But I have to wonder what this will mean for the 3DS.

That console ist not for me, I am just not a handheld gamer. I might buy the console though, if the price is right and if there are some killer games ready for the launch window.

Curious about the specs, though. They cannot really afford to have graphics of an Wii U level.

Spikey

Don't know. Wii U has really suffered in that it is a true gaming console instead of a PC with DualShock controllers on the one hand, and on the other that Nintendo was basically developing a tablet alongside Apple. The efficient - but alien - make up of hardware and dev kit combination can make the thing do stuff way beyond what you would expect; like Bayonetta II, Xenoblade Chronicles X or probably the new Zelda. If they can realise that kind of stuff as portable, i'm probably already satisfied. I do expect the Switch to have more raw power, to make it easier to develop games for.

Oh and Nintendo; there better be;

- Super Mario 3D world/land follow up
- Zelda
- Mario Kart
- Splatoon
- Metroid
- F-zero
- Star Fox

on launch. Regards, the world.

Games
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a launch title, I believe a first in Nintendo history.

Nope, the Twilight Princess: Wii version was a launch title for the Wii.
Which means they did it again, delay a Zelda game so far in time it spanned a generation of consoles. =/.

What Nintendo IP promises for the first year;
Zelda Breath of the Wild on launch
1,2 Switch - March 2017
Mario Kart 8 - some upgraded thing - April 2017
Splatoon 2 - Q2 or Q3 2017
Fire Emblem Warriors - Q4
Super Mario Odyssee - Q4

No Kirby, no Pikmin, no Metroid, no F-Zero, no (new) Mario Kart just yet. Xenoblade likely only for Japan this year. Aside from Smash Bros Melee being playable via Gamecube virtual console, rumors are strong that Smash Bros WiiU/3DS is also going to get a port, with 2 new characters added to the roster.

The Zelda game is sure to make the launch at least a minor success, I hope it won't anger the fanbase too much.
Otherwise, it is clear they observed the minor financial successes of the Wii U & 3DS, and expanded upon it as cheap as possible;
- Mario Kart 8 re-release
- Splatoon gets an entirely new installment, which makes me very, very, very happy! Hopefully local multiplayer will be added.
- Fire Emblem Warriors I assume to be a combination of Dynasty Warriors and Fire Emblem; obviously a cheap cash-in they are trying to achieve, like they did with Hyrule Warriors. It was effective then, but since Fire Emblem isn't even action-adventure to begin with (100% turn-based strategy), I doubt if it will work as good. Of course, Fire Emblem has a HUGE 3DS fanbase, but I'd rather have seen a proper console Fire Emblem release, we haven't had one since the GameCube.

Other stuff seemingly coming to the Switch in 2017;
Ultimate Street Fighter II: the Final Challengers
Super Bomberman R (perhaps even on launch)
Sonic Mania
Some sort fo other Sonic project
Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

D'oh, I seem to have completely blocked Twilight Princess out of my memory :(

I'm super excited about Dragon Quest X (finally) and XI, but I didn't even consider the possibility of those being Japan only. At least they're doing away with region locking, but that doesn't help with RPGs that are heavy on text/voice acting.

Assume though that there will still be seperate USA and EU versions of games, text heavy EU localisation takes soooooooo looooooong usually because of the multi-language thing (english, french, german, italian and spanish).

I got a pre-order in at Best Buy. Gamestop's bundles are absurd, I hate them.

Wish I could get Breath of the Wild Master Edition (that Master Sword amiibo looks awesome), but it's already sold out everywhere. Damn scalpers. The new trailer was amazing. I can't wait to freaking play this game and hope it lives up to the hype.

I'm excited. I didn't think the presentation was all that great, but the system has awesome potential. Mario Odyssey looked like a freakin Pixar movie come to life

I wish they had talked about the virtual console and if/how any old games would port over. There were so many rumors about Gamecube games coming, but nothing panned out. Perhaps to be announced later?

Hmm, not totally blown away. This might be the first time I won't get the Nintendo console on launch day...
I was expecting them to come in guns blazing with more new games from their best loved IPs. Where's metroid, pikmin, kirby or even freaking Pokemon.
Zelda looks nice and all but I want to read reviews / see gameplay first. All Zelda's that came after the wind waker I did like, but not really loved. And Skyward Sword was actually pretty boring at times, especially the whole overworldy flying bits.

However, that Mario Odyssee footage? YES!

Spikey
01-13-2017, 05:44 PM
Skyward Sword, am replaying that one right now, but I don't really like / care for the WiiMotion Plus thing. Like, really don't.

