my first of 3 shows this tour. My Tori experience of RAH is that she will either play it completely safe or rip it up. So I think we're either going to get Leather, SATY, COMT, Teen Spirit, BQ/Horses and Ribbons Undone or it's going to be the b-side extravaganza.

Excited. The fact I will hear Reindeer King live is enough to get me excited. [post28]

Also I haven't seen her in three and a half years so I am READY.

Sugar and Hey Jupiter were debuted on the last tour at the hall and we got incredible versions of Rattlesnakes and Pancake.

I'm truly devastated I can't go to this show.

RAH was much earlier on last tour than it was this time, but given the 2 day gap between shows, we could be in for some surprises

Super good seats in the stalls now available through RAH website - guess they've had returns, maybe from the members who have seats reserved for every show I think?

And i still have my spare ticket in the stalls near the stage (see the selling thread for exactlty where!) cost me £68 but i'll sell for £50, i'm going to the show so can meet up there if anyone is interested in it :)

I'd normally be doing all 3 UK shows, haven't missed a UK show since the mid 90s, but life has changed now (in a good way!) so can't get to glasgow! First time i'll be sat on my own at shows too, that'll feel weird - i have a feeling i'll cry through the 2 concerts, apologies if you're sat next next to me! ;)

Just landed in London. Suzanne Vega tonight and then Tori - pumped for this show! Berlin blew my socks off and I can't wait for what she does here and back in Seattle.

[post28] Just back. Was gorgeous. Songs I feel I've heard a thousand times took on new life. It was a stunning version of Little Earthquakes in particular, and COMT had a new zest and speed. She was present. River was also stunning. Wasn't crazy about the long ASF as closer but it was fine and was lovely to hear isolated backing vocals. She looked amazing in her red and black outfit.

10-04-2017, 11:26 PM
I was there tonight as well. I was a LITTLE disappointed that there were seven repeats from the Berlin show, even though I know she hasn't been changing the sets up as much this tour, but I was happy with the new songs. Josephine into Russia was a particular highlight for me. I gotta say though, even though she was friendly when she told her cute story about playing London in '91 with Neil in the audience it seemed like she was in a strange mood, like she wanted to get off the stage in a little bit of a hurry (probably so she could see Tash?) - it was less than a minute between Bliss ending and the encore beginning. The couple of lines from Mary's Eyes and then the "Make mother well" moment from Horses made me wonder if she was particularly worried about her Mom tonight, or maybe just emotional from seeing Tash. She powered through the songs without much pause and there seemed to be much less jamming in the ones she played in Berlin. Also, before the Fake Muse section she said she wanted to honour some great women who weren't there anymore, so it was weird when she did Stevie and Joni, who are both quite alive, but who knows. Silverspring did have me wiping a few tears away. She also started River off with a few bars of Jingle Bells, which I know is in the melody of River, but she sang it in a much more pronounced way than in Joni's version.

menju56
10-04-2017, 11:37 PM
I agree about the speed Andy and I felt that too. It felt like she was racing sometimes and was rushing to be off; I noticed it especially with how quickly she signalled ASF to start. But the performances themselves were strong. The bit of Mary's Eyes in Pancake was a lovely surprise, and for the first time I made the "hymns for her" connection when she played Ruby too.

Beelust
10-05-2017, 12:40 AM
Sorry that it seemed rushed... but yeah - it was probably so she could have the most time with Tash after the show. Tori must get homesick (even though she is with husband and she loves her crew) - she must miss Tash and her mother/extended family particularly right now.

drbunnig
10-05-2017, 07:15 AM
Great show last night. "Little Earthquakes" and "Bliss" were highlights, both particularly intense.

I too feel something was a little off. I didn't get the feeling she was rushing, but it seemed like her pacing and breathing wasn't quite on point and she missed a word here and there, or struggled to fit them all in. Maybe that's just how she's performing this tour (I have heard no recordings, pretty much avoided everything to do with any shows prior) but it didn't seem quite right to me.

WesternLad
10-05-2017, 08:00 AM
Yeah, she rushed through most of the concert I went to. I think she has a tendency to do that a lot when she's solo but it's a bit frustrating sometimes. I just want to say 'relax woman, catch your breath now and then!'

Suedehead
10-05-2017, 12:25 PM
I was there last night. You guys - the show was incredible. My 11th Tori show and maybe it's a hyperbole at the moment but definitely one of my Top 3 Tori gigs ever. Bliss was just too much for me.

andy
10-05-2017, 12:45 PM
Don't get me wrong, it was a great show! I was just in Berlin though where she played seven of those songs though and I don't think any of the versions last night compared to the previous show. Still, people are saying Berlin has been the highlight of the tour so far so I suppose she can't better herself every single night. Bliss was definitely a highlight of the evening both times though.

