It's her fisrt show ever in Spain, so i guess she'll go with a safe setlist.

Primavera sound will be streaming online at concert.arte.tv/fr - artists and schedule apparently coming soon. Hopefully Tori will be broadcast!

Very excited to see this show, along with all the other amazing artists playing Primavera Friday/Saturday like Patti Smith, Sleater-Kinney, Strand of Oaks, Torres, etc. I think since this is both Tori's first time playing in Spain and a festival set, it'll be almost all "hits"/LE/UTP but there's always at least one or two rarities or left-field choices thrown in for solo shows. (See: Upside Down/Secret Spell/Roosterspur Bridge at Bonnaroo 2010 or Apollo's Frock/Barons of Suburbia at Dranouter 2008)

I'm betting Toast will close the set. It's predictable but so is performing Playboy Mommy in Birmingham or Black Dove in Texas and those always happen. The Past the Mission video was shot in Spain, so I could see that coming out too.

Tori has a one hour slot, from 8:30-9:30 PM.

She's coming. I can feel her energy approaching the peninsula. Will it be a return to billowy sleeves? Will there be glasses? Backing tracks? New face?

I think it might be smart for Tori to do a good cover or two at these festival shows. Something like Radiohead's Creep that she did on the UG tour. It appears to be regarded quite highly on YouTube...

Venus_Envy
05-28-2015, 03:43 PM
I'm guessing standard festival set - Orange Knickers, Silent All These Years, Concertina, Beauty of Speed, Virginia, Leather, Precious Things. Add in Past The Mission, Toast and PGY as per the above.

I wonder if she'd do MAAG just because it's Spain's first show? I think Turkey and South Africa's recent-ish first shows got that one.

Do you guys think she will open with Parasol? I kinda think not, but I could see it happening.

In terms of local references, a few thoughts come to mind:

-Barcelona is a city full of all that amazing Gaudi architecture... I have to think she use that and be inspired by that somehow...
-Spanish Inquisition --> Religious Persecution - (Crucify? God? Strong Black Vine?)
-Matters of Patriarchy --> Dictator Rule - (Pancake? Muhammed My Friend? Icicle? Vicar's Wife? Past the Mission seems a shoe in.)
-Catalan independence (Take To The Sky? Alamo?)
-Bulls/bull fighting/the running of the bulls (though against the law in Barcelona, there are still bull ring stadiums and other cultural cues) (Goodbye Pisces?)
-Columbus is quite celebrated in Spain for bringing riches to his mother country. (America? Amber Waves? Virginia? Wampum Prayer?)
-I definitely think she will play Winter since she has referenced the story of Tash and Mark in Spain triggering a new meaning of that song a hundred times, AND it's a classic.
-Hot Spanish people !everywhere you look! (Sweet the Sting?!)

(I realize some of these are quite a stretch, both in terms of the probability she will play them, and/or the association I'm making between song and theme.)

Question: why Pretty Good Year? I am not aware of any Spanish influence to that song. Do tell!

halo eighteen

^
I was wondering that, too. Maybe a "bright sandy beach" since Barcelona is right on the water but that's definitely a stretch. Opening with Parasol would make sense if this is an extension of the UG tour, but I'm kinda hoping for something a bit more random/unique this summer. Not that last year's tour wasn't varied, by any means.

I love her outfit too, Bliss is fierce. Can't imagine how intimidating it must feel to step out alone on that huge stage, in daylight, with thousands of people talking through your songs and staring at you. I admire her so much for still doing that and wonder if she's still nervous. Hopefully some more recordings will pop up. I'm very curious about RS an CR. I get why she might choose these songs in a festival setting but how will they come across solo.

Andreas
05-31-2015, 11:37 AM
I think Bliss sounds fine.

Bloody Grace
05-31-2015, 11:57 AM
Imho she had a cold, because the lower range sounds perfectly fine. Actually I think that, besides when she needs to breathe fast or when she goes high, her voice sounds great (hence the cold assumption).

Btw, the crowd chatting in the background make it sounds like she was performing at the fish market.

Yessica
05-31-2015, 12:56 PM
i`m happy she finally played in my home country, but this was an embarasing first concert. her voice, as we all see, sounds not so good, plus she used the backing track on almost half the songs. it is as if a drag queen has come to sing Tori amos karaoke. it makes me sad.

