Sheeran (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DV0TJZ7Kp40)- actually, you know I'd kill to see that. Imagine what something like Spark or Take To They Sky could be.

David Guetta-esque/ Swedish House Mafia "bands" where it's essentially "I press play and wave my hands a bit" you notice that's all that's going on too, but I think the audience doesn't possibly thanks to the drugs.

Also, singing along to a backup track (hello multiple live Cornflake Girl performances) works if you're active on stage, but not sitting by a piano. You notice it more that way.

soignee
06-08-2015, 11:08 AM
Ah, it always comes back to that doesn't it? I mean, we got The Light Princess and orchestra tours from her trying something new and working with new people, but. circles and circles, gotta stop spinning.

Andreas
06-08-2015, 12:52 PM
Yeah, I haven't seen the backbeats live yet (will tonight though) but they don't really bother me that much. Some are good, some are unnecessary, some are bad. For me, they don't detract from the fact that Tori herself seems to be in a really good place musically. She's not 35 anymore, I totally get it if she wants to give herself a few breaks during a long solo set. In '05 a lot of people thought her energy flagged lived, and that was 10 years ago. I'm sure playing a solo set is even more taxing today.

I would also think she's established enough and wealthy enough to hire a programmer to program those loops and shit, like she had Andy Gray do. These sound so amateurish, it's almost embarrassing for an artist of her caliber. I've got to be honest, even though I can't sit through the vids, I don't think I minded it as much during the actual show. Except that Raspberry Swirl one.

Just watched the video of Girl. She sounds just great. Also! The audience is absolutely silent, just letting her play, taking it all in, and erupting into applause when she's finished. None of this blood-curdling, attention-whoring screaming after every line. Good on you, Danes.

After saying that Spark live is not (and never will be, in my opinion) amazing like the studio one, I find this performance pretty solid. And she wasn't losing time, and I really liked it. Girl and Liquid Diamonds are amazing.

She still sounds sick to me, she struggles a bit with the higher range (it's less dynamic and she sings slower to control her voice, it's very evident at the beginning of Liquid Diamonds), but the lower range sounds awesome. It's like she's got a cold or something.

This is so obvious but I realized that the reason I can be so picky about Tori live is because... I know these songs inside and out!! Every little mistake is glaring. But I also think Tori should change her songs more, to fit her abilities now. For example, if the "don't, don't really mean it" parts of Spark are too difficult, just change it to "but you...(piano line)...don't really mean it". It would sound more fluid that way.

In her defense, she changes her songs quite often. Still, not often enough it seems. She wants to get all those "iconic" moments... But if you can't nail it, why bother?

Faust
06-09-2015, 12:47 AM
There were a couple of times in 2007 where she would sing the harmonizing, lower vocal for the "don't really mean it" and it worked way better. One thing that's always driven me nuts about Spark live is that she insists on trying to match the studio version vocals by singing the high note on "you thought that YOU WERE the bomb" and it almost always falls flat. Not only that, but she does it both times the line comes up, which to me ruins the dynanicism of that part of the song. She does something similar with Raspberry Swirl live. In 1998, she did the Spark bridge vocals entirely differently and went for low notes and I found that really effective. Not as dynamic as the album version, but still a totally convincing and powerful delivery. I like that approach to live singing and arrangements.

Oh my goodness, that Mother Revolution is hands down the best she's ever performed that song, and I'd go far as to say one of her strongest recent live performances.
I love how she is rehabilitating Beekeeper material one song after another... Parasol reborn in the last tour, sounding like a Pele b-side, now this...

The piano playing on Mother Revolution is EVERYTHING.

I Feel Love is terrible :S. The best part of the song is the AATS chorus (I really like the vocal line here, it sounded so strong), and it's way far from perfect.
And in this case I'm in the group "Tori WTF are you doing with these loops".

I have never loved Mother Revolution. I just liked it. Now I am obsessed with it. That was a brilliant performance! She is singing with such passion - the piano is truly "playing her" as she says in interviews. I can't stop watching this!

I didn't hate this, I like to see her experiment with different styles. And she wasn't off-key either.
