OK, I had no idea this series even existed. This almost seems like some sort of cruel joke. Ever felt like riding a bicycle in a game? And that's all it was about? Well, here ya go:

I'll admit, the photo realism is fucking incredible... but... seriously? I had a laugh out loud moment when someone suggested "They will make a game for just about anything now. Power-Walking 2010."

07-05-2010, 10:31 PM
What? I mean......why? SERIOUSLY?

Honestly don't get what enjoyment or pleasure anyone would get out of something like this.

reposted from OIT:

We all went to Fun Depot today and had a blast for almost 5 hours. Here's one guy we ran across. Watch his feet... he was landing "Perfect" most of the time. My daughter is on his left, gaping as if to say "WTF?!" My reaction can be seen at the end of the video ;l

I am NOT playing this right now...

Your repsonse: ;l;l

Power-Walking 2010

OMG sign me up now ;l

Your repsonse: ;l;l

Yeah, that. That dude's either spent way too long practicing or has a weird leg disorder.

I see your crazy foot guy Dave and i raise it to a crazy hands man

;l Yeah, but that didn't happen in front of us. That guy has some serious skills, though.

Any advice on whether to buy an XBox360 or a PS3?

I already have two wireless 360 controllers, which would benefit towards a 360. I'm curious, though, as to your input. The PS3 has free online play vs. the 360 being $50/yr, although I heard that might go up. And as far as I can tell the 360 has more and better titles? I'm still leaning heavily on the 360 side, but I'd like to hear some opinions.

I think the best thing to do is find lists of exclusive titles for both the 360 and PS3 and then see overall which has the most games/franchises you prefer. Beyond that I don't see that there is necessarily any overwhelming case for either console beyond what suits you best. The exclusive titles are the main thing because you can still enjoy all cross-console games and each system has various pros and cons which aren't going to make a huge difference to you unless you are really picky. Also - if you are going to play online with friends then check out how many people use each console and that could be a deciding factor as well. There is nothing more tedious online than people getting involved in a console war because all it really comes down to is them trying to justify their own purchase to themselves. I have a PS3 and don't intend to ever get a 360 - I don't think the PS3 is 'better'; for me a computer console is a huge investment on its own and I just have more interest in the exclusive games than I do in the ones for Xbox. I also didn't have a Bluray player so that killed two birds with one stone. At this stage in the generation and with the amount of high quality muliple platform titles, there really isn't much difference, beyond that kind of personal preference, which should really swing anyone towards either system, in my view.

07-26-2010, 07:57 PM
Yeah, I'm curious as to how the PS3 online experience is, though. I know how the 360 is, and I love how the friend management system works, etc. I'm assuming you can download demos on the PS3? As well as full games? I'll do more research as time goes by, of course. I guess right now my curiosity is leaning towards the whole online experience, and all that it encompasses.

07-26-2010, 08:27 PM
Although there is a lot to debate, this video here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fX_bamk-uU) answers a lot for me. A lot more features have been added to Live than when last I owned one. At 1:52 they mention online services.

A 14 minute hashing of PSN vs. Live: Console Wars Round 7: Xbox 360 Vs. PS3 (Online Experience) (http://www.technobuffalo.com/blog/gaming/console-wars-round-7-xbox-360-vs-ps3-online-experience)

This, here, is also really interesting: Xbox 360 Vs. PS3: Round 4 (CPU) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmHY_VnuDdE)
- Very techie on hardware

07-26-2010, 09:51 PM
I guess it's a matter of taste, but I totally prefer the user-friendly interface of the 360. The whole Marketplace is much more logical than the PSstore, there's more (and better) content and managing friends/messages/date is much easier.
With the ps3, you always feel like you have to press 3 times as much buttons and navigate clumsier menus to get what you want.

07-26-2010, 09:57 PM
Yeah, that 14 minute video that I just posted really hit it out of the park for me. I'm all about the online gaming friends thing and it appears as though Live is specifically much more geared towards that. It looks like Live has grown leaps and bounds since I last used it.

Another new DLC pack for Dragon Age

Info here (http://www.mmorpg.com/showFeature.cfm/loadFeature/4421/page/1). Apparently this is going to be a very challenging DLC pack.

07-29-2010, 01:05 AM
wrong thread, sorry.

08-06-2010, 11:58 AM
Well, I've just begun to try to fix a co-worker's XBox360. It has the infamous RRoD.

Curious on how to do it? It's all over the web these days.

A good guide, although he forgets to mention a few things, and he can't spell worth a damn.

I wish I knew about this when my own 360 did this to me... anyone remember this?:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v195/alternate8/th_MVI_3085.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v195/alternate8/?action=view&current=MVI_3085.mp4)

I still cannot believe how much I sounded like a redneck then. Surely I don't sound that fucking awful, anymore... Damn hicks rubbing off on me.

Gaming's Most Obsessive Moments (http://wii.ign.com/articles/111/1110362p1.html)
How many of these are you guilty of?
I scored a 9 out of 12. Bah!

If I could jump in Dragon Age I'd be all over that door.

08-06-2010, 09:20 PM
I definitely do the Megaman boss door jump, and I always jump for the wand in Mario. Similarly, I have spent a ridiculous amount of time juggling the finish post in Sonic.

And I'm definitely an item hoarder. Most of it is stuff I never use, too. I just like having it JUST IN CASE.

I used to be an obsessive saver when it came to a lot of RPGs - I'd fill up entire memory cards with about two games and barely ever actually utilised the multiple saves. Now...not so much. FFXIII has one save file because quite frankly I don't give a shit.

08-06-2010, 09:57 PM
I'm definitely an item hoarder. And an ammo hoarder as well. Sometimes I try so hard to stick to the basic gun because I'm scared of wasting any other ammo, that I never get to properly play around with the more awesome guns.