Bloody Grace
05-31-2015, 01:28 PM
Wasn't only Cornflake Girl performed with a backing track?

Calamitas
05-31-2015, 01:55 PM
Judging from the videos, I don't think she sounded that bad (especially the lower range). I also immediately thought she was nervous, because it reminded me a little bit of the Conan-performance last year (in my opinion, that performance was a lot worse than the clips of this concert). A cold or just a bad-voice-day makes also sense, because I really don't think her vocals could have deteriorated that much since November.

I like that weird little setlist and hope someone recorded Waitress and Code Red.

Yessica
05-31-2015, 02:01 PM
No, many songs had backing – cruel/ss/urg mash up, raspberry swirl, waitress and code red. It really sounded cheap!

Octopussy
05-31-2015, 02:02 PM
She NEVER sounds good at these one-off festival shows anymore. Dranouter, Bonaroo come to mind. I'm guessing she doesn't rehearse as much as she would for a full length tour.

Wasn't only Cornflake Girl performed with a backing track?

Not backing tracks exactly, but she frequently uses the keyboard for a lot of drum loops/beats like on In Your Room and RS. I assume Cruel would have had that, too and possibly Code Red? I really can't picture that one solo and hope a recording surfaces!

Bloody Grace
05-31-2015, 02:10 PM

@Octopussy actually I loved Bonnaroo 2010! But yeah festivals aren't exactly where she shines.

No, many songs had backing – cruel/ss/urg mash up, raspberry swirl, waitress and code red. It really sounded cheap!

Drum loops aren't backing tracks. Granted they weren't all amazing, but they were fairly prevalent on the well-regarded recent U.S. tour.

No, they are not loops, not in the sense of imogene heap or howie day. They are backing tracks programmed by Mack aladin, and they sound very cheap, they are basically karaoke. The tour might have been well regarded, but i don`t hear about one person who enjoyed those backing tracks. anyway, i think she should`ve played solo (w/o backing tracks) and also rehearsed. her voice sounded horrible.

All in all, I don't regret not dropping everything and going, but I wouldn't have hated that setlist. Fingers crossed for a Madrid date, and now I must go back to studying for my finals.

Other than In Your Room, I don't know too many instances where people were happy for them or felt the songs benefitted from it though. That was one of the biggest detractors from the tour and I honestly felt the European leg seemed more put-together.

I can imagine she thinks she needs some more oomph at a festival show, to hold the attention. But why can't she just hire a few musicians to provide that? Some strings maybe for a few songs...

I think she should tour as an acoustic trio, like, piano drums and bass or cello. The solo tours are always a bit boring for me, and the whole band setup takes its toll on her voice and playing.

Now this topic has been done to death over the years but would botoxing have an effect on ones singing? I mean not being able to express your facial muscles properly? I noticed on the 14 tour her forehead moved and she seemed to be able to express fully but in these clips from stage and that interview her eyebrows stay where they are the entire time.

Bloody Grace

I think her TMJ and the fact that she has to chew a gum while she sings to keep her throat/mouth moist are more likely factors than botox. And again, she sounds like she had a light cold. I don't think the stillness of her eyebrows can affect her singing.

I love that section of Unrepentant Geraldines; the version here sounds like a love child of Crucify and Siren. Such a shame that the album version, while listenable, is neutered so badly by the production. The raw material is there for a truly classic Tori track.

Code Red could sound much better without the loop. It was a nice surprise, but I don't know if it's a good choice for a festival.

Imho the point is that those loops slow down the songs a lot instead of giving them rhythm! In itself they aren't bad but the bpm is wrong :/ A proper drum track would do better.

Btw the people talking in the background is still fucking annoying and rude.

