Owen Pallett (http://www.myspace.com/owenpallettmusic). He plays the violin. He's got some albums of his own. He's worked with other people. He puts on a good show. Here's a thread for him.

http://torontoist.com/attachments/toronto_david/pallett_latest.jpg

I've only discovered him in the past year, and enjoy his first couple of albums and EPs. I'm absolutely in love with "Heartland". I got to see him play twice recently, and his show was amazing. I'm so impressed with the fullness of sound he can get out of layering the violin.

Here he is covering Mariah Carey's "Fantasy":

And Bloc Party's "This Modern Love":

Heartland is easily my Album of the Year for 2010 so far. I love him so much and I am so excited to see him in October when he opens for The National! For me, Heartland has three to five incredible masterpieces, and some also-rans, but overall I'm a huge fan of his use of ochestra and his violin arrangements. I know he's married to his manager, but I really want to lock he and Rufus Wainwright in a room together with a piano and a violin and see what happens. They're both really virtuosic songwriters.

This may be the definitive live performance that I've seen, er, ever:

The best live show I've seen this year, the best non-triple album of the year thus far.

I filmed this in Barcelona, at the Primavera Sound festival:

I just read the following here (http://onethirtybpm.com/news/owen-pallett-to-play-last-shows-as-a-solo-act-at-sxsw/):

Owen Pallett announced during a set at Austin’s Flamingo Cantina that his performances at SXSW would be the last as a solo act. Pallett noted that he was working with a drummer and that he is really excited for people to hear it. It remains unclear if he will continue to work under his given name.

I'm interested to hear what's happening next with him.

If you (like me) were interested to hear what's happening next with him, Alpentine (http://alpentine.com) notes that the release of his new album In Conflict is delayed indefinitely while he tours with Arcade Fire.

It sounds like it's just a delay? But I don't know. (Vague reference to "several reasons" here (http://alpentine.com/discography/in-conflict).)

I was just poking around the site and hadn't noticed this before: Heartland Demos (http://alpentine.com/discography/export)

I really like Shara Worden singing "The Great Elsewhere".

So Owen (who posts on his forum) updated with this info (http://shzine.proboards.com/thread/6156/news-october-4-2013):

- The record is coming out in January or February. It is a full-stop 10/10 emotional rollercoaster and you are all gonna die when you hear it. There will be video(s), and a 7" around the same time.

- I am touring full-time with Arcade Fire as one of several "non-pictured" members-- the others may or may not include Tiwill (percussion), Diol (percussion), Marika (currently on mat. leave), Colin (sax), Michael (sax).

- OP touring will be limited to my "off-time" from that band, likely two to three weeks a season. As a result, we will be covering major markets, mostly-- that means London but not Birmingham, Paris but not Lille, and so on-- (just watch us confirm a show in Lille next month, ***).

- I have a ballet, it is being performed by the National Ballet of Canada. It features a soprano and a harpsichord and a full orchestra and it is very sci-fi. Here is the info: national.ballet.ca/performances/season1314/Innovation/

Yaaay! More epic song cycle orchestronica (oh god that's terrible) a la Heartland kpls.

It's cute that he posts on his forum (which he apparently shares with Xiu Xiu and Fun 100? woah).

Dude is freakishly talented and it's a shame he has obligations to Arcade Fire. It's not like they properly utilise him.

Also I've been listening to Plays to Please recently and I think it's my favorite Owen release :3 he's a regular modern VDP!

I want him to produce the next Joanna Newsom album.

^Plays to Please is really fucking flawless.
Still hoping Owen collaborates with Alex Lukashevsky in the near future.

Andrew
11-22-2013, 12:07 PM
That could actually be really cool! Owen has a shaky track record of collaboration - usually he's much better off in his chamber pop bubble - but his ridiculous big band cabaret reinventions of Deep Dark United songs are pretty much exemplary of why I love him so much and Lukashevsky can definitely bring the theatricality.