08-06-2010, 10:02 PM

And jumping for the orbs in Castlevania 4 while hitting the whip, just so the character would freeze in a spectacular looking frame...?
I did :D

08-07-2010, 10:55 AM
I think the jumping bit most people do... it's odd. I know there weren't many doors in Oblivion that I didn't jump towards while activating the open door button. This is one obsession that goes back many years. Probably even to the mid 90's :p

Yup. Well, I'm getting ready to stick the motherboard in the oven at 400 degrees for 4 minutes. No, srsly.

I have destroyed so much Hyrulian real estate let me just tell you... I must be the most hated man in kakariko village with all the pots I destroy and all the chickens I harass! As far as I am concerned I should be charging them for landscaping services.

08-21-2010, 11:36 PM
;l Don't forget about the thousands of acres of grass that you have mowed.

If there is jumping in a game, I will just jump everywhere. I think i maxed out my acrobatics on Oblivion before I got 1/3 of the way through the story. Even on Final Fantasy 7/8/9 when I'm flying around in the Airship I go up and down over and over. I cannot explain my jumping obsession.

08-23-2010, 11:49 AM
Back in the day I basically cartwheeled all the way through DKC. And I usually can't resist flying all the way through Donut Plains 1 in Super Mario World. HAS TO BE DONE.

08-25-2010, 06:46 PM
I'll find out in just one minute if the guy selling this will take my offer. He's an ok guy and we've talked for about an hour total..... COME ON MAN... CALL ME!

08-26-2010, 08:19 AM
A transparant 360?
Woah!! Did you get it?

08-26-2010, 10:43 AM
I am getting it today!! Deal is done!

08-26-2010, 11:05 AM
Hey... wasn't there a sticky here like at the Other Place™ where people shared their gamer names, etc.? Someone needs t make one *looks at you, Wout!*

08-26-2010, 11:19 PM
Well, here it is! I'm not online with it yet.

08-27-2010, 06:44 PM
Totally wicked!! :D

(my 360 tag is Wout NL but I didn't renew my gold membership last year. I hardly play online...)

08-27-2010, 06:51 PM
Where can I get this on a shirt:

Oh noes, say it ain't so, Wout! I'll add you whenever I get online and stare at your offline-liness.

08-28-2010, 08:26 PM
Well, I didn't think I would succeed, but I got online by using a laptop as a wireless adapter, b/c I don't have an XBox360 wireless adapter. I'll post a pic soon.
As usual I just could not think of a gamertag, so Courey came up with PopGoesYerFace and I went with it ;l

08-28-2010, 10:34 PM
For some damn reason I can't share my media from the laptop to the 360, the 360 isn't shown as a device. /pissy
Anyone know any solutions for this? I've checked and checked but nothing works.

edit: fixed!

10-08-2010, 09:20 PM
Red ring of death... FUCK!!!

10-08-2010, 09:27 PM
ohhell. :( poor wout, you are not having much luck lately. :(:(

eta - is it still under warranty? if not, maybe you could find someone locally to fix it. on our local craig's list, there's always someone offering to fix them for like $40 or so...

10-08-2010, 10:48 PM
Nope, no warranty, it's one of the first ones.
I already emailed someone in my area who claims he can fix them so here's hoping.
If not, I'm going to treat myself to a new one. No WAY that I can be unemployed in gaming-high-season with no xbox ;l

10-08-2010, 10:58 PM
That's what I'm sayin'! ;l
I hope you can get it fixed!

10-09-2010, 09:20 AM
Turns out it can be fixed but there's a 50% chance that it'll come back within a week, due to it being an older model.
So, since I really can't be bothered with that shit, later today I can pick up my new modded Xbox elite 250 gig special Final Fantasy edition, with the FFXIII, 2 controllers and headset :D

10-09-2010, 01:45 PM

A week? Fuck! They're either working on several consoles or are the suckage.
And a NEW modded one?! What? Do they grow on trees over there? Hook a brother up! ;l :p How much USD is your new one?!

10-09-2010, 05:10 PM
There's a shop here where you can bring your xbox and they mod it for you in less than 1 hour... Don't they do that in the states?
I paid 250 EUR / 350 USD for my new one, modding included, the FFXIII edition with a whopping 250 gig HD and hdmi output.
Thank god for being able to swap harddrives and transfer gamesaves with a usb-drive!
Can you imagine losing your Oblivion saves? HORROR!!!

10-10-2010, 12:00 AM
No, there's no actual shop where that can be done, or at least gotten away with. I'm sure there's some shops that "secretly" do modding, but they'd be dumbasses for being well known for it. CList has some ads, but that's about all I know on where to get it done (for $40). I know you have to flash your drive and some other stuff, but seeing as mine isn't modded I've never bothered to look too deeply into it.

Congrats, tho, man!

ETA: My Oblivion t-shirt finally bit the dust and is going in the trash :(

10-10-2010, 01:32 AM
We decided to buy some points which we'll be spending them on Limbo, Braid and Peggle. And seeing as this is Live appreciation month, if you spend 2400msp or more you are given an extra 800 points! I'm curious as to what other games some of you have played that you have downloaded off of the arcade that you might think it worthy of us spending the other 800 on. Actually, we'll have 1200 points left.

10-10-2010, 07:28 AM
Dave, Flashing the drive IS modding! You don't need anything else :) Get to it, man! It's really easy, you can always get it undone and they don't have to break the warranty seal or anything. (the only downside is: don't play online with illegal copies in the drive, you'll get banned, but that's all).

Re: good arcade games
- Magic the Gathering, if you like that sort of thing
- Shadow Complex, just like metroid / castlevania but with guns.
- Lara Croft and the guardian of light, no classic tomb raider game but a TON of fun. Also has co-op play!
- puzzle quest, addictive bejeweled-like puzzler meets rpg.
- super puzzle fighter 2, addictive bejeweled-like puzzler meets street fighter.