About motion sensor stuff... so much has been confirmed already that I can't keep track.
Has it been confirmed that the Switch unit itself has an infrared bar built in to keep track of motions of the Joy-Cons?

The most important motion-related Nintendo IP, Wii Fit, is also missing on the release year so far. Though I guess they would have to rename it as Switch Fit. Which sounds kinda ridiculous but yeah.

I wish they had talked about the virtual console and if/how any old games would port over. There were so many rumors about Gamecube games coming, but nothing panned out. Perhaps to be announced later?

Hm Eurogamer reported that Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion and Smash Bros Melee were tested and working on Gamecube VC, but doesn't really name its sources other than being "multiple". All other other sites point to them; however, they've been right before about the Switch.

Oh man, yes!!!

There will be no "second-screen" mode, btw; it is a single screen experience. Kind of odd, considering the DS and WiiU type of game.

This is what surprised me too! I figured the Switch was going to distill all the good features and innovations of their past consoles in one machine and make them more futureproof. There's bits of the Wii motion controls in there with separate joypads for the left and right hand, which can be used for all kinds of (asymmetrical) multiplayer gameplay, so why not the second screen option that the Wii U just never got to develop and expand upon because nobody was buying the damn thing... Seems like a missed opportunity.

Also, speaking of those: people expect their consoles to do much more than just play games these days, they're becoming full fledged home entertainment systems... So where's the apps like youtube & netflix? Can you livestream and share?

And I still think the line up of games announced so far is very very inadequate. People still have a sour taste in their mouths from the horrible lack of titles for the Wii U and they really needed to fix that image. So. What do you get? Zelda now, with a re-release of a few Wii U titles given a second chance and a mario game at christmas. Not very guns blazin', is it?

Spikey
01-19-2017, 10:18 PM
There is Netflix and Youtube on WiiU, it is just not promoted that much. My first Netflix encounter was over WiiU, and these days group Youtube for me is through WiiU (gamepad is used to search for next vid while current vid is playing).

Even though Switch seems up to par with LAST GEN (ps4 / xbox 360), it is thus automatically lacking next gen.

Worst thing. I can handle an asanine Mario tilt game for iPhone, but tonight a full fledged Fire Emblem was announced for iPhone and Android. Im a fan, Id love playing a new FE on my phone while waiting for a bus to show up, the problem here is that no FE has been announced for Switch. Wtf😣 Is Nintendo trying to undermine its own hardware business ok.

So following up from last year's #Pokemon20 spot, apparently Nintendo bought an ad for Zelda: Breath of the Wild to run during the Super Bowl this weekend. Hopefully that won't end up being an awful waste of money for them haha.

So far I've pre-ordered Breath of the Wild, Super Bomberman R, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Super Mario Odyssey. Really thinking about 1-2 Switch, but it doesn't seem like something I'll play often - my boyfriend rarely plays games with me, and we almost never have people over. I'm also on the fence on if I even want the pro controller. I'll probably just wait to see how the joy-con grip feels.

As much as I love Zelda, the most annoying thing about it is that there is no in-game device to store recipes as far as I know, not even the bases. I fixed this by trying to write everything down (without the effects), and sorting them as practical as possible.

So here is my compact but complete guide to cooking dishes, elixirs and tonics in Breath of the Wild

Spoilers ahead.

The resulting dish will depend heavily on what kind of types you combine. The types are Meat, Seafood, Mushrooms, Vegetables, Fruits and "Other". Almost all ingredients add either to base recovery of HP or duration of (any) effect, or both.

What special effects the dish may provide depends on what specific kinds of Mushrooms, Vegetables, Fruits and Seafood you use for a base recipe, or on top of it.
You can stack effective ingredients to make it more effective, but attempting to combine different effects will negate all. They are Hearty (increase HP that can't be recovered), Chilly (Heat-resistant), Spicy (Cold-resistant), Electro (Shock-resistant), Hasty (Movement), Mighty (Attack), Energizing (recover stamina), Enduring (increase Stamina that can't be recovered), Tough (Defense) and Sneaky (stealth).

