There is so much going on in this hearing with Arron Banks and his crony, Andy Wigmore, today. Live blog here, and obviously Carole Cadwalladr is tweeting from the room, but I'll wait until it's all done before I try and put my thoughts in order.

What frustrates me is in the US you've got the Special Prosecutor indicting dudes left, right and centre, and here we're just kinda inviting these crooks for tea and biscuits, with some mild probing for good measure.

In related news Carole Cadwalladr has been shortlisted for Private Eye's Paul Foot award for investigative and campaigning journalism.

Lots of other worthy names there too!
Maybe for once, someone will call me "Sir" without adding, "You're making a scene."

She's been amazing, I hope she does win.

Yesterday's hearing was bizarre. I don't even know what the fuck those two morons were playing at. Did they think that veering between jokey bantz and raging at the impudence of their inquisitors was... a strategy?

Pretty obvious that the committee is pissed off and will do what they can to compel them to return for further testimony. And Christopher Wylie is saying that he reported Banks and Leave.EU to the National Crime Agency (UK's organized crime specialists) months ago after seeing these e-mails Oakshott was sitting on (Christ, where to begin with her...).

Farage is still a "person of interest" to the FBI, right?

She missed out on The Eye's Paul Foot award but has just bagged The Orwell Prize.

News quietly published during the England game last night:

BBC News: Vote Leave broke electoral law, Electoral Commission expected to say

Crucially, the draft report is said to claim there was coordination between Vote Leave and a smaller campaign, BeLeave, which received a donation of more than £600,000 in the closing weeks of the referendum, after advice from the Vote Leave director Dominic Cummings.
That's Dominic Cummings who deleted his Twitter some months ago as questions started to become uncomfortable, who has refused to appear before the DCMS committee (that Banks and Wigmore sat for last month), who is being referred to to privileges committee who may find him in contempt of Parliament.

All the dots connecting: Wendy Siegelman/Medium

In addition to gold deals, the New York Times reported that Povarenkin offered Arron Banks a deal with Russian diamond company Alrosa. Although Banks said he did not pursue the deal, a few weeks after the June 2016 Brexit vote, Banks’ business partner Jim Mellon invested in Alrosa through his company Charlemagne Capital.

The Guardian reported that the 2016 Alrosa deal followed an earlier, 2013 deal, Jim Mellon’s company Charlemagne Capital participated in with Alrosa. New reporting reveals that Charlemagne was part of a consortium of companies organized in 2013 by the Russian Direct Investment Fund run by Kirill Dmitriev.

    __

Arron Banks and Jim Mellon have been business partners for a decade since they bought Manx Financial Group together, where Mellon is the chairman and, as of June 2018, Banks is the largest shareholder — owning 29% of the shares.

Manx Financial owns several subsidiaries including Conister Bank based in the Isle of Man, where Arron Banks is also the majority shareholder.

Mellon reportedly introduced Arron Banks to Nigel Farage and donated between £50,000 to £100,000 to support Brexit. However, as a resident of the Isle of Man which is not part of the UK, Mellon was not eligible to vote for the Brexit referendum. Arron Banks was the largest Brexit funder, and reportedly gave £12 million in cash, loans and services to pro-Brexit causes.

Not 100% yet, but looking likely that Cambridge Analytica was one of the pies Maria Butina had her fingers in, and was almost certainly fostering links with the Mercers: Wendy Siegelman again on Medium.

Michigan GOP operative Saul Anuzis said in a Washington Post article that he had met Maria Butina a handful of times. Anuzis has served on the NRA Board’s Public Affairs committee since 2012, a group Butina would have been likely to interact with.

Anuzis has some significant connections to Cambridge Analytica. In 2014 he set up a PAC funded by Robert Mercer, the largest funder of Cambridge Analytica. In 2015 while Anuzis was working on the Cruz campaign, his son Matas started working at Cambridge Analytica as a project manager on the Cruz campaign. In 2016 Cambridge Analytica worked on the “Trigger the vote” campaign for the NRA. And Saul’s son Matas continued to work at Cambridge Analytica until they closed in April 2018.
On October 27, 2017 Senator Feinstein, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee sent a letter to Cambridge Analytica related to the firing of James Comey, improper influence in law enforcement investigations and Russian interference in the 2016 elections. Senator Feinstein requested information on communications Cambridge Analytica had with various people, including Maria Butina, Alexander Torshin, and Paul Erickson. Rick Clay and Johnny Yenason, also cited in the letter, had been involved with trying to coordinate a meeting for Alexander Torshin with candidate Trump.