10-10-2010, 08:31 PM
I thought the modding part was the act of soldering the chip to the board. Flashing, I thought was preparing the system for the game by using some sort of software written to a disc that you insert first. I dunno. I'm trying to stay away from that sort of stuff nowadays, I feel like I started to get too deep into it. I had a warning from Universal Motion Pictures a few years back, and then about 6 months ago from a gaming company. Both were preventable. I hadn't taken my necessary precautions and paid for it (luckily, just not literally). Nah, I'm done with it all. It's like trying to quit smoking cigarettes, though. :p

10-11-2010, 03:27 AM
I'm going to kill Lego Batman in its stupid face. I have 2 achievements left in order to have 100% completion. One is to collect all the minikits [I have ONE piece left], and the other is "The City Is Safe For Now" [or... 100% completion]. The thing is... that one tiny little teensy piece of minikit is a GINORMOUS PITA. I thought doing 2 player would make it a piece of cake to get, but instead it just made it even more difficult.

[of course I beat it about a half hour later ;)]

10-11-2010, 07:29 PM
[of course I beat it about a half hour later ;)]
Of course you did :p

10-12-2010, 02:45 PM
so, uh.. don't tell Dave, but .. I just had to dismantle the xbox because this little bastard got stuck all the way in the back. This little round bastard is the bane of my existence when it comes to the xbox. HATE.

That was by far one of the most nerve wracking things I've ever done. [updown]

10-12-2010, 07:17 PM
;l Yeah, I hate that thing. I dunno why it picks on you, though :p Oh, I'm sure you had a blast opening the case...

10-12-2010, 08:39 PM
I was LITERALLY SHAKING and muttering under my breath, "ohpleasedon'tbreak." ;l;l;l

10-12-2010, 08:45 PM
What the hell is that?

10-12-2010, 08:49 PM
I don't know what it's called, but it's magnetized, and you put in right in the center of your disks to keep it in place when it spins so it doesn't go flying off into the back of your xbox. You may guess correctly that about once a day I have to dig this thing out of the xbox... though usually not by having to completely dismantle the thing!

10-12-2010, 08:56 PM
But that's not a standard thing, right? Cause mine doesn't have that. In fact, I've never seen one of those ever before...

10-12-2010, 08:58 PM
BTW I'm going to renew my gold membership tomorrow. I think we got some games in common. You guys got Gears of War 2 and Fable 2, right?

10-12-2010, 09:23 PM
No, it's usually attached.. I don't know why ours is not!

And yes! I'm sure Dave would love to play you!

10-13-2010, 12:04 AM
Check Courey's game list in the other thread. I'll play you in whatever you want. It might take a bit for me to get re-accustomed to a game, tho. Sometimes it takes me a whole matchmaking game for me to meld from MW2 to Reach.

The disc holder isn't attached because the modder wanted people to see the inside of the disc drive. There's no top to the disc drive case. One of these days we'll replace the drive. :)

Blizzcon Halloween Costumes Photo Gallery (http://videogames.yahoo.com/events/blizzcon-photo-gallery/blizzcon-photo-gallery/1415399/4)

At a certain point you'll scare the fuck out of kids ;l Love it!

I also love this Silent Hill Nurse costume:

10-26-2010, 12:42 PM
I'm still free of blizz's clutches... one year of WOW equals a new gaming console.
some of those costumes are good however.

10-26-2010, 12:55 PM
Congrats! I've been free for about a year, as well. Maybe a little more. It's amazing...

On another note, I'm seriously contemplating making my own costume this year. I'd love to make a P-Head one, but I'd freeze my ass off. I might go with a really fucked up zombie wearing a thick, plaid, long-sleeved shirt. I said I would be a zombie last year, but something has got to give. Speaking of which, I have some nice, ripped up jeans I cold use. Too bad Courey won't dress up :p

Yeah, I know zombies are getting played out, but fuckitall

10-29-2010, 03:09 PM
I pre-ordered dragon age 2 and they took 20 bucks off my order. sweet.

Two Worlds 2 has been leaked?

What's with all of these games coming out? Someone let me know if Two worlds 2 is any good....

11-08-2010, 08:39 PM
anyone here ever done a gamer lock-in? I'm thinking of doing one, but with SNES RPGs. (FF IV-VI, Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG, EarthBound, among others)

11-08-2010, 08:54 PM
I've never heard of that. What is a gamer lock-in?

11-10-2010, 11:49 AM
Basically, ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin (gotta love TVTropes) you lock yourselves in a house/room with (totally unhealthy) food and drinks and play for a determined amount of time or until you beat the game or surpass a goal.

11-10-2010, 08:16 PM
;l Sounds like the perfect WoW dedication.

Nah, I've never done that, at least not purposefully.

11-10-2010, 08:29 PM
Haha not purposefully ;l

But they're loads of fun, but it always tends to be done with multiplayer games and the like.

11-11-2010, 03:02 PM
I probably did that with dragon age on sunday.

11-11-2010, 03:41 PM
Two Worlds 2 has been leaked?

What's with all of these games coming out? Someone let me know if Two worlds 2 is any good....

I'll let you know tomorrow ;)

Edit: Ok, played for 2 hours, the verdict so far...
It looks better and plays a bit better but it's just as clunky and rough as #1.

- The dialogues are terrible, the music stutters in and out of the cutscenes, the animation is SO BAD that it made me laugh: all the characters do is raise their arms and shift their feet. Terrible!
- The controls are hit and miss. When the game starts, the main buttons open your map and quest log. You can re-assign them but I wonder why they were there in the first place. Clunky!
- The magic system seems to be quite nifty though, you can customize your spells. Archery and sneak work okay. Melee combat is button mashing.
- it starts off slooooooowwwwwwww. Yak yak yak, stupid cutscenes and silly dialogues aplenty and a tutorial level that is terribly scripted.

Oblivion killer? Absolutely not. Better than Two Words 1? Sure, but that ain't hard ;)

They even have GTA: San Andreas for a mere 400 mp ($5). Not too shabby.