There is no Fireproof effect for cooking food, this is an effect exclusive to elixirs, as only the Fireproof Lizard and the Smothering Butterfly give it.
There is no Vegetable with an energizing effect.
There is no Seafood with an enduring or hasty effect.
There is no Fruit with energizing, enduring, tough or sneaky effects.
Spicy Pepper and Fleet-Lotus Seeds are counted as Fruits, not Vegetable.
Carrots and Pumpkins count as Vegetables, but often work to make unique dishes.
Hylian Shroom, Hyrule Herb, Apple, Wildberry, Palm Fruit, Hyrule Bass and Sanke Carp have no special effects aside from recovery and added duration (unlike everything else of their type), but importantly still count as their respective type for the end result.
Meat never has special effects (so only recovery and duration here).
Sometimes Fish, Snails and Crabs have the same influence on the end result as type, hoever, sometimes they have a unique effect as "subtypes"
Sometimes Salmons, Trouts, Basses, Carps, Sankes, Porgy have the same effect as subtype "fish", sometimes one or more have an unique effect.
Dishes that require Snails in particular actually really need the Hearty Blueshell Snail. I suspect this to be a glitch that may be patched with an update.

The "Other" category is actually a large category of different "types" of food that have no special effects at all, but are strangely often the deciding factor in what a dish will be. You can typically recognise them because you can't photograph them for your compendium. Don't go cooking without them! They are Tabantha Wheat, Cane Sugar, Goat Butter, Goron Spice, Hylian Rice, Rock Salt, Fresh Milk, Bird Egg, Monster Extract and Courser Bee Honey. Oh, and Nuts too, though they aren't that crucial to cooking, more useful for Elixirs. Courser Bee Honey actually DOES have an effect as energizing. Monster Extract has a random effect on duration or recovery, either positive or negative.

I found it extremely practical to group the dishes by similarity, to quickly scan for options whenever you have certain combinations of those precious "Other" ingredients. Then, experiment by adding effective stuff (not listed here if it isn't needed for the base). The only thing you need to keep in mind when adding effects to these bases is really that you do not contradict the effects of certain specific ingredients essential to the recipe that already have an effect; mostly when Pumpkins, Carrots, Honey or specific Seafood is required.

The latter part is great if they get a Virtual Console up and running. I'd have used my WiiU a lot more had I native access to its eShop and VC catalog.

I'm pretty confident they won't localize it, I just think it's a majorly missed opportunity to give NA a classic property that's been repeatedly asked for. Oh well. Lots of great, actual new stuff coming out too. Hoping I get a chance at the Switch in this next year.

The latter part is great if they get a Virtual Console up and running.

They will. This week, Nintendo has been targetting ROM sites heavily to protect their IP (good for them; they still care about it / kill the pirates!). They mostly took down stuff that is up on VCs on 3DS and WiiU, with everything Mario, Kirby, Metroid, Donkey Kong or Pokémon in official itle, but also petty unofficial IPS patches. On top of that, idiotic IP titles like "Balloon Kid (GB)" and "Mario is Missing (SNES)" no one even buys. This must be foreboding a Switch virtual console for sure. They left Tetris (GB) completely alone, probably because of copyright issues between them and Alexey Paijitnov.

Faust

Yeah, they don't have Tetris at all anymore, though I do luckily own the digital GB copy on my 3DS (I mean, and both the Japanese and English carts but...).

Yeah, they don't have Tetris at all anymore, though I do luckily own the digital GB copy on my 3DS (I mean, and both the Japanese and English carts but...).

I have the original EU cart of Tetris GB, which contains the worldwide 1.1 version. The original Japanese v1.0 cart I think is lacking the iconic "Type A" music.
Other nice options for Tetris I think are the NES edition (also lacking "Type A"), the DS one, and Super Tetris 3 for the SNES.
That horrid 3DS one though....

Yeah mine is the original too. Have two Tetris and two original GB, that was one of the best multiplayer options for certain. My original Gameboy is a literal scrapheap, but the second we bought back then is in pristine condition. It is a Play it Loud! High Tech Transparent.

Spikey
06-16-2017, 08:32 AM
Btw, I now only play with backlights ever since I bought a AGS101 gba model. GB I now play exclusively by injecting the roms into the official virtual console on my 3dsXL with my own pallettes. Reminds me, here are some GB pallettes I created for the "green swap" option; the one Nintendo created I think is fugly as hell. It will always remain an approximation of course, as the original Gameboy didn't display in RGB; there was an actual hardware switch that could increase or decrease the contrast...

Has anyone picked up Splatoon 2? I was a huge fan of the original, but I'm on a major budget squeeze for the rest of the summer. I'm wondering what ya'll think of the new edition.

