Just spent some time on YouTube falling back in love with Nicole Atkins. The only thing keeping me from ranking her among my absolute top artists is the lack of sample size - I can't wait for the new album (apparently due out early 2011).

All the new stuff sounds awesome; loving this song in particular...

And for the uninitiated (or just for the fun of it) here is the performance that won me over...

She's fantastic. I actually felt my jaw drop and caught myself saying "wowwww," a couple times while seeing her live. Her voice is incredibly powerful, and her songwriting skills are good and seem to be constantly improving. I can't wait to hear the next album! The four songs she did at Daytrotter were great!

I wish that more people heard Neptune City. It's a brilliant album. I don't think she'll have any problem developing a large, devoted fanbase if she gets enough exposure. Fiona Apple fans should definitely take notice. Not that they sound alike, but they're similar in the sense that you know you're witnessing a real, raw talent developing. The first time I heard Nicole Atkins, I felt excited, like it had been years since somebody with so much potential came along.

^^Thanks for the heads up on the Daytrotter sessions, I'm downloading right now.

I honestly picked up Neptune City on a whim. The cover art was interesting, and it was a staff rec at Barnes and Nobles. By the first three songs, I knew I'd stumbled upon something amazing. Her voice is unlike any of her contemporaries, full of passion, power, and emotion. On top of that, she has the songwriting abilities to cater to her vocal style and range. So anxious for a second album and the chance to finally see her live.

Saw her in Brooklyn the other day; so good (although the 3 openers that delay her until 12:45 AM? less good). Again, the new stuff sounds amazing. Only played 2 old ones (The Way It Is and Maybe Tonight of course), which was a little odd, but her voice is awesome in person, and the band is very tight.

Anyway, her website was finally updated this week - album will be out in January and you can download Vultures right now! http://www.nicoleatkins.com

oh wow where you at the glasslands show? I tried to make it but got caught up at work! glad to hear it was good.

Yeah I went to Glasslands; I could have used some air conditioning and/or fewer than 3 opening acts, but her voice really was worth it in person. (And mmmm Pies 'n Thighs pre-show fried chicken was the highlight of the evening).

Vultures is fantastic. I've missed that voice! Love how atmospheric the recording is.

BTW, I can't find any info on the Vultures single; it's supposed to come with a b-side cover of Vitamin C, which I know she's done live a bit. Is the single going to be on sale anywhere? I can't find it on any shops or anything, and the articles I've read are pretty vague about the release date.

Clips of the album are available on iTunes, along with the option to pre-order it.

The album sounds just as lush as Neptune City, but definitely a lot darker. I read a press release about the album which explains Nicole split from a long term boyfriend, her band, and her label all since the last album. So obviously, the songs reflect it. However, she stressed that it wasn't a break-up record, more of a reflection and in some cases apologetic.

Whatever the case, the clips have me extremely pumped to hear the rest. Her voice soars on everything she does, and this seems like no exception.

Thanks for posting that video of Vultures. It's my first time to hear a Nicole Atkins song and I'm impressed with the song and her voice. And that bearded man in her video is all kinds of cuteness!

Quoting all of this for truth. Beard included. You should definitely check out more - The Way Things Are is a great starting point, but it sounds like this next album will be a real step up even from the debut.

Vultures is amazing. I sometimes pass Nicole on the street ( she must live in my hood or something) and it is so hard to bite my tongue and not be all " OMG you're amazing!!!!"

I really hope this album is the one to take her where she deserves to be.

Uggggh Mondo Amore was just pushed back to February 8. I was just going on last night to my friend about how it would be out in two weeks, and now I have to add a couple more to that :( Brutal. If Adele wasn't still coming out in two weeks to tide me over, I'd be pissed!

Bought my tickets to the NY show last week, and now they're announcing that there will be a string section playing with the band that night - could be epic! Anyone else seeing this tour?

Has anyone heard the record yet? I thought we'd all be discussing it by now. I was going to go to the Philly show, but now with news of the string section, I'm very tempted to do NYC instead.

I've been listening to the album a lot. I think it's stunning! Especially Hotel Plaster, Heavy Boots and The Tower. I like the psychedelic, rock edge a lot of it has, but still with a bit of soul (especially Cry Cry Cry, which I think sounds like the Jackson Five). :)

I'm waiting til Tuesday :) This is definitely a "wait for full quality" album for me!

On first listen, I'm a bit underwhelmed. Her voice is still great, but this classic rock sound isn't doing it for me the way that the cinematic vibe of the first one did.

Jake

Now that I've had time to sit with it a little, I can definitely say it's a strong follow-up. There are differences that set it apart from its predecessor while still maintaining the sonic space she created with Neptune City. I agree^, the cinematic quality of her debut is less so on this album. But I think songs like Vultures, Hotel Plaster, This is For Love, and The Tower all maintain that. The catchiness of Cry Cry Cry and My Baby Don't Lie is also a new but welcomed addition to her sound.