I had no idea this place even existed until yesterday, but you can find xbox360 gamers by state. People who have signed up, anyway. I signed up! There's over 400 registered gamers in North Carolina. Just what I was looking for: http://xboxamerica.com/leaderboards

12-05-2010, 06:36 PM
I played DKCR

it's not as good at the original SNES series but I think it could be the BEST 2D platformer out on the wii. The later levels frustrated me so much with how difficult they were but that can only be a good thing. It's the polar opposite of Kirby epic yarn.

now has anyone here picked up mickey? I'm saving that one for if I get any gift cards this year (not that I want any).

This may seem rather pathetic to some of you, but I just got done building an HD PC for a customer and was absolutely blown away by the quality. I slapped Two Worlds 2 on there and had my character running around the very start of the game while I marveled at the texture quality, the near 3D of it all blew me away. So much better than the new consoles in HD seeing as the resolution was almost twice that (in HD) of either the 360 or the PS3. I'm just in awe over here... :p
Ultra HD quality at about 2560x1600 at 80fps was a fucking shocker. I've been wanting to stay away from owning another PC, but this just may be way too tempting for me :D

Anybody got any good ideas for XBox360 games for my daughter (8 years old)? She has The Sims 3 and loves it. She's more into strategy/sim-like stuff, and puzzles. She was bonkers over Spore, but that's not on the consoles. I've been seeing Viva Pinata mentioned a lot...

12-22-2010, 08:12 AM
Viva Pinata (get the second one) is great fun!!! Especially if she liked Spore, as it has the same collecting-creatures kinda thing, although completely different.

"Beyond Black Mesa" - an amateur short film set in the Half-Life universe, starring Adrian Shepard (the main character from Half-Life: Opposing Force).

It's pretty well made but unfortunately the zombies aren't headcrab zombies, I'm guessing because the CGI/prosthetics would be too costly if you didn't want them to look weird. (In the "Escape from City 17" short film made a few years ago, they used some kind of combo of CGI and props to make the headcrabs on the zombies, and there was just something kind of off about it.)

01-23-2011, 08:23 AM
I must say, scenery wise, they managed to get the vibe of the game pretty much spot on! Well done :)

I am going to TRY to make an attempt to start customizing controllers. And if I get good enough or successful enough I'm move on to cases. Customizing controllers/cases can be fairly lucrative if one can get the word out. Looking forward to painting my first one. Here's some samples of what you can do. Some are just painted and some have custom LED lights, as well.

http://ts3.mm.bing.net/images/thumbnail.aspx?q=810483783850&id=e5a63f0a3bee0f02878182056e449f61 http://ts1.mm.bing.net/images/thumbnail.aspx?q=528364015212&id=62fb8efca53640893aae5ea78e26c93b http://ts3.mm.bing.net/images/thumbnail.aspx?q=819367380454&id=7041314674c68b04ce9dc117994bcff9 http://ts4.mm.bing.net/images/thumbnail.aspx?q=668822940087&id=2df23a8f63e8b43ac2dcc7222ce46209 http://ts4.mm.bing.net/images/thumbnail.aspx?q=763476518111&id=6bcb8000a519bb9020ce573189ffd489

And then for extremely high modding I can do something like this:
http://ts4.mm.bing.net/images/thumbnail.aspx?q=766759147207&id=f26e952abbb72b1c5274948131b35a9a http://ts2.mm.bing.net/images/thumbnail.aspx?q=766162440297&id=65dca96ac9ba9819e192f0bbda49802a

I've just GOT to do it. I've always been artistic but haven't done a damn thing to ease that side of me. And seeing as I love gaming... WIN/WIN! :)

03-17-2011, 10:01 PM
OK, I'll have everything I need to do this tomorrow.

I have a request! I need some of you to come up with ideas for customizing my first controller. Keep it simple seeing as this is my first time. Whether it be a design/color scheme or something like a figure stencil (like Master Chief, or whatever - just... no Master Chief, though :p ) for an outline. Can have letters, numbers, whatever. I will not be adding LEDs this time around, I'm just designing and painting.

Whatever you come up with will be the design for my own controller. Don't think too heavily about my likes or dislikes, just use your own imagination. Whenever I make a decision on what to do it should be done within a day or two (because I have a life) and I will take a picture of it. It will take about a week to cure for ravenous gameplay useage, though, so the paint/gloss holds up after cure.

Ideas?! :D

03-17-2011, 10:53 PM
My first decent idea is to create an Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim controller. Hmmm.... I may actually sell it instead of keep it.

03-18-2011, 03:18 PM
Well, I got all three coats of paint on the parts and then all three coats of clear coat gloss finish. Going with a leather-like brown and tan. It's very sunny out so the tan looks white. The rest is going to be a surprise :D

03-18-2011, 07:09 PM
Dave: BIOSHOCK!!! Big Daddy!!!

03-19-2011, 03:02 AM
I might try that. I've only seen one and it looks like absolute shit.

03-19-2011, 09:28 PM
Well, my first attempt at customizing a controller. It could have been worse. Then again it could have been better :p I learned some things along the way so I won't be making those mistakes again. I need to do a thing or two to the dragon heads to make them look less like they were painted crudely on.

You probably can't tell but the red near the necks of the dragon is a brighter red and it dithers into brown with red metallic flakes. The triggers and battery pack are leather brown.

I added a black outline around the dragon. It looks slightly better.

Next controller to be worked on is my son's red controller, but he isn't exactly sure what he wants yet.
My daughter wants a metallic purple and violet controller with butterflies. I can see it now and it should look very nice :)

03-23-2011, 06:08 PM
I finished my daughter's controller. She picked out the colors and what she wanted on it. I think the colors she chose were really good. I must say, I did a good job wsith the fade effect. :)

Also, I wanted to recommend TVersity (http://www.tversity.com/download)to anyone who wants to EASILY share media on their home network. I'm currently using my laptop to stream movies to my XBox360. Nintendo Set to Reveal New Console (http://wii.ign.com/articles/116/1161875p1.html)

According to multiple reports today, Nintendo will reveal a new console at E3 this coming June.

Game Informer first reported that the console is capable of running games at "HD resolutions." Our sources have said the the console is significantly more powerful than the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and that Nintendo's intent is to recapture the hardcore market. Another source said it is capable of 1080p resolutions.