(I really hope they expand the Splatoon world into other genres as well... How great would a 3ds Splatoon platforming game be? I think the ink swimming mechanic could translate really well to that old style 16-bit platform and make for some fun gameplay.)

quick review spoilered for size;

It is glorious, if you liked the first one, you should DEFINITELY enjoy this one. Since Mario Kart 8 and Zelda: BotW are also available on WiiU, Splatoon 2 is currently THE reason to own a Switch. I haven't played Arms yet though. The only downside I've found so far is that I'm really used to the dual screen of WiiU; you'll miss the map and easy superjumps with a touch, because now you'll have to pull up a map by pressing X. Otherwise, it has the same mechanics, the returning array of weapons are all of the shooters, blasters, gals, rollers, long-rangers, splatlings, sloshers, inkbrushes... two new types are dualies, which are basically a pair of uzis which also grant you agile dodging moves; another new type of weapon is a splat brella. This is sort of a cross between a shooter and sloshers, but it also forms giant umbrellas to act as a launchable shield. 0_o. Have only seen this in storymode for now though. Specials and supers changed a lot; there are a lot of new ones; like a jetpack and a giant cloud of rain made of paint.

Online 8player matches

Mostly the same as the first part; this is the main game, very brief matches that hook you up with 7 other players worldwide on one of the two maps currently in rotation; it puts you in a random team of 4 to face off against the other 4. Teams are shuffled each round. The most important "mode" is still Turf War, with the objective of covering as much of the map as possible in your team's colour of paint. You can go for the most kills, but that won't get you on top of the list in this mode; it may win your team the game, but the person who turfed the most ink will be the best player. Also, this is purely for FUN. No rankings, no consequences, just addiciton. Other than that your level raises more rapidly with a win. You can also join people online in your friendlist for this, but you never know on which team you'll end up. It is possible to host a private battle this way.
Reaching Level 5 will allow you to enter into Ranked Battle, which has a lot of changes in the way you raise ranks. The matching and levels work much the same way. Still no Turf War here, but the three other modes return. In Splatzones you have to turf and defend a small area against the other team, in Tower Control you'll have to control a moving tower to a certain point and in Rain Maker you'll have to carry a big and heavy weapon to a certain point; these modes rotate much the same way as the stages in two hour blocks. You'll start as a "C-" in rank, and as you are winning more than losing, you'll grow. This is pretty hardcore, but what is entirely new here is that for each of the three modes your ranks have been seperated. An entirely new mode is called League Battle, available once you break into B- rank on one of the Ranked Battle modes (I got to B- in less than four hours on Rain Maker). This allows for even more hardcore ranked matches playing with either 1 partner or 3 partners in fixed co-operation.
Of course, Nintendo will host semi-global events in the Turf War sphere named Splatfests; this was done with the original only the first 12 months, so this would be a reason to buy the game RIGHT NOW instead of waiting (also, while the online service i still free); in Splatfests, other modes close, and you'll have to pick a idiosyncratic side to face of against the other side; ("Cats" versus "Dogs", "Zombies" versus "Ghosts", etc.).

Online 4player co-op

"Salmon Run", available on set hours, is a new mode; it lets you hook up with either 3 other randoms, or you can join one or more friends. With this team of 4 though, you have to work together towards the same goal. You are dropped on an island, which is soon invaded by a variety of enemies. They start out small and samey, but get real diverse and big towards the end. You'll have to try and kill them as quickly as possible and collect the eggs they drop. You can't select a weapon for Salmon Run; instead you play three rounds with the same team, and the weapons get switched around. It is really fun! I expect this to become available permanently soon. This is a good and friendly way to learn to work with the different types of weapons (quite forgiving in that regard).

1-Player Storymode

Still very much secondary to the main games of online play, but it has seen VAST improvements. Remember Callie and Marie? Well, they are removed entirely from the main game (replaced by Pearl and Marina), and their story now plays out here. Well, Marie's story at least, as Callie is nowhere to be found, probably resulting from the final Splatfest of Splatoon 1, where Team Marie beat Team Callie (which means Splatoon lore is directly influenced by the players [which is pretty cool]). The level design and boss design is pretty much like the original, HOWEVER, this time around you will be given a WIDE array of weapons! In Splatoon 1, Storymode would only be playable with a roller or long range charger if you had two of the Amiibo, which is kind of unfair. This is no longer the case! A regular shooter is complemented with a rolller, a long range weapon, a charger splatling, a blaster, a brella, dualies, a slosher.... as you go along. A really a nice way to get to know these weapons without bothering real life players online. Also, turn off the gyroscopic controls and you'll have a near-perfect handheld game; some weapons won't play as smoothly this way though (like the sloshers imho)

Local Play / LAN Party

This I haven't played yet; you can do Turf War as well as Salmon Run locally with other people having both a Switch AND a copy of Splatoon 2. There is no option for split screen.