That crossed my mind too when I watched this video some time ago. At 2.55-3.15 she makes these little yells and sighs in a way she didn't when she was younger, in order to make her singing more expressive, I guess

DESTROY THE BACKING TRACKS WTF TORI WHYYYYY DO YOU DO THIS. I was of course extremely excited for this show, and I was really really enjoying it until those atrocious loops came out. For real it took about 5 seconds for all the energy and anticipation to be sucked right out of that amphitheatre for me, which is pretty ironic given that I suspect she chose to rely so heavily on the tracks to play to a big outdoor festival crowd. Unfortunately in the context of lots of really great, contemporary-sounding stuff her cheap MILFY flavored drum loops came off pretty awkward and, well, insulting haha. People were looking at each other with the "uhhh okay" face. I would have much rather heard Oysters instead of Raspberry Swirl and that mess of a "mash-up". I dunno. I truly left that show feeling like it was probably the worst music of the entire weekend for me.

Other things: She looked like Tori Amos! I was happy to see the glasses are still onboard and there wasn't an insane wig. Her top was straight up Bea Arthur. She was so, so happy playing, though, and it was enjoyable to see her having so much fun. I felt happy for her. I think she mentioned her manager and thanked him for making that show happen, and as soon as she ran off stage she jumped into a big hug with some guy (presumably said manager?) There was good energy, but no thanks to the music, imo. For a brief moment I was several meters from Mac Aladdin. How do such short people have a tall kid?

Yup, that Code Red was fucking weak, but for me it's all about arrangement. There's more cheese in those synths and loops than in Mac's guitar playing.

The mash-up was weird and I don't really get it. I liked the piano and the Unrepentant Geraldines part though.

ETA: WTF WHY on that synth in Waitress!?

Kala
06-01-2015, 12:12 AM
I wish she would toss the synths and just play the fucking piano. And I'm sorry, but those backing tracks just cheapen the sound. I want no gadgets to be used in her performances. SHE IS BETTER THAN THAT.

ETA: WTF WHY on that synth in Waitress!?

Because it has become like a crutch for some of the songs. :(

I feel like if she went with a unifying sound through a specific secondary keyboard, be that an organ, harpsichord or whatever, it might be okay. Obviously in past tours those keyboards also served the purpose of lending the current album's sound to the entire set, but on recent tours, that's gone away in favor of a catch-all synth library and of course, now the loops. I don't think they add or help her legacy any and I know much people loved the NA leg of the 2014 tour, but for me, they were a huge bleak stain on the entire thing and I am grateful they were entirely absent at the Kansas City show I saw.

Agree about backing tracks
It's like karaoke

The mashups I am also not a big fan
It's just kinda more trying to be an entertainer > artist

The synths I think are easier for her to sing over & she's wants to go it alone but can't quite fill the space as easily on her own for a full gig anymore

Having said that I still feel that she's continuing to be more authentically herself and using more of her true talents live these past few tours. Also live that she's trying new arrangements out

She doesn't even have a new album out and already played Europe last year so these gigs are bonus
Maybe she wants to go shoe shopping ;)

The last album was Tori singing over cheap drums. Specifically Promise and the title track. Matty needs to come back, at least for the albums. Or a real drummer either way.

As much as I love Matt, I wish she'd work with new people. New band, new arrangers, new producers. My main problem with every album since TBK have been production issues (with the exception of AATS and MWG, which just shouldn't exist).

Well, that has nothing to do with the musicians and every thing to do with tori/mark/marcel. I've got to admit, I was really tired of the TA Band, but after hearing the canned instrumentation on UG, I'd gladly welcome back Matt and Jon.

It devestates me that as happy as I am that Tori seems more on track with her work, I cannot get behind the direction she's taken the live show in the past couple of years. Loop tracks, weak medleys and forced keyboard arrangements are so utterly beneath her. Half of this set uses loops. Half. Even Waitress, which is fairly well-performed, switches over to synthesizer for no necessary or beneficial reason; comparing it to the 1994 live track from Past the Mission/UTP reissue would seem unfair if it were a comparison of vocal performance, but the arrangement itself is what makes the later performance sound so much worse. And using that keyboard for Toast just sounds criminal. :(

I think the other keyboard is just a prop to connect with the other side of the audience and do the "look! two keyboards at once!"/*switch* thing. Clearly its musical quality is unimportant, as she is choosing these horrible tones and cheap preset loops.

I absolutely LOVE this version. Have to be honest, never really liked the song much before, or even bothered to understand what she was saying in half the lyrics :D
Also, that Waitress rocks, partly because of Tori's extremely effective use of the synths everyone's moaning about. Listen to the audience reaction when she switches to the keyboard.
