    Album Rank 2020

It is a new decade! What is your Tori album rank and your favourite personal stand out song(s) from each album (like a few songs you would play to a friend from each album to give them a taste of why you like the album)?

The big change for me is Scarlet moving up to number 3. It used to be after Pink and Venus and even Native Invader - like number 6 in my album list. But now I just adore it. And I am being harsher to TBK, ADP and AATS as albums as a whole. I have put the albums into tiers as they sometimes switch places and I do love many of them equally...

    Tier 1 - Amazing!
Little Earthquakes - Little Earthquakes & Precious Things & Mother & Winter
From the Choirgirl Hotel - Hotel & iiiee & Northern Lad & Liquid Diamonds & Jackie's Strength
    Scarlet's Walk - Crazy & I Can't See New York & Fairytale & Sweet Sangria & Virginia & Strange
Under the Pink - Past the Mission & Bells for Her & Pretty Good Year & Yes Anastasia
Boys for Pele - Horses & Caught a Lite Sneeze & Putting the Damage On & Hey Jupiter
Native Invader - Reindeer King & Bang & Bats & Benjamin & Climb & Cloud Riders
To Venus and Back - 1000 Oceans & Lust & Riot Poof & Suede
Unrepentant Geraldines - Selkie & Forest of Glass & Oysters & Dixie & Weatherman & America

Tier 2 - Amazing but not as good as tier 1
Night of Hunters - Shattering Sea & Fearlessness & Carry & Star Whisperer
Strange Little Girls - Real Men & Raining Blood & New Age

    Tier 3 - Quite good
Midwinter Graces - Holly, Ivy and Rose & Our New Year & Winter's Carol

Tier 4 - Lots of potential and lots of guilty pleasures on these - but I don't really love them as albums - seem more like B-sides albums to me. They feel like misses to me. I would recommend the 11 albums in the first 3 tiers to new listeners, but not these 3
American Doll Posse - Drive all Night & Beauty of Speed & Mr Bad Man
Abnormally Attracted to Sin - Flavour & Give & Fast Horse & Ophelia (yes - really)
The Beekeeper - Martha's Foolish Ginger & Garlands
I see myself sort of as a small to medium vineyard. And they usually don't sell as much as the screw-top wine down in Safeway. But I don't make wine for Safeway. God bless Safeway. If I am a winemaker I am not going to make screw-top wine ~ Tori Amos

    Smile

    1. Boys for Pele
    2. Scarlett’s Walk
    3. Under the Pink
    4. From the Choirgirl Hotel
    5. Little Earthquakes
    6. To Venus and Back
    7. Strange Little Girls
    8. Native Invader
    9. The Beekeeper // American Doll Posse (both have some great songs and some bummers but both suffer most production wise and vocally imo)
    10. Unrepentant Geraldines
    11. Night of Hunters
    12. Midwinter Graces
    13. Gold Dust
    14. Abnormally Attracted to Sin (just... bad. It’s got a few songs I like but overall unlistenable to me.)

I’m pleased to see that NI is in the middle-ish! The first 7 are all truly great to me and my taste may change from day to day, but that’s generally where they fall. Nothing really needs said about them. Boys for Pele is a track to track masterpiece. Scarlett’s walk is almost that but Wednesday and Dont Make Me Come to Vegas are not in the great realm (but still ok/good/listenable in the context of the album). Native Invader doesn’t have a song I dislike but it has that tin can production courtesy of Martian Studios. I can only imagine what magnificence this album would be if she got a real band together to play drums, bass, the uilleann pipes in Reindeer King, etc. The percussion is definitely a step up from UG but overall the record still doesn’t sound as organic and rich as it could. Beekeeper and ADP are same level for me but kind of polar opposites tonally so they fit the same spot imo. Lots of great songs that could be greater (Almost Rosey being a prime fucking example) if they weren’t so god awfully and tastelessly produced. UG has some gems but again sounds so cheap. I fantasize about the title track being an entirely different experience with a choir and real drums and it makes me sad that will never exist because it’s actually a good song that just sounds bad imo. Same with wedding day. The more spare moments are real winners though (weatherman, oysters, invisible boy, forest of glass, selkie). Night of hunters-gold dust are all somewhat enjoyable with a handful of good stuff amongst the 3 but not things I care that much about to listen to regularly. AAtS is just the worst.

Scarlet’s Walk is and will always be my favorite album of hers (and in general). Hasn’t changed for almost 20 years. But recently I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the way Native Invader has remained on top of my list. It’s been my most regularly listened to album of hers for the last year or so. As far as I’m concerned, it’s among her classics.

UTP 2 BFP 3 FTCH 4 LE 5 SW 6 NOH 7 UG 8 NI 9 TVAB 10 SLG 11 MWG 12 ADP 13 TBK 14 AATS 15 GD.....Think the first four albums are the most creative and consistant...of course there are gems to be found on each release......here's hoping album sixteen keeps up the recent high standard...

here's mine. #2-4 are kind of interchangeable depending on the day, but Pele will always be my #1...it was my first Tori album and still holds that magic for me.

and it might be nostalgia but in terms of the actual songs and the ones I would prefer to listen to more often, Beekeeper and ADP still rank higher than the more recent albums for me.