OMG Unf is in on the Splatoon hype, this calls for a bonafide Unf Squad. Two more people in time for "Mayo versus Ketchup" Splatfast early August. Many people online are saying "Why mayo versus ketchup? Where do they compete?" I'm sure someone in Japan visited Holland or Belgium and came up with the idea, okay. What are you guys going to vote for, as we won't be able to play together in that global mess if we are not on the same team? I'm more of a Ketchup person, but adore Mayonaise (Lite with mustard added) at times. I wonder if the paint colors will actually adopt blood and sperm like colors. 0_o. ANYSPLATS My friend code is SW-4161-2129-8915, my handle is "Windows'95".

Robert, if he doesn't buy it for you I totally will.

By the by, "Salmon Run" is way more complex than I thought at first. Because;

- You can actually die if all people are splatted by those evil salmons; I think I got lucky with good teams the first few times I played it
- the weapons rotated are a shooter, a ranged charger, a trislosher and a roller. The shooter is obviously the best, you may feel really challenged with any of the other weapons at points
- the tide sometimes kills you
- No one game is the same. I've had games where a sudden fog settled in, and others where it was dark and we were overrun by zillions of tiny salmon, //rushing at us from the sea ftw?
- The bonusses unlock exclusive gear, food tickets and other stuff
- It has it's own ranking system (!)
- Salmon Run sometimes isn't open for more than a day.... when you see encounter it open, be sure to play a few rounds

Spikey: do you play with motion controls? "Everybody" says you should so you can aim more steady, but I find it quite tricky to get the sensitivity right while moving.

Depends on the weapon for me. Nothing is quicker than the gyroscope while aiming with with shooters and sloshers, but playing with rollers and inkbrushes I may at times prefer manual. Only thing I can recommend is playing to 1-player mode, that seems really designed for teaching people the variety of weapons and controls. People are really divided on it, save for those with motion sickness; they cannot handle the gyroscopic nausea. Myself though, I get cramps in my hands though after playing too long with manual dual c-stick controls....
It does take a lot of practice; I've been playing Splatoon 1 since May 2015 on WiiU and eventually enjoyed that hardcore S+ rank, so I wouldn't actually remember how someone new struggles with getting used to controls.

Okay, there's a few things that do annoy me. I fear some of it is simply Nintendo being stubborn with online play, but maybe I'm missing a feature?

- you can't switch weapons ingame or even between games. Why!! If you get put in a team with 4 or no rollers, that kinda sucks... If you want some variety, you have to exit, equip, enter and hope you get some diversity.
- the way players are divided amongst teams is off. I just had a game against 4 15+ levels with wicked outfits, and we had 2 lvl 6 players. Surely it must be balanced while dividing the teams?
- so I have 8 people in my friendlist, 4 were playing splatoon. It's impossible to join their teams or games! you can't send out an invite, or cue up for their game at all. Maybe I'm spoiled with how the Xbox handles things but what's the use of a friendslist if the game doesn't give you proper options to team up with them...

(I won't even mention the lack of a headset instead of a silly app)

- Turf War is completely random; that means weapons and levels aren't evened out based on global stats. You'll get more cash and exp though if you beat a higher levelled team (I think). Teams are shuffled each round though, so it matters even less. This isn't an issue in ranked, there, it is mostly balanced. Weird though that you can't switch weapons between matches in Turf War... I mean, what does it matter if matching isn't balanced and teams are shuffled anyway.
- In-game, you'll strangely see people online, regardless of what they are playing. For example, I saw you with a status "online" in Splat2 tonight while you were actually playing MK8. =/. Don't know why Ninty did stuff like that, they must be crazy.
- Have no problem joining friends who are currently playing Turf War myself; was probably playing Splat when you saw me online, however, I was playing Ranked, which probably means right now you can't join me while I'm playing THAT (ranked = solo). Strange though that you can't even send me a message or invite me to join a vanilla Turf War. Hit me up on Facebook if you see me online and want to play with me specifically =/.

Anyone downloaded the Nintendo Online Switch app? It is some pretty nice features for Spla2n; you can view the results of your last 50 battles here, but more importantly you can order gear here from a special shop, which you can then buy/pick up in-game from Murch. It doesn't sound that important, but the big difference is that these clothes get updated with every 2-hour rotation, and there are a lot of 4-slot ones among them.