I think these songs will be great live! You Come To Me stands out as one she'll rock out with in a live setting.

I've been listening to the album since Tuesday night and I'm totally digging it. Definitely going to be near the top of my albums of the year. It's always harder for me to judge an album that I've heard in pieces, and this one's definitely been a slow trickle over the last year, with the Daytrotter Sessions, the Vultures single, and some YouTube clips. So really there were only 4 "new" songs to be had for me, but I'm thrilled that they're almost as strong as the more promotional material she's been pushing alll year.

The NYC show last night was phenomenal. She played:

All of Mondo Amore (no O Canada! though)
Maybe Tonight
Brooklyn's On Fire
The Way It Is
Party's Over
Neptune City
Monterey Honey
Vitamin C (Can cover)
See And Don't See (Marie Queenie Lyons cover)
Plus either an intro or a cover (not sure) leading into The Tower, with lyrics and music both fucked up at some point

The band sounded fantastic and the strings/background vocals/guests were welcome additions for the most part. Hotel Plaster is the only song that I really don't think benefitted from its arrangement. Neptune City's arrangement, on the other hand, was fantastic. And as always, The Tower - which I didn't love at the Daytrotter Sessions - is completely epic in the live setting.

Definitely can't wait til she swings back up here for some more touring!

Going to see her again tonight in Hoboken; can't wait - she's sounded so good this tour. Hoping it'll be a little different vibe than the Bowery show, since Maxwell's is a little smaller. Anyone else going?

Saw her in Philly last night and she closed with a lovely solo acoustic cover of Crying by Roy Orbinson.

I've listened to the new album several times, and I don't know if it's just me, but it kind of leaves me cold. I'm not sure why. I LOVED all of Neptune City and the Bleeding Diamonds EP, but I find myself completely forgetting about and overlooking these new tracks.

I think it's a decent album, but it doesn't have that sparkling orchestral pop vibe that her other stuff had.

^I'm liking the new track, it sounds a bit Lana Del Rey-ish in its tone and the vocals are great as always.

I saw Nicole open for the Eels a couple weeks ago, and she closed with a tremendous performance of Neptune City. This isn't from the show I saw, but it's of similar quality:

Anyone have thoughts on Slow Phaser? It had some moments that I really enjoyed but Neptune City still reigns supreme for me. Girl You Looking Amazing is a really fun single.

Jake
02-08-2014, 05:32 PM
I'm still navigating it. I do enjoy that it has a sound similar to Neptune City, but it doesn't have that spark that made Neptune City so brilliant. It may be because she doesn't use as much power in her voice this time around? There's nothing like "The Way It Is" where she belts the shit out of it. Still, I like quite a few and I'll give it a few more spins.

I've been holding off on commenting in hopes it would grow on me, but I'm shocked at how little the album does for me. I kind of dig Gasoline Bride and The Worst Hangover, but nothing on Slow Phaser has that epic quality like The Way It Is, Neptune City, Hotel Plaster, Heavy Boots, The Tower, etc. After two such perfect albums, I'm totally bummed at how little I'm connecting to this one.

I think some of her absolute best songs are on Mondo Amore, along with maybe just a couple clunkers, but Neptune City is one of the most consistent, cohesive and wonderful albums I own, and a great starting point if you plan to investigate further :)

Pledgemusic campaign went live today for LP4! http://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/nicole-atkins-new-album

Coincidentally, I also saw her play tonight for the first time since she left NJ for Nashville; it was an acoustic gig at the Rubin Museum (just her and piano accompaniment) so it's hard to tell how the new tunes will sound in the studio, but in general they sounded great. And the classics were wonderful in the somewhat different environment (Neptune City, Maybe Tonight, Love Surreal, Hotel Plaster all sounded amazing). Full setlist:

Neptune City
Maybe Tonight
War Is Hell
Love Surreal
Who Killed The Moonlight
A Little Crazy (new)
Colors (new)
Listen Up (new)
Hotel Plaster
Cool People
The Worst Hangover
My Baby Don't Lie
I Love Living Here Even When I Don't (new)
Above As Below
In Dreams (Roy Orbison cover)
I also have a couple low quality vids that I'll have up for a couple days if anyone cares to hear.

War Is Hell (https://www.dropbox.com/s/09asxnjyv2a5fpj/2016-08-05%2019.16.31.mov?dl=0)
Love Surreal (https://www.dropbox.com/s/wvppyg7n79aqibk/2016-08-05%2019.21.58.mov?dl=0)
Hotel Plaster (https://www.dropbox.com/s/xmx4vh7ly41btpt/2016-08-05%2019.46.09.mov?dl=0)

ETA: I can't believe I didn't give this thread a boost when she did a performance of War Torn on Letterman last year... amazing.
