Can someone suggest any good french music? I'm really into Camille, Emilie Simon, Pauline Croze, Olivia Ruiz, Claire Diterzi, Malajube and Coeur de Pirate... but I'm always looking for more!

By the way, if anyone hasn't heard the new Emilie Simon album "The Big Machine" - you are in for a treat! Especially those who love Kate Bush. Just listen to the "Rainbow" and you'll know what I mean

Ariane Moffatt would be a good one to add to the above list:

Charlotte etc. is also wonderful, but pretty much unknown:

Les Hurleurs are another fairly unknown band (at least outside of France) that I really enjoy:

Marie-Jo Thério is apparently working on a new english album, but she always takes like forever for a new release, such a shame. I've seen her live many many times since 10 years and she always blows my mind out. She really reminds me of Tori circa 1994-1996 in terms of live energy and personnality. Her skills are also amazing. This is my favourite of her songs:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fI0syF1_IHA
I also really liked her dirty garage rock outing for the film Full Blast in 1999.

In a more pop (and gay) domain, I really love Mylène Farmer:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Em8lMID8PFw&feature=fvsr

a more folk alternative artist, Catherine Durand, really moves me with this amazing song:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=07v3Es34rNQ

also Mara Tremblay (although my favourite song of hers, Le teint de Linda, is not on youtube...):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhx7Chj55vw

aaand, Sonia Bertrand (a friend of mine hehe):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rD8LzzBxg_Q

I forgot to add Yelle. Love to dance to this song:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FsrN3qxX2Yw

I also love this song by Marie Mai although I don't like her at all generally. It's a really good pop rock song.

Emily Loizeau - Her last album Pays Sauvage made my top 25 albums of the year in 2009 and it probably should have been listed higher on my list.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SiOMjzNUPvs

La Patere Rose - La Patere Rose is a quirky indie pop band from Quebec.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zWx4bjwp8-Y

2010 has not been as good of a year for French music as 2009 and 2008 were, with releases from Coeur De Pirate, Olivia Ruiz, Emily Loizeau, La Patere Rose, Claire Diterzi etc., but there have been a few recent releases that I have listened to this year.

Jeanne Cherhal - Jeanne Cherhal's latest album Charade is a contender for my top ten favorite albums of 2010.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djkEN07rfYA

Emmanuelle Seigner - I did not have particularly high hopes for the latest Emmanuelle Seigner album, but surprisingly her song "Qui êtes-vous?" that she sings with Roman Polanski is among my most listened to songs of the year. I still listen to a few more songs from that album fairly regularly.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IN2on7CIk7Q

Plastiscines - Plastiscines are a young all female White Stripesesque garage rock band that I have found myself listening to regularly this year. Unfortunately they sing most of their songs in English.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMy7DRLlDaE

Caravan Palace - Caravan Palace is an electro swing band.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j95HbhTl60k

If you are interested in French music, especially from French female artists, you should check out the Filles Sourires blog. I usually visit the blog once or twice a week and I get a lot of ideas of what French music to listen to from that blog.

^lyrics and translation

Paris by night regagne les cars

(Translation; [my French sucks by the way, and this song is full of language jokes, so help is appreciated =)]
I am dauphin of the Place Dauphine
and Place Blanche is looking pale
The trucks are loaded full with milk
The street swipers with brooms
It's 5 'o clock, Paris awakens

The transvestites are going to shave
The stripteasers will get dressed
The partiers are all crushed
And the lovers are all tired
It's 5 'o clock, Paris awakens

The coffee is in the cups,
The cafés clean up their mirrors [Spikey: it's where they write menus on]
And on the boulevard Montparnasse
The station is an empty carcass
It's 5 'o clock, Paris awakens

In the suburb the commuters are at the station
In La Villette they're cutting bacon
'Paris by night' regain their cars
The bakers bake baquettes
It's 5 'o clock, Paris awakens

The Eiffeltower has cold feet
The Arc de Triomphe reanimates
The Obelisk is nice erect
Between the night and day
It's 5 'o clock, Paris awakens

The newspapers are all pressed
The working class are all depressed
People rise battered and tortured
For me, it's the time I go to bed

It's 5 'o clock, Paris reviving
It's 5 'o clock, not feeling sleepy yet)

glad to hear you enjoyed it. I have followed her for a long time, but she kinda lost me with this project. Another album with songs from Gainsbourg...and with so little difference...at least Arabesque did something a little different and exciting, but this...the feeling started with the live album Au Palace...for now I'll just keep with the nice things she has done in the recent past