Nintendo is reportedly showing the console to publishers to garner interest for a late 2012 launch.

About damn time! I had lost all hope that Nintendo was ever going to get "serious" and keep cranking out games like this Babysitting Mama (http://wii.ign.com/objects/143/14352208.html)

edit: ;l Andy from GI tweeted these:

"I have never been a fan of the name Wii, so please let them change it....please?"
"lol RT @adrianchm: @GI_AndyMc It's gonna be called Wiii, and able to render in tWiiDii without glasses."
"I'm sure they will come up with something silly or stick with silly, but I sure liked elegant Nintendo naming conventions in the 90s"
"HDii pops up a lot as a joke, and would fit with silly - Maybe mash them together and make WiiD, stoners would love it"

04-16-2011, 07:26 AM
"and able to render in tWiiDii without glasses." ;l ;l ;l

I'm curious, though. There are rumors of controllers with touch-screens in them which would be kinda cool. Still, to succeed in this day and age they need:
- better online functionality
- not rely solely on the control gimmick like the Wii, cause the fun and novelty wears off really fast
- less kiddy-based stuff
- new game series instead of only mario/zelda/metroid to rely on
- much much MUCH better 3rd party support

04-16-2011, 03:44 PM
motion control got so tiring...

I only really liked it in Mario Galaxy and nothing else. ( I use the classic controller and gamecube controller for Mario Kart)

and I only bought all the main titles like Mario zelda metroid etc. (but it would be nice to more stuff from star fox, kirby, fire emblem etc.)
but all the crappy 15 dollar games like M&M racing for example saturated the market with utter crap. I'd rather see more stuff from capcom.

and I hate the way the virtual console just stopped offering anything good.

well I have enjoyed this console a lot and all of the above are minor complaints. :)

04-16-2011, 04:24 PM
Yeah, I totally agree about motion control getting old quick. Those rumors about the controller also include the possibility of each controller costing $100. Nintendo has done well to survive in a market not so much in their favor. They have a lot of changing to do if they want to be considered "for serious gamers". The Wii feels like an idea not fully implemented. Perhaps they made it so easy to acquire to garner the money for their REAL project. Who knows... It will be odd, yet interesting, to see real side-by-sides of graphics and performances of a new Nintendo console, especially if it's going to be testing their competitor's competence.

04-16-2011, 06:59 PM
oh see what they might be doing...

it will be like playing on a big huge DS with the top screen being your TV of choice and the bottom screen being what's on your controller touchscreen but all with better graphics.

04-16-2011, 10:05 PM
;l possibly. If they want to be inventive they need to carry it through to perfection. Not just "a good start" or, "look what we can do". Fucking THRILL us, Nintendo! [popcorn]

04-22-2011, 07:21 PM
I sense good things: Project Cafe: The Tech Behind Nintendo's Next Console (http://gear.ign.com/articles/116/1163325p1.html)

Based on what they are saying the controller will do, this might be spot-on:

Consolidation. Right. Agreed. Why buy a portable, a second "mini console" (PSP, etc.) when you can stream games to your controller via the master unit?

05-10-2011, 10:44 AM
I guess ~102 quadrillion customizations for your character didn't save Brink from a score of 6.0 (http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/116/1166987p1.html). Yeah, IGN bastards set the coarse(?)

05-13-2011, 09:44 PM
Eerily enough, I actually agree with IGN about the 6.0. I made the Friday the 13th mistake of getting Brink, and while the graphics are a mixed bag of good and the customizations are ok, that didn't save it from the terrible gameplay. I actually TRIED to like it. Luckily me and the manager at my local Gamestop get along well and he let me trade it back in for full price on older games (typically, I should only have gotten around 25$ for it). I sure hope Rage is a lot better.

Oh, and I pre-ordered LA Noire :D Too bad I can't pick it up Monday night at midnight.

ION, Dude Has Seizure While Playing Oblivion, Sues Bethesda (http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2011/05/13/oblivion-seizure.aspx)

Ryan McLaughlin was a former pilot in the Navy, and it's "former" thanks to Oblivion if his claims are true. He says that flashing lights in the gigantic Bethesda game caused him to have the first seizure he's ever experienced, and he subsequently lost his flying status. His claim states the following: "The product was so designed that it exceeded the upper acceptable limit of more than 3 flashes over a 1 second period, as well as acceptable spatial pattern and luminance flash limits. These risks were not made known to the plaintiff and/or an ordinary consumer prior to the time of purchase."

He's looking to get some cash for his medical bills, product liability damages, and punitive damages. Obviously we can't say with any certainty if his claims are legitimate or not, but I personally don't remember any strobe light parties going on in Cyrodiil.

All I can think of is the lightning. There IS a warning of epileptic seizure for most games nowadays... including Oblivion. Although I feel sorry for this guy, I hope it gets dropped. Or at least some kind of mutual agreement more out of sympathy from Bethesda, but that could start a chain reaction.

"by UglyContainer Friday, May 13, 2011 at 05:32 PM

This guy isn't going to get anything from Bethesda it clearly warns in the instruction booklets in every game about seizures, thats like sueing burger king for having a stroke after eating too many cheeseburgers."

CoD MW3 vs. Battlefield 3

I was hoping that BF3 will take the crown away from CoD, but the news coming out of Activision, coupled with these screenshots makes me wonder. The MW series are my favorite (from CoD), so this is going to be a tough call. The fanboys on either side have a tough fight on their hands.

There are no real close-up shots of the BF3 models, but if I were to judge both games based on these 2 screens, MW3 would win based on graphics (absolutely stunning). Hmmm...
But BF has always been my favored game play. The run-n-gun of CoD just gets old.

05-14-2011, 11:13 PM
Those MW3 images are ingame screenshots..???!!! Holy cow!

L.A. Noire is receiving an average score of 8.5 from several gaming sites. I'll be picking it up tomorrow instead of midnight tonight, seeing as I work nights.