Owen Pallett announces 4th album, In Conflict

In Conflict features musical collaborations with Brian Eno and the Czech FILMharmonic Orchestra and is due to be released - vaguely - in the spring. You can watch an Alpine-themed trailer above, and peruse the tracklist below and believe it or not, we did not copy and paste this from a press release because nobody sends us press releases.

"I Am Not Afraid"
"In Conflict"
"On a Path"
"Song For Five & Six"
"The Secret Seven"
"Chorale"
"The Passions"
"The Sky Behind The Flag"
“—> (1)”
"The Riverbed"
"Infernal Fantasy"
"Soldiers Rock"
“—> (2)”

The music in the video is in very familiar territory to "Heartland" I think, but I'm looking forward to hearing the full thing.

Welppp I let my inner pirate have his way. Time 4 first impressions!

On my first listen, I'm feeling bemused by the beginning (that "drop" and the weirdo electronic sounds on the first track! wut), absolutely in love with the middle and somewhat disenchanted by the end. "On a Path" is an early favorite - tho I think I could just be clinging to its Heartland-isms and the simple, immediate brilliance of its chorus while I wait to warm to the rest - and "The Secret Seven" and "Chorale" are also especially brilliant. Lots of adventurous structures and interesting, beautiful arrangements, here.

The two tracks following the first instrumental throw a spanner in the works, for me. "Riverbed" is Owen trying his hand at a sort of heavy, atmospheric, emotive alt-rock but it leaves me sooo cold, is the most bombastic and least interesting musically and is the obvious album lowlight, imo. "Infernal Fantasy" tries similarly for something invigorating, I think, with its blaring, blooping, trance-like arpeggios, choral chanting and busy crescendo, but the overall textures and harmonies are kind of ugly and unappealing imo and, again, the song leaves me utterly cold. The last couple tracks are very good, tho!

Overall, I think we're looking at a colder, bleaker landscape than the warm, expansive world of Heartland, with more dissonance, dynamic contrast, angular, unpredictable melodies and blocky synth tones; 'In Conflict' could here refer to the sometimes brutal opposition between electronic, rock and chamber instrumentation (which were otherwise melded so organically on his last album). I'm talking comparatively, here - it's still an Owen Pallett release, and there's a clear progression from Heartland - but he's experimenting with new ideas to (imo) varying degrees of success.

Oh man, if "Riverbed" is the lowlight then I'm going to love this record. That song is one of my early favorites of the year.

Andrew
05-09-2014, 12:10 AM
It's only my lowlight! It's quite accomplished for what it is ("what it is" being big blustery indie rock), it just doesn't appeal to me. It isn't stylistically representative at all, tho, so I wouldn't expect more of the same.

Perky Compson
05-09-2014, 12:45 AM
Well, I mostly connect to the lyrics on it, I think musically I'm more inclined towards On a Path (which is stunning), so this still isn't bad news for me. :)

No song on the album is representative, really. The whole thing is all over the place... in a good way!

I would like to get into this artist, what 5 songs do you good people recommend as a taster for his work? Figured it's always good to ask fans. I have literally only watched the 6s and 7s video, and liked it enough to have a poke around. I just thought I'd ask here, as Unfers usually have good taste in this sort of thing and can help a girl out with a "best of."

Andrew
05-10-2014, 12:18 PM
I'll uh have a go. I don't know if these are my top favorites or whatever but they're definitely some of his most impressive, immediate and interesting:

"Lewis Takes Action (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSE9Cty2DPQ)" (basically an alien universe "Be My Baby" which is just as hooky as that song but also somehow even loftier and more exquisite. Owen's pop-composing and arranging at its most warm and sophisticated and forward-thinking. Totally exemplary of the album, which is my favorite of his.)

"He *ahem* 'Poos' Clouds (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pQl7kye_d8)" (the quintessential OP song, in my opinion, or at least what starts playing in my head when I think of him - all charming, detailed, dazzling arrangements and ethereal vocals. I first encountered it searching for RPG AMVs or whatever awful early-teen shut-ins search for and it CHANGED MUH LIFE.)