You are correct. I double checked just now and it does show SR as being open. Ehh, I think they could've studied Overwatch a bit more. They've got a very clean interface and clear communication. Ninty is seriously behind on this stiff, which baffles me as there surely are enough people available with the knowledge. They could've made it a much smoother experience with a few adjustments, so I hope a patch can fix that.

So true. I'm excited for whatever they have planned for us! Ranked. I'm addicted. Almost broke into S-rank with Tower Control today, but then the very final three matches it all went to hell and fell back to "Ok" A+. This game isn't good for my heart and nerves ;l. Currently A- on Splat Zones and B- on Rain Maker, but haven't really played either of those extensively yet. I detest areas with two seperate Splat Zones to control, like Moray Towers; especially because I feel vulnerable to long-rangers with my Gal .96 or Trislosher. A-rank is what I expected though - a total chaotic warzones with people applying all the nasty tricks on you ever.

Also, when you get higher on Salmon Run, man, that can be really tough, too. Last run there was a Splatling and a long ranger in rotation, but those weapons I can't with.

So far I'm really enjoying all of this. There is a Splatfast next weekend - at least in Europe!

Yeah, the Switch has a LONG way to go, in my opinion. It needs a broader library and a virtual console. Aside from Mario Kart and maybe Splatoon 2 and Arms (both of which I have yet to play), it's still basically a $300 Zelda game for me.

I spent € 485,- on it, for the console, 2 extra controllers (which I may not need because Mario+Rabbids turns out to be a 1-2 player game, which is also disappointing) and that 1-2 Switch game (because Wii Play was a lot of fun and I figured this would be similar). What was the main reason for buying then? The most important system exclusives for this year will probabaly be all Nintendo IP: Arms, Splatoon, Mario Odyssee and Xenoblade.
The top 3 reasons the Switch sold so well up until now are likely
1. Zelda: Breath of the Wild
2. Mario Kart 8
.....
3. Splatoon 2
If you like Nintendo IP in general, this should be a good year.

Mario + Rabbids

Super Mario Odyssee
Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Splatoon 2

Nintendo exclusives available on Switch in 2017;

Fire Emblem Warriors
Mario Kart 8

Nintendo exclusives developed by others available on Switch in 2017;
Azure Striker GunVolt: Striker Pack
Blaster Master Zero
Monster Hunter XX
Mighty Gunvolt Burst

System exclusives developed by others I think are very interesting;
Pokken Tournament DX
Resident Evil: Revelations Collection
Super Bomberman R
Ultimate Street Fighter II

System exclusives in development by Nintendo;

Tried Mario+Rabbids tonight. Thought it was lame.

Really? Ah, too bad. I personally love it, chasing perfect scores and getting all challenges. Animations are funny and zany and there's quite a bit of depth to the strategic gameplay.
Perfect X-com meets Mario game if you ask me :)

It reminds me of Codename: STEAM. While I don't enjoy that one as much as Fire Emblem, I think I'll enjoy Rabbids very much! Only played a little bit so far though. In general am addicted to turn-based stuff while on the go, so this should be perfect for that.

Of course Mario+Rabidds is nothing like the other Mario games. It is a tactical game like Xcom. Maybe you should have read an article or two beforehand? ;)

I watched a few trailers. The game seemed like it would be fun.

What was the main reason for buying then?

I wanted to get it as soon as I saw the trailer for Mario+Rabbids. I didn't get the impression at all that it would be an Xcom game. Plus I was hoping there would be some kind of backwards compatibility, at least for the Wii U games I bought digitally. But there was none at all. Perhaps it's not *usual*, but when I went from Wii to Wii U I was still able to use all my old games, I could even transfer the games I bought digitally. So it's really a let down that the Nintendo Switch doesn't offer any kind of backwards compatibility, or at least acknowledges that you've already purchased certain games on other Nintendo platforms and offers a discount on the Nintendo Switch version, or something.

Yeah I guess many expect that kind of backwards compatibility from Nintendo, as it has existed for a longtime with them now. This is somewhat more complicated than it may seem at first, as the base is not emulation but hardware included; a Wii U contains an actual Wii, the Wii contains an actual GameCube, the DS contains an actual GBA... interestingly, the WiiU also has the GameCube hardware, it just doesn't have a disc drive that can accept 3"DVDs.

Not so with the Switch of course, due to the portability and the lacking of a disc drive it doesnt have any different hardware modes.

So it's really a let down that the Nintendo Switch doesn't offer any kind of backwards compatibility, or at least acknowledges that you've already purchased certain games on other Nintendo platforms and offers a discount on the Nintendo Switch version, or something.