Anyone playing this one yet? Impressions.

05-16-2011, 10:13 PM
I'm probably getting it later this week! 8.5 is pretty decent. I guess with a game of this scale and ambitions, some things were bound to be less tight. Biggest complaint seems to be repetition. Yeah, like Grand Theft Auto games didn't get repetitive after, oh i dunno, 2 hours :D

05-16-2011, 10:33 PM
I'm up for the change of pace. Seeing as this is a game like no other, and what with I've read in the reviews... just the basis of the game, I can't wait! Solving murders and running after homicidal maniacs sounds awesome, especially seeing as it's like one HUGE crime-solving movie that you just happen to play a crucial role in.

is animal crossing worth it for the wii. I missed out the first time it was available. now it's back for 20 bucks. would the cutezy factor kill it for me? I used to play the Sims. Is it like that?

Pro-game MP rewrites Modern Warfare censure motion (http://www.reghardware.com/2011/11/23/mps_backdown_over_call_of_duty_debate/)

The House of Commons has changed its opinion that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 mimics the London bombings, amending an Early Day Motion that proposed the BBFC take further precautions when allowing a game to be sold.

The revamped EDM now goes as far as to actually praise Activision's big-seller.

Labour MP Tom Watson (West Bromwich East) made his pro-game views known when he completely rewrote the Motion to say:

"That this House notes the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) gave the video game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 an 18 classification, noting that 'the game neither draws upon nor resembles real terrorist attacks on the underground'."

It isn't easy to imagine parliamentary old boys bashing control pads and calling to each other, 'Oh darn it, it's actually rather jolly good isn't it, chaps?'

However, that could well be the case as the EDM now tips its top hat towards Activision claiming, "the game has an excellent user interface and challenges the gamers' dexterity as well as collaborative skills in an online setting".
It then declares the House "encourages the BBFC to uphold the opinion of the public that whilst the content of videogames may be unsettling or upsetting to some, adults should be free to choose their own entertainment in the absence of legal issues or material which raises a risk or harm".

Earlier this month, another Labour MP, Keith Vaz, and other MPs proposed to discuss sanctioning sales further. The original EDM read:

"This House is deeply concerned about the recently released video game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, in which players engage in gratuitous acts of violence against members of the public; notes in particular the harrowing scenes in which a London Underground train is bombed by terrorists, bearing a remarkable resemblance to the tragic events of 7 July 2005; further notes that there is increasing evidence of a link between perpetrators of violent crime and violent video games users; and calls on the British Board of Film Classification to take further precautions when allowing a game to be sold."

The amendment is a triumph for pro-gamers, a middle finger up to luddites who prefer to blame social disturbance on button bashers in a virtual warzone, over their own governance shortcomings.

Then again, banning a videogame that made a quarter of a billion quid on its first day of sales would be a tall order, even for those who like to think they're pulling the strings. ®

Good on him. Tom Watson is one of our better MPs and talks a lot of sense on a number of topics. He'll never last in Parliament.

The new dashboard update for the XBox360 is... alright, I guess. I don't have a Kinect so I don't have those "luxuries". Although, there seem to be some issues, one of which has kicked my a/c offline.

Sooo... I have a desktop now, ALMOST capable of running the newest games at excellent quality. Only thing is, the person I got it from was using a fan to cool the thing off b/c he was unaware that the GFX card he had someone install for him required more juice than the GPU could supply, hence it would shut off whenever pushed. I have taken the GFX card out reformatted it, and it runs fine. Now to wait until I can afford a better GPU and get to some serous PC gaming :D

Link is Dead (http://wii.ign.com/articles/121/1215510p1.html)

I haven't read this one yet, as I need to head to work, but at a fast glance it appeared a good read.

I've been putting some major thoughts into installing Morrowind on this PC, with a lot of mods, especially for graphics. I've never played Morrowind before, but so many people say it is one of, if not THE best TES game, to date. I really want to see what the hype is about.

Will I be disappointed?

Answer: Yes. I just couldn't get over the too old-school feeling of it. Maybe I'm just not ready for it. Instead, I'm modding Skyrim :)

So, I know I might be the only one, but I really dislike the turn that the Resident Evil franchise took towards more fast-paced gameplay starting with 4. I ACHE for a new RE game that plays more like the first few installments. RE1 and 2 are still two of my favorite games of all time, and I played the shit out of Nemesis, too.

01-20-2012, 08:14 AM
RE4 is by far my favorite. They had the balance between spooky and shootty just right. RE5 was meh and I never even finished it. RE6 looks like it's going to be even more shooty but I'll reserve judgement ;)

Mark, the 3DS is getting a RE this month and they say it's a return to form!

01-20-2012, 07:36 PM
More details emerge about RE6 (http://www.gametrailers.com/side-mission/2012/01/20/more-resident-evil-6-details-emerge/?p=3396?xrs=synd_facebook). Maybe they got the hint.... Sounds tantalizing, anyway.

01-21-2012, 07:30 AM
Right, so the end-result of all this is that I'm playing RE4 again :D

I just want slow zombies back. ;_;

RE4 Wii edition is one of my favourite games ever. RE5 on PS3 is decidedly meh even if it does look nice.

I once played RE4 for 18 hours straight and only went to bed because I had no controller batteries left charged. I had some really fucked up dreams. ;l

WHAT!? Next-gen Xbox is rumored to use some form of anti-used-game enforcement.

Saints Row Dev: Xbox 720 Used Game Ban 'Fantastic' (http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/121/1218051p1.html)
- Consumers 'will grow to understand.'

Oh, hell no! Seriously?! There goes Gamestop. And wtf do we do with a game once we have beaten it or find out we hate it? Throw it in the trash?! I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO not for this bullshit.

02-08-2012, 03:07 PM
Oh Lord. Way to go Microsoft in understanding your consumer base.

As much shit as I give Gamestop (inane prices on various used games, obnoxious employee code, getting rid of classic used titles), they're pretty fantastic for being the leading exclusively-gaming retail store in the country. I'd hate to lose gaming stores altogether.