Pop review: Tori Amos at the Royal Albert Hall

The first thing to strike the casual observer of this concert by the Baltimore-raised, Cornwall-dwelling singer was the intensity of her relationship with the audience. Tori Amos has been carving out a quirky space for herself since the late 1980s, using her classical training and arresting mezzo-soprano voice to tackle everything from religious doubt to sexual desire in a style not so dissimilar to that of Kate Bush or Björk. And at the Royal Albert Hall she gave her people what they wanted.

She played the favourites. She turned from her piano to glare maniacally at the crowd, as if they had done something terribly wrong. She dropped her voice from a wail to a whisper. She slammed down the lid of her piano. And for this she was rewarded with wild cheers, standing ovations and professions of love. With Amos playing up to the role of eccentric genius, it was a masterclass in crowd-pleasing. And if you weren’t a fully paid-up fan, it was hard to see what all the fuss was about.

Performing solo on piano and keyboards, sometimes at the same time, Amos relied on backing tracks to build the atmosphere for the opener, iieee, never the most satisfying approach. Better was the classic Little Earthquakes, a song about miscommunication that benefited from a sophisticated piano accompaniment, while a mid-section of cover versions, including Joni Mitchell’s River and Tom Petty’s Free Fallin’, served to show how strong Amos’s voice is, but also how those songs are masterpieces, while too many of her own, in particular Pancake and the just released Reindeer King, took a single idea and repeated it until it was time to finish.

Yet when she played an encore of Precious Things, an impassioned, complex treatise on female insecurity and objectification, the febrile audience response made sense.

I was there last night with a friend who is a casual fan. We saw Ryan Adams at the RAH a couple of weeks ago and though he's a big fan of him he thought last night was better. Iieee was slightly off but from LE on she was in total command. Ruby was my personal highlight - I've not heard it live before and it has such power in this incarnation. The Silver Springs/Free Fallin' mashup was incredible, as was Pancake with Ohio. I also adored the extended, more complex version of A Sorta Fairytale. Props to Tori for a great show.

Thanks for posting that Times review. Now wish I hadn’t read it. I can critisize Tor for a lot of reasons but not that her songs often revolve around a single idea that is repeated too many times.

;l Little Earthquakes is about "miscommunication"? Okay. Can they stop sending straight dudes to review Tori shows please. ;l

Oh but I think it partly is. The little earthquakes are the silly misunderstandings we have with people that then rip us into pieces. I have always looked at it this way, amongst other interpretations.

Sure but that's an....EXTREMELY BROAD interpretation of that song.

True, but I guess in a short concert review he’s not going to list off all the other things he thinks the song might be about. ;)

I've had a bit more time to think about this show and process it... I do agree that it felt a bit rushed, sometimes it felt she was racing, just something about the energy. But it was weirder because it wasn't like she was rushing because she didn't want to be there - she felt very present, she said "do you know how much I love you guys?!" - just very quick in parts. Not a criticism as such, just an observation. The only thing I wasn't totally sold on was the transitions between the piano and the synths in some songs; some were great, some felt like it killed the momentum she had been building because the transition wasn't quite there. And it felt like there was a missing piece between Precious Things and ASF somehow.

But with all that said, it was a fabulous concert. Her playing was incredible, and her voice is in fine form. It was a stunning version of Little Earthquakes, and Cloud On My Tongue was beautiful too. Songs she has played for 25+ years did not sound tired. She was engaging with them. Pancake was [post28] She didn't do any long "girl" in Precious Things, a very quick "girl" and then into the thunderous piano which the crowd lapped up. SATY got a massive cheer. As did iieee. The lady in front of me whooped loudly at Russia and said "oh yes" after those low bass notes.

Reindeer King... the way she was caressing the keys, how she was playing it, the effortlessness... it really felt like that song is a part of her, and has been for years. Just gorgeous.

I'm sorry but is that Times review really slating Pancake and Reindeer King?!

I loved this show! In the 20 times I've seen Tori over 23 years it was definitely one of the best. As others have said Bliss was tremendous. Little Earthquakes and Josephine were also highlights for me.

The little story about playing at the birthday party was funny and charming.

I didn't take a proper camera as I didn't know how strict they'd be on the doors but snuck a couple of quick shots with my phone.

The idea that those songs only have one idea in them is pretty dumb. Clearly the reviewer had only ever listened to LE.

Thank you. The first time I heard this Bliss on periscope, I was blown away, now not so. Rough vocals.
Found another review. Am I missing something or are reviewers simply copying each other? Review in The Upcoming (http://www.theupcoming.co.uk/2017/10/05/tori-amos-at-royal-albert-hall-live-review/): "However, she is most recognised for her simplistic ballad style, and it was a mesmerising and commendable performance from one of alternative pop music’s legends." Mesemerinsing and commendable and legends is good, but simplistic?

I think they just mean simple as in piano and vocal only.