The discount was only offered for virtual console stuff I think, where the actual content wasn't modified or upgraded.
Things like Mario Kart 8 and Gunvolt are ports or upgraded ports, for which some work needs to be done to make it happen. They won't discount that because they are Nintendo Beeches.
Also, the virtual console stuff is cringeworthy. They don't release enough (looking at the SNES library for 3DS here) and the crossplatform discount is way too low. For ports I want to pay, for EXACTLY the same ROM I don't.

I dunno, I'm still pretty thrilled with the Switch, but the Wii U (and even the Wii once the novelty wore off, honestly) was basically a huge disappointment.

6 months in I own 10 physical games (Zelda, MK8, Splatoon2, M+R, Arms, Disgaea 5, Bomberman R, Cave Story+, Binding of Isaac & 1-2-Switch) and a few more digital (I am Setsuna, Blaster Master Zero). I plan on getting Sonic Mania and Double Dragon 4 real soon as well. This console has definitely gotten its money worth for me in a staggeringly short amount of time and I'm super hopeful that this thing can be everything it promises to be.

https://www.polygon.com/2017/9/13/16305038/nintendo-switch-arcade-archives-mario-bros

Nintendo (via Hamster) is bringing an Arcade Classics line to the Switch eshop! This isn't quite the Virtual Console announcement I was waiting for, but just as cool in its own right! Mario Bros. has a street date of September 27, with Punch-Out!! and VS. versions of Balloon Fight, Clu Clu Land, Ice Climber, Pinball, and Super Mario Bros. to follow. No price info yet, but I'm assuming it'll be comparable to the NeoGeo games Hamster has already been putting out, if not higher. It's too bad they won't all be on a collection on a physical cart, but I guess there's more money to be made this way.

I hope Donkey Kong will follow suit, with its original missing level finally restored. Also hope that non-Nintendo arcade games can possibly come down the line, like Contra/Super Contra... A boy can dream.

Oh yeah, Doom and Wolfenstein announced. There's a demo for Project Octopath Traveler. Increased production for SNES Classic, NES Classics being made available again next year. Nintendo is on fire haha!

Yesterday's Direct was very awesome.

Have you played POT yet? I downloaded the demo but haven't launched it. I am SHOCKED that we are getting the new Wolfenstein... and the Arcade Classics are exciting as well! Hopefully we get a REAL VC announcement soon, but until it launches this is a nice tide-over.

On a personal note: I have had Has Been Heroes since it was released (like a week or two after the Switch was launched, I think) and I've sunk dozens of hours into it but only beaten it once. This week I've now beaten it a few additional times, finally. Every time you beat the game it unlocks additional 'locations' that give out more and better spells/items, better Heroes, and a LOT more money/candles which makes the game infinitely easier. I'm glad I persevered through it. The game is still hard, but it is easier every time you beat it.

HBH is tough. Be prepared for a game that punishes every mistake with death. But it's rewarding once you figure out the strategies.

I am really excited for POT after having read that it's by the same Devs who created the Bravely Default series. I LOVED those games, so charming and clever. I've long been hoping that we'd get a Bravely game for Switch, but I'll settle for this.

Also, there's some 15 (!) new Switch games on the eShop today, including a perfect replica of the arcade Mario Bros. that might not be completely worth $7.99, but man is that a fun trip down memory lane hah. Also despite the lack of touchscreen functions, I do plan on getting Picross S as well, as I'm thirsty for some new picross puzzles after recently completing the Pokemon and Zelda ones on 3DS.

I've yet to even start Samus Returns and that's making me one sad - and embarrassed - panda. Too many games!!

Yeah, that's my only real major complaint with this game vs. the older GB Mario ones, or even the Pokemon 3DS one; there's no real goals to strive for and no penalty for screwing up. I'm well into the 15x15 puzzles and finally finding a pretty substantial challenge. I'm not using the hint roulette but I am leaving the blue hints turned on. I'm surprisingly enjoying the Mega Picross puzzles much more than the standard ones. I just wish they were all unique puzzles...

It's taking me about 5-8 minutes per puzzle, and the "just one more" every time I finish one has been sapping away pretty much ALL of my free time at night haha.

Stardew Valley and Golf Story are definitely on my radar. I still have to get Sonic Mania, too.

Tiny Barbarian DX is a tough little platformer. The checkpoints have been very generous throughout the whole game though, which has made it pretty manageable for the most part. There's been blatant nods to classic games like Donkey Kong and Castlevania. It's really been just a joy to play through, despite the high difficulty.