Funny thing is that I don't even buy very many used games anymore given all of the bad experience I've had with used copies (especially with PSone titles) & the desire for a complete product (music fans generally take better care of their CDs and cases, etc than games in terms of selling copies). But God, I'd have missed out on so many great titles were it not for being able to buy games used. I don't own any Microsoft consoles, but I've considered playing around with one and seeing if it's worth it at some point down the line, but that'd be enough to keep me away from buying one.

02-08-2012, 04:30 PM
Consumers "will grow to understand" our increasing control over products even after they have bought them. Sure they will. This sounds like every other form of publishing at the moment with its pigheaded insistence that THIS IS THE ONLY WAY and CONSUMERS JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND THAT WE NEED MOAR PROFIT$$$!!1!

I think game prices are often quite unreasonable when they first hit the market and I'm not willing to drop that much money for a product that - as is the case more and more these days - may be extremely unsatisfying or downright objectionably shit. But unlike things like music and film and books, I'll manage without a lot of gaming. I'm already horrendously selective in order to avoid wasting time and money and this will just push me further and further away from gaming. Eh, I'll live.

02-08-2012, 05:41 PM
I guess in years time, customers might get used to it. Gamers are quite flexible... And I can understand that they have to do something against loss of income (due to piracy as well) but I can never agree with companies adding such limitations to their product. When you buy something, it's yours to sell on if you want and should still function. How about borrowing, or rentals..? It's so very impractical. Also, for a company currently trying so hard to buy into the family-friendly image, they sure are shooting themselves in the foot with this.

There are other possibilities being tested right now, like Online passes: each game gets shipped with a code that works one time only and unlocks extra content. People who buy games 2nd hand might not care too much about a smidge of extra content so this rewards day-of-release buyers without punishing them. 2nd hand buyers who end up loving the shit out of a game they got for 5 bucks can then always purchase a code themselves, should they want to.
First time this system was used there was a LOT of hooplah on forums etc but in a rather short amount of time gamers have sort of gotten used to it already. We can be quite flexible :)

Also, something I can see happening if this does happen: you can already buy triple-A titles from last xmas season for 50% of the original price. If full-priced games get this restriction, people might wait en masse until the price drops, especially since these days it's only a matter of weeks. It wouldn't surprise me if this only hurts the retailers, not the game studios or publishers.

02-08-2012, 05:54 PM
^Yes especially to that last point!

I think this is all further evidence that we're one step closer to a period where the consumer doesn't really own anything. Very soon we won't buy products, we'll subscribe to them or pay for access that the publisher can revoke at any point for any reason (see also...well, anything sold in an electronic format!).

02-08-2012, 08:44 PM
I've already been miffed that I can't own one copy of a game but use it on more than one console (installing - locally). This is one of the few reasons why I steer away from buying other consoles for the kids. I'd LOVE to play with them online (not just split screen), but if I would have to buy 3 copies of a game just to play it with my kids in the same house... I think it sucks. I wish there was a way to do this.

And now they want me to pay outrageous prices for each? There went any probability that I'll care to own more than one of the same console. If I can buy a used game for 10 bucks, I'd be more than likely to buy it 3 times for 30 bucks. But there is zero probability of me buying 3 of the same game for 180 dollars.

Double Fine (creators of Psychonauts) decided to open up a Kickstarter account to raise money for new adventure game and now have over a million dollars at their disposal (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/66710809/double-fine-adventure)

This is exciting! I'll probably donate some money myself. Psychonauts was one of the most creative and fun games I've ever played. I got permanently stuck at the last stage with the circus, though. =( So hard.

posting from my ps vita :)

Awesome! Do you have a PS3? If so, let me know how that remote play works. I know you can connect locally via home network and then remotely via internet. It's the remotely via internet that makes me skeptical b/c it sounds too good to be true. I'm wondering how well it works when a mile or more from home.

02-26-2012, 01:22 PM
I do have a ps3, but I have no idea what that remote play stuff actually does ahaha! I'll look into it.
All I know is that the screen looks amazing and Uncharted is fab!

We'd better have a separate thread on release because I'm gonna be SPAMMING THE HELL OUT OF HERE.

Feel free to create one, b/c if you don't, I probably will when it's released. I heard they are releasing the single player 1st? Or something along those lines, so there are no more delays.

US Congressmen expand call for violence warning label on nearly all video games (http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2012/03/us-congressmen-expand-call-for-violence-warning-label-on-nearly-all-video-games.ars)

Two US Congressmen Monday once again proposed a bill that would require the vast majority of video games to bear a warning label about content they consider "potentially damaging."

Under the one-page Violence in Video Games Labeling Act [PDF link], packaging for all video games except those rated "EC" for Early Childhood would be required to prominently display a message reading "WARNING: Exposure to violent video games has been linked to aggressive behavior." The proposed label would be required even if the video game in question is not violent.

"The video game industry has a responsibility to parents, families and to consumers—to inform them of the potentially damaging content that is often found in their products," bill sponsor Representative Joe Baca (D-CA) said, as reported by The Hill. "They have repeatedly failed to live up to this responsibility."

"Just as we warn smokers of the health consequences of tobacco, we should warn parents—and children—about the growing scientific evidence demonstrating a relationship between violent video games and violent behavior," co-sponsor Representative Frank Wolf (R-VA) said. "As a parent and grandparent, I think it is important people know everything they can about the extremely violent nature of some of these games."
Previous bills

This is not the first time that Baca and Wolf have proposed legislation requiring warning labels for video games. The first such bill was introduced in 2009, and would have required a label that said, "WARNING: Excessive exposure to violent video games and other violent media has been linked to aggressive behavior" (italics added to highlight differences from current bill). That bill also asked for warning labels only for games rated T (Teen) or higher—the current bill lowers that threshold to games rated E for Everyone or higher.

The same bill was re-introduced in January 2011 before going on to die a quiet death in the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.