"Horsetail Feathers (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6imuFUR26HI)" (turns a Deep Dark United song into a flamboyant cabaret show-tune extravaganza with an arrangement so lush and intricate you'll forget it was ever meant to be a joke.)

"Song Song Song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cuzmxuGIjw0)" (Owen takes his live looping skillz to ludicrous extremes, squeezing a percussion orgy out of a humble violin.)

"This Lamb Sells Condos (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1kL568eg1w)" (this is the uh third song I've featured from one album :/ I felt a need to share, tho. It's something of a fan favorite and that piano bounce is pretty much unique to the song.)

Considering you enjoyed Song For Five & Six, I'll suggest the songs I think are amongst his most accessible:

The CN Tower Belongs to the Dead
The Great Elsewhere
E is For Estranged
Keep the Dog Quiet (Simon Bookish remix)
In Conflict
On a Path
Song For Five & Six
The Sky Behind the Flag
---> [1] + The Riverbed
Infernal Fantasy
Chorale

Sure, most songs are from the new album, but I think that compilation will be appreciated by people looking for catchy hooks who would otherwise not give his back catalogue a chance.

There's a great performance of "Lewis Takes Off His Shirt" where it starts lashing rain and the crew are trying to stop the show as the rain is getting on the stage to the gear, and he's basically telling them to wait until he finishes the song, and he's playing through this heavy rainstorm and the crowd are going mental because he keeps going and it's amazing.

I really think this album is flawless. The way songs start and then open up midway through is mindblowing even after 10+ listens. The only songs that haven't really connected with me yet are Infernal Fantasy and Chorale, and it's not because they're bad so much as that I haven't explored them enough. The piano break in I Am Not Afraid, the building intensity in The Sky Behind the Flag, the end of Soldiers Rock, that moment when the bottom falls out of The Secret Seven and then repairs itself - there are just so many moments that demand attention that it's almost easy to ignore how perfectly-arranged the less commanding sections are. The melodies are immediate but not predictable, his falsetto sounds great, and I'm just in awe. I haven't loved an album so much on the first few listens in quite a long time.

It's also gotten me to go back to Heartland, which I never liked as much as the Swedish Love Story EP. I forgot how amazing E is for Estranged and The Great Elsewhere were.

I wonder if he still likes Tori Amos. It seems like he did about 7.5 years ago: http://www.out.com/entertainment/2006/11/20/party-poopers
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Owen: So your goal with Grizzly Bear is to have 20 albums out and people are still listening to you?

Ed: No, maybe four. Four that people will come back to. What about you?

Owen: I hope to have a 30-CD box set by the time I'm 50. Just a lot of records.

Ed: Some are poop, some are not, right?

Owen: No...

Ed: You want all poop?

Owen: Yes. All poop.

Ed: One giant 30-disc poop set.

Owen: Yes. And I want it to be layered, like a lasagna.

Ed: Like a poopy Dante's Inferno.

Owen: Exactly. I wish you could designate the relative importance of each album with the size of the font on the cover art. So there's a listening order. You have an 84-point classic album that everybody should listen to, and then you move down into these specialized extrapolations that are more obscure and difficult. With titles in a 4-point font. Tori Amos could do something like that.

Ed: Huh. You should talk about it with her. You should collaborate with her!

Owen: Tori Amos? I would collaborate with her in her 1996 self, for sure. A friend of mine had a... nasty theory that Tori Amos, PJ Harvey, and Bj'rk all got brainwashed in 1996, and became inferior, robotic versions of their former selves. I pointed out that in 1996, all three singers appeared on the cover of Q magazine for the 'Women of Rock' issue. He theorized that maybe the Q magazine photographer was a catalyst in a massive misogynist plot.

Ed: That's not funny, that's mean. And I still love Bj'rk.

Owen: And I still love PJ Harvey and Tori Amos. I said it was a nasty theory.