I'm totally stuck on the final boss though. Even after watching a perfect playthrough on YouTube, I'm not sure I can pull it off...

I think Mario Odyssey has to be the pinnacle of gaming. I’m astounded at how good it is. I’m a much bigger Zelda fan than Mario fan, so it’s hard for me to say that Mario Odyssey is beating BOTW for pure gaming fun at the moment. I love how nothing is serious but everything is immersive. It’s a testament to Nintendo that they can create these immersive worlds without relying on visuals alone. I feel like I’m playing in a Pixar movie.

Also, The end of New Donk City? The final boss battle/end levels?

It really is a night and day difference from Breath of the Wild, where I was dying pretty much every couple minutes lol.

That being said, I'm a little embarrassed to admit that I have died more than a few times in my short time with Odyssey so far. I'm still quite clunky at 3D platforming. I've learned absolutely nothing in the ~20 years since SM64!

Xenoblade isn't turnbased; it is more oddly autofunctional in realtime, with some realtime active components. Wouldn't have guessed you wouldn't like turn-based btw, considering how much you liked Mario/Rabbits; is that perhaps because it is grid-map based?

Ha, yes, I think that's the biggest part of it... Mario/Rabbids is turnbased but more about managing the field and finding/exploiting weak spots with the right characters than building up ultra-summonings or a zillion random encounters where all you do is select an action from a row of options. Grosly simplified of course ;)
I also loved the old star wars KOTOR games, and Mass Effect, so that kind of turn based I'm A-okay with!

I finally beat The Darker Side of the Moon last night after probably 50 tries. I immediately went back to see if I could do it again and well, practice makes perfect. It was SO hard at the start, though. I felt like throwing my controller quite a few times.

I still have to skip the lava stage with the forks you have to fling yourself from and hit with Cappy before you land and die. I guess it would be much easier with the “homing” motion control but I’ve been playing handheld with the controllers attached. It makes getting through that stage almost impossible, so I just shake the system violently while I’m gliding with the dragon guy in order to skip it and make it to the other side.

One thing I loved about the last level is how they make you think you need to beat the huge cap right at the start to get another heart. Nope. If you quit wasting your time there and just go on about your business, you just get another heart at the pyramid, which made having to start over a million times less frustrating because it’s too tedious to take down the Goomba cap every single time.

Wow, what a fantastic celebration of everything that made BotW amazing. You can tell the developers can’t help but keep coming up with new ideas for shrines and divine beasts. It makes me really happy to hear they’ve already begun development on the follow-up.

The final divine beast is the best of the game.... and the final battle... I did NOT see that coming. I thought it would be another Ganon fight!

Has anyone else finished the DLC yet?

^Yassss.

I'm pretty proud of myself for making it through that last beast without any assistance. I had to look up solutions for the four other ones in the game :/

I really have to give BotW a ton of credit for single-handedly renewing my interest in gaming. Taking the ~160+ hours invested into that game into consideration, I've likely gamed more this year than the last 5 combined. So while it's sad to see that story coming to a definitive conclusion, I'm extremely satisfied with the game as a whole. I'm not sure if I want to try out Master Mode - I mean I still haven't even been able to get good enough to finish the Master Sword trials!

I got a shit ton of e-shop gift cards for Xmas, so I'm looking at what to get (probably FINALLY Sonic Mania) - there's many games on sale right now so I suggest checking that out. Oxenfree is only $4.99, so I jumped at that.

VS. Super Mario Bros. is out and will completely change how you feel about that game if you've never played the arcade version. Power-ups and enemies have been shifted around compared to the NES game, and several levels are changed around as well to make it much more difficult. They even subbed in a few "Lost Levels" from the then-new SMB2 in Japan just to be assholes. Good luck.

Looks kinda ridic to me actually. Maybe the first Switch mistake. Either this is genius OR we'll be making fun of Ninty for decades.

Switch had mostly successes so far. The only thing I don't think was that succesful was 1 2 Switch; I don't actually know anyone who got that game. It seemed like a pathetic attempt at replicating the Wii Sports experience. They should have slapped a Nintendoland or Mario Party theme on that one.
Oh and from a branding perspective I really think Fire Emblem Warriors was a mistake.

I think this will be a HUGE hit with kids.
Lego is extremely popular, toys that combine with games as well (hello Skylander) and this seems to fit in that area and even adds a little education to the game, not to mention the option to decorate it.
Parents will LOVE giving this to their children. Even if the prices are a bit steep, it seems like a very 'responsible' gift instead of just another video game.