Much of the concern over the link between video games and violence can be traced back to a statement released by the American Psychological Association in 2000, which warned parents about excessive exposure to violent games. However, the APA has since retracted that statement, and published a thorough study of video game violence research in its Review of General Psychology. That study found that, while playing violent games can lead to an immediate increase in aggression, such increases are mostly limited to children with prior mental health problems.

"Violent video games are like peanut butter," said Texas A&M University's Christopher J. Ferguson told Reuters when that study was published. "They are harmless for the vast majority of kids but are harmful to a small minority with pre-existing personality or mental health problems."

'Star Wars' Video Game Creators Could Add 'Darth RuPaula,' A 'Transgender' Character: Florida Family Association (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/21/star-wars-video-game-darth-rupaula_n_1369849.html?ref=gay-voices)

Perhaps not surprisingly, a number of rightwing groups have spoken out against "Star Wars: The Old Republic," a video game which allows players to engage in same-sex relationships.

The game has already sparked the ire of the American Decency Association, which slammed the game's creator BioWare for pandering to “homosexual extremists," Right Wing Watch notes.

Now, the Florida Family Association has gone even further, suggesting that the creators could create "Darth VaPaula, a (mock) transgender version of Darth Vader -- RuPaul, for kids to choose as their action player."

"There were no LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) characters in any of the 'Star Wars' movies," officials note. "So if BioWare, the maker of 'Star Wars' video games, adds LGBT characters for kids to select as their action figure it could be something like Darth RuPaula, a combination of Darth Vader, one of the most popular 'Star Wars' characters, and RuPaul, the renown transgender cross dresser."

Interestingly, the group seems to ignore the fact that RuPaul has always presented himself as a drag queen, as opposed to a transgender individual.

The group concludes by providing an email contact for BioWare's parent company Electronic Arts and Lucas Films "to stop any additions of LGBT characters to 'Star Wars' video games."

The horror! ;l

This is pretty interesting:

Space Invaders: Blast from the past that still inspires (www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-22714047)

If you have ever played a video game, you are likely to have seen Taito's Space Invaders or one of its many derivatives.

It may seem prehistoric nowadays, but the title, which is about to celebrate its 35th birthday, has had a huge influence on gaming and the wider world.

It wasn't the first "schmup" - a term used to refer to old-school 2D-scrolling shooter titles. Missile Radar (1974) and Guided Missile (1977) preceded it.

But it did manage to tap into the zeitgeist in a way that others had not.

This was in large part because, the year before its release, Star Wars and Close Encounters of the Third Kind had stormed the movie box office, stoking the public's appetite for all things alien.

There was an element of luck that Space Invaders had an extraterrestrial theme.

Tomohiro Nishikado, the game's developer, had originally wanted the game to feature battling tanks or planes. But he switched theme after Taito banned the use of human targets.

"Space Invaders wasn't the result of a sudden flash of inspiration. The concept formed gradually," he tells the BBC.

"Brick-breaking games were very successful at the time, and I wanted to create a shooting game in a similar style. Space Invaders was the result of a great deal of trial and error."

Mr Nishikado was 34 when he designed Space Invaders' gameplay, artwork and sounds as a one-man project. He even built a customised computer to run the game.

"Space Invaders, like all microcomputer-based games of the time, was heavily impacted by hardware limitations and slow processing speeds, so development was a struggle," he says.

"The halting movement of the Space Invaders characters was the absolute best I could deliver, but it eventually grew on me."

Space Invaders was initially limited to Japan. It took a few months for mania to ensue, but before long players were standing in line for hours to get a chance to play.

Taito had trouble meeting demand for its arcade machines, and US company Midway spied an opportunity.

It licensed the title and in 1979 launched cabinets featuring the game in the US to great success.

The title also helped jump-start the console industry, which was in the doldrums.

A glut of Pong clones - running versions of the bat-and-ball title - had swamped the market for home video games. Manufacturers had slashed prices in an effort to shift stock to the point where they were making losses. Several quit the sector after the crash.

Atari decided to stick it out and the company's fortunes turned when it released a version of Space Invaders in 1980 - the first official licence of an arcade game for a home console.

Space Invaders had a "revolutionary impact", Taito tells the BBC. "It helped lay the foundation for modern video games."

It remains the company's most popular title three-and-a-half decades on, with a thriving merchandise licensing business in addition to new games.

A rhythm-based spin-off, the Groove Coaster Arcade Edition, is being released this year to mark the anniversary.

The game "adjusts with the times", says Taito.

But despite the many updates, it's the original that is held in the highest esteem.

Guinness World Records named it the top-rated arcade game because of its technical, creative and cultural impact.

And the Museum of Modern Art in New York recently announced plans to acquire the game to join its permanent collection.

"Space Invaders met the criteria we defined for outstanding interaction design," says Kate Carmody, a curatorial assistant at MoMA's Department of Architecture and Design.

"It is a classic that is important to the history of gaming and technology as well as to the history of electronic interaction design."

It is also part of the curriculum at colleges teaching game design.

"Space Invaders and games like it represent the roots of everything we see today in gaming," says Deus Ex designer Warren Spector, who now teaches at the University of Texas at Austin's Gaming Academy.

"It represents the birth of a new art form, one that literally changed the world. Space Invaders is important as an historical artefact, no less than the silent films of the early 20th Century or early printed books."

The game also inspired Invader, a leading street artist.

The Frenchman - who keeps his identity secret - has pasted a wide variety of Space Invaders-themed mosaics as part of his "attacks" on cities around Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas.

Targets have included historic buildings in Paris, the Hollywood sign in California and, most recently, walls in east London.

"The characters, which were created at the beginning of the digital technologies, are very low-tech and made with big pixels, which is perfect to be made with real tiles and mosaics like I do," he tells the BBC.

"I guess childhood is a big influence on the future work of many artists.

"Space Invaders represents to me a symbol of the beginning of the digital world in which we are living now."

I have happy memories of playing Space Invaders on various 8bit machines in the 80s. :)