Ed: Bj'rk, call me! PJ, you can call me too, if you want.

Owen: Yeah? What about Tori?

Ed: Tori... we can instant message.

Live on Soundcheck. Audio about a half hour long with some great interview stuff. I thought the whole thing would be up on vid but I only see Song for Five & Six so far:

I love this man. I've never seen him play as brilliantly as he did last Saturday. Ironically, I also noticed he seemed a bit unsure of himself that night. He started and stopped a couple of songs. With some crowd encouragement, "You've got this, Owen!", he started again and nailed it. He started and stopped E is for Estranged on the encore, "Is this ok guys??" Um...YES..."keep going!!!" My favourite Owen song ever. (At least until I went home and heard the new album later that night.) Seeing The Passions live was mesmerizing. I pretty much lost it during the encore. Truly brilliant performance. I haven't been this moved since a 90s Tori show. Yep, said it.

(Also, him putting his real phone number in the lyrics makes me adore him that much more...lol.)

What's this about a phone number in some song's lyrics?

I'm surprised that Owen doesn't seem to like To Venus and Back very much, yet he digs Unrepentant Geraldines. I'm about to give up on that album because none of the songs have stuck to me (though I do plan on keeping 16 Shades of Blue and the title track). The only reason I'm not too bummed out over UG is that In Conflict leaked around the same time.

Owen sings his phone number at the end of The Secret Seven. It is confirmed to be his actual number. He has said that he included it as part of his response to the It Gets Better project. A project he feels is a one-way response to the suicides of LGBT youth including violinist Tyler Clementi. There's some quotes here:

I personally feel almost exactly the same as Owen about Tori's output. I don't think Venus touches "The Magnificent Four". So it was a slight dip in fandom for me with that album. I think UG is a return to form for Tori compared to anything she's put out since SW. Weatherman, Oysters, and a few others have stuck with me and given me a case of "the feels" that I haven't had in ages from her. I also think we've seen such a renewed passion in the performances of all her old material this tour that it's kind of hard for me to separate the excitement I feel for the new material with the new life she's added to her performances of older songs. Even songs I never liked before. Like, I thought the Beekeeper was garbage but this new version of Parasol is pretty stunning. Sorry, end Tori tangent.

But yeah, In Conflict >>>>> UG for me. Like Miss Perky said, Album of the Year. I don't care if it's only May!

I love this record more than anything. Officially obsessed.

Quick unrelated question - has a studio version of his cover of Joanna Newsom's "Peach, Plum, Pear" been recorded and released somewhere? As a B-side or on some compilation perhaps? I've only ever heard bootleg live recordings and I'd love to hear a 'proper' one.

It's on the "Young Canadian Mothers" EP (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Young_Canadian_Mothers).

I bought the Japanese version and the LP for access to the bonus tracks, which did not disappoint. The piano arrangement for Secret Seven is breathtaking, and elevates a song I already thought damn near perfect.

Foxes in Fiction's album Ontario Gothic will be featuring Owen on strings, and FiF's website indicates that Owen will do another tour in the US in September. They've released a song to Pitchfork here (http://pitchfork.com/news/55780-foxes-in-fiction-share-shadow).

So wonderful. I encourage everyone to check out Foxes in Fiction and their label Orchid Tapes. They've been consistently releasing strong work in very nice vinyl packages, too.

His gig was amazing. I've seen him twice before and each time he's gotten better. The full band sound is huge.

I'll never have any children, I'd bear them and eat them, my children.
I'm gonna change my body by the light and the shadow of your suspicion.
I am no longer afraid.
The truth doesn't terrify us, terrify us.
My salvation is found in discipline, discipline, discipline.

I haven't smoked in seven years. But I will catch a drag if you are smoking.

Just adding my love for In Conflict. I'm still repeat listening.
It will be number two for me, I think.

Yup... Still my album of the year. For some reason, the piano on 'I Am Not Afraid' reminds me of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.
